Problem with Model in Maya

Ahoy Mates,
I build a ship in 3DS and there it looks good and when I import it to Maya there are "black" polys! What's going wrong?

To me, that looks like the "smoothing groups" got messed up.
But my limited experience in 3D modeling is at least 10 years old, so don't take my word for it....

You've built a ship? What sort? Could we see some more screenshots? (You might want to use the PrintScreen key instead of taking a photo. )

It's not my first ship. My first was the Wappen von Hamburg. I'm yohoho but I forgot my password. The normal box was checked in 3ds.

I build an typical English ship from the 1660 period. It is not a real.

Were walkfiles ever completed for this model? Were these models ever put into B14? I would be glad to assist with AOP walkfiles. I have made several successfully.
