Questions not covered by FAQs

Riddling Lynx

I have a few questions pertaining to the build version of POTC. I'm currently playing b13 final before moving onto b14a. I did read the build FAQ & all of the the FAQs for new members, so I'll only be asking questions not covered by those.

<ol type='1'><li>How many officers/passengers can one safely keep?</li><li>Are there any abilities/perks &/or skills that do not function for NPC officers? (That is, are only effective for the PC)?</li><li>I read a tip on these forums that suggests giving every NPC officer the shared experience perk so that they will share their abilities with everyone. Is this true? I thought it was only effective for the PC to have, in sharing XP with the NPCs.</li><li>What skills should be cultivated for NPC captains manning other ships in the PC's fleet? I suspect leadership, but am not sure if it's taken into account for NPCs (per question #2).</li><li>Is it necessary to place gunpowder & bullets in the weapons locker, for the crew to use guns? Or will that be automatically supplied by the gunpowder stores on board?</li><li>Is there an upper limit to the number of savegames one has? If so, what is it?</li><li>Is build 14 alpha 9.5 with patch 2 stable enough to skip playing build 13 final?</li></ol>

I would really appreciate any solid answers to any of these. And of course, if they've been answered elsewhere (I did look, but didn't go through every post on these forums), I'd appreciate the link if you have it. TIA.

Until the officer system is rewritten, the whole perks perks used thing will remain to confuse me.
As such, I can't really help you with that.

1. I think about 20 or so should work; you should be able to have enough officers for ordinary play

4. Leadership is an important skill for companion captains, since they need it to be able to keep proper command of their ship

5. Not necessary; only putting in blades, guns and possibly armor has any effect

6. MAX_SAVE_GAME_LIMIT is set to 40 at the top of PROGRAM\INTERFACE\save_load.c
There is rumours that the game becomes unstablish if you have too many saves, so if you experience anything like that,
try removing some of the saves you don't need anymore
Of course you can always store older savegames outside your SAVE folder; they don't count for the limit then and you can always put them back

7. It should be pretty stable, but not as stable as Build 13 Final. The additional features are certainly worthwhile though.
What you could do is to install Build 14 Alpha 9.5 Patch 2 and if you get fed up with bugs and such, turn to Build 13 Final.
Of course it's very possible to have multiple installs on the same computer: Install Build 13 Final, then instal the Alpha on a COPY of that folder.

I wondered about that stuff as well. unless you're dead set on being as realistic as possible i'd recommend just turning off the need for gunpowder and such in the Advanced Options. and as for captains of other ships i like them to have good Cannons, Accuracy, Sailing, Leadership and Defense, and maybe some Luck. also any abilities relative to ship combat and sailing are good..though i don't know for a fact how the game skill checks your npc officers those are the skills you would want if it's the same as for the player. as far as versions go there i don't think there's anything to bad to stop you from enjoying the newest version, i was having crash/freeze problems after installing the newest patch but after i re-initialized (pressing F11 in game) i've only had it lockup once..i don't know if this is coincidence or not but it certainly seemed to help.

Thanks Pieter & kalamaru!

What prompted some of these questions comes from consulting with FAQs on the vanilla game -- <a href="http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox/file/914548/29162" target="_blank">this one</a> in particular. Therein is cited many bugs related to savegames, officer quantity, etc.

As for companion captain's skills, I'm leaning toward sailing as being high on the list, since it's so often better to just have them sail away rather than join in the fights. Or am I mistaken in thinking sailing (skill) influences ship speed? Another would be defense, to keep them from getting too banged up while running the Sir Robin maneuver. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I think I might give b14 alpha a try then, on a copy as you suggested. I was just worried about putting a load of time into the game & having it come to a halt from a glitch, so I thought to play b13 first to see if b14 progressed any further once done. The "alpha" moniker scares me a little, I guess.

I've returned to PotC from years ago (I lost my old login info.), during the build 11 days (which was great then, too). I'm glad to see the mod has kept up its momentum & the improvements that have been made since then. I rarely see a modding community this dedicated to a game, but it's great to see. I've only seen b13 so far, but already know you have all done a terrific job, & I heartily thank you for your efforts. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Going through the entire tutorial or hovering the cursor over your stats will tell you what they do,

That is good to hear <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I think I speak from all of us involved in the Build when I say that we are very proud of what we have managed to achieve and wish for the game to be even better <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Some of the stuff in Development Resources is truely awesome <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> but this is very unstable so only available to modders.

Once we can make some of the stuff stable we will release it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Personally I've never seen any bad saves in ordinary play. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

For an alpha, it's really quite playable.
