Presenting to Pieter...The Amsterdam (in progress)

ref the seperate figureheads+wheel - how was it done for the Lugger VML? that 'looks' like they were seperate additions and could be copied for other ships?(but what do I know about all this? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> )

WOW! That looks just plain amazing! I can't wait to try her in the game! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />
Though getting her done before Build 13 is probably not going to work, because Build 13 is to be released this weekend.

What the deuce??? Well a quick web-search shows that, in fact, the amsterdam DID have it's rear-end bejeweled by dudes, erm - mermen. Here's the pic:
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
They have feet, so they can't be <b>mer</b>men, can they?

<!--quoteo(post=172174:date=Nov 17 2006, 11:19 PM:name=Black Bart)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Black Bart @ Nov 17 2006, 11:19 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->
well we are talking about a <b>Dutch</b> ship no? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> {runs for cover before pieter can see this} <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Too late! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

I wonder what exactly the story on those carvings is? Pieter will know <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I expect at least one of them is meant to be Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Maybe both are meant to be Poseidon?

poseidon with a rubber chicken? guess he liked practical jokes. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
oh, the green on the hull looks good, but the real ship does have yellow stripes over it (in case you had forgotten).

Nope, she definitely won't be ready for Build 13. Alot of work still needs to be done. I need to put the yellow trim on as well as the red on the sides of the stern, not to mention all the other stuff that I have already mentioned.

good, so you didn't forget. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

we cant take the wheel of the VML, because it has only the wheel, not the standard. I mean a steering wheel model like ythe model on Kazeites Black Pearl, so wheel+standard attached to it. Would someone who can do that be so kind and make it?

ok well ref the wheel - dont make it too tall. It probably is historicaly correct that they could get massive - but for the game where YOU are the only person actualy sailing the ship(ie you dont have people shouting directions at you on which way to turn etc) - it helps if you can actualy see where your going imho <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hey, nice work there, Doober. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> Looking forward to seeing and sailing the end result. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

Cheers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

All right. I'be added wheel, lion-like figurehead shape, lantern, removed cannons at the stern and placed them in correct postion, and reshaped rudder and stern shape.

Unfortunately, some of those changes kinda screwed already existing textures. I've tried to fix them as best as I could, but... I'm sorry, <b>Doober</b>, for wasting some of your efforts <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

The model, textures and template for textures can be found on the FTP, in the <i>Kazeite/Amsterdam</i> subdirectory

Is it a seperate model of a wheel?

Kazeite, could you make a seperate steering wheel (attached to its standard) so you can easily add a steering wheel on a ship with locators (for people who can `t model but want to make a steering wheel on their ships)

The ship is now 99% completed thanks to Kazeite's modifications. All the skinning is now done unless Pieter would like the deck reworked. I did notice that the real Amsterdam seems to have a grey deck and red trim on interior walls and cannons. This can be done without too much difficulty, but it will take some additional time. If Kazeite is not to busy and it would not be too much trouble, a few small items need to be remapped. The boards where the rigging attach, the cannon portholes, and a few more spots on the top of the hull walls. Once those are done, the ship is ready to be sailed. Any other skinners are more than welcome to improve on the skin as I will readily admit that I am a novice. Here are pictures of the stern and the bow.

Thanks once again to Kazeite for all his help! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

The new files are being uploaded to the ftp folder Doober

very nice work fellows <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> - i see you even managed to get the proper carvings on each side of the stern, excellent work.

Well, guess Kazeite beat me to it. **grins** Lookin' REAL good.

Cap'n Drow

Looks great! I love how you handled the stern galleries/windows...is there any way you can add those to the skin for Kazeite's new and improved 74 model?

..., as well as a steering wheel as TT mentioned in an AoP thread.
That way they could be attached to ships using mast locators.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Nice idea. Would it be possible to add a (static) character to it that mans the wheel? No animations etc. so that wheel and steersman could be one simple model? Would IMHO look better than a deserted wheel on a ship in full action.

She looks pretty amazing to me! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

I recall the Amsterdam having a wooden deck, not a gray one.

BTW: Do you think it would be possible to add some woodish texture to the brown and green parts of the hull? On the screenshots it seems to me as if these parts are one colour only and don't really have a texture. I could be mistaken though... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I downloaded the Adobe version, and there you CAN see the wood texture, but if you look at it with gm view, it is harder to see, because there is no proper light.

PS: COULD SOMEONE PLEASE make a seperate steeringwheel model, (i know i have been asking for it too much times that it becomes annoying) but i would really appreciate it. And i think more people would.

is the top of the ship based on a corvette? it looks like it. the stern looks amazing! i don't like the yellow on the bow though, it looks a bit to bright. also, maybe a little more texture should be added to the hull. it looks to dull in comparison with the deck. just a little weathering. yet again, the hull might look a bit dull because there are no lighting effects. it should look better in-game.

Those sections are wood textured. you can download them and look at them closer if you like. Like Thomas said, it doesn't show up so great on a screen shot of GMViewer. I haven't put it in-game yet, so if I get it in there, and you still can see it real well, I will see what I can do to fix it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

The photos I had of the Amsterdam, showed that the exterior hull was painted brown, hence I didn't make it as "wood textured" as the deck. If this is incorrect, please let me know and I can work on that.
