Realistic Fortifications

This is the new small bastion or triangular redoubt I created. Thanks to Couch Captain Charles for putting it ingame and making it more than just one of my unused models <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Actually, Couch Captain Charles took the picture <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> I only did the bastion since I suck at coding.

P.S. CCC do knows how to recruit "good" officers.

cpt did you stopped your city building?? it looked that good
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

No Captain, I did not stop, I just don´t know how to implement it ingame as a new location, nor I have the time to learn how so bottom line is, I need a team to finish that project, I have other less demanding projects too, like chanching the medieval castles in every island for renaissance Italo-dutch-french forts.

I nedd people for both projects.

What's the problem with the forts? I recently managed (with much trail and error) to add a second fort to StMartin. Would it help you if I make a step to step description of that procedure?

The problem with the forts is that I don´t have the time nor the patience to move all the gun locators, call me lazy or antipathic, but I am not doing it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> the other problem is the lighting, the fort looks plain and is not affected by the night, sunset, etc.

gun locators eh? that gives me an idea, what if one could make a fort one could take command over(aiming and firing)

I toyed with the idea of adding crew to the forts, since if I am not wrong, in the game engine the fort is like a subclass of the ships, it appears in the ship listing, but does not have a rate. I though that with the right locators, the artillerymen and garrison of the fort could appear in the navigation view, climbing to the ramparts and manning the fort guns.

Now, the controllable fort idea is great, far better. If anyone is willing to make the locator work I will take care of the 3D part.

Sounds interesting.

I'm thinking you'd need to create an actual ship(fort) model or more likely several models. Keep the poly count low. The forts would need to become in effect a new ship. Need to change firing arcs for each fort model (this could cause problems). Lock the models into the relative Sea Mode locations and keep them immobile. You could go to other areas of the fort much like going to captains cabin or decks, however these would need to remain at sea and not be a land location.

Sounds possible, although I think it would be a big job to implement. I suppose there would be many other considerations like changing ownership (if your going to command it then it would need to be one of your ships) either temporarily or permanently, Governor's quests to take command, rank requirements, taking control by force. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" /> Maybe a manipulation of the berthing feature could prevent the fort "sailing away" with your fleet. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

Will there be enough demand to command a fort and what situations will call for it? There's one quest situation that I can think of, at Greenford, that could be modified. Can we create further quest/mission situations? Fighting off pirate/nation raids?<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" />

Just some thoughts, anyway.

Cheers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Hehe, I can understand that you are not eager to do that boring numberwork, but why should anyone else be more eager to do it for you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

A way to avoid it: build your new fortifications along the original gunpositions so that you can keep the original locators. Take the original fortmodel, remove the crenellations, "razee" the walls and add gunplatforms and bastions. After all that was done to a lot of medievil fortifications when they became obsolete.
You'll probably wan't to lower the high medievil fortifications. No problem, the height of the gunlocators can be changed easily: just deduct a certain amount from all Y coordinates (1.0 is about 1 meter)

A similar method would also make the creation of a new townlocation a lot easier: take a nice existing townmodel, "tear down" some or all buildings and erect your own models on the original buildingsites. If you keep the doorpositions you won't even have to change a single locator.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> If you email me the .max model of your fort, (not the gm) I will make the cannon locators in-place. But.... Im afraid we need collision detection source too..... (If not, cannonballs just gonna zoom through the walls, as they do now) And THATS a problem, because no model exist with simiral look, that has it, and Inez's tool make an error when she try to create it herself....
We need collision detection, lads.

Hmm..... New, bigger Citys.... Maybe Port Royal herself... Sounds good!

Mate, I made adecision today, I am going to scrap the fort I made for redmond and create a model of fort Charles, the first english fort in Port Royal, it will be realistic and will go perfectly with redmond´s current "role" of Jamaica in the game.

<img src="http://www.jnht.com/forts/images/fort_charles.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/gawingrove/.Pictures/O-models-1/O-M-14.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

So far I have been unable to find the plans for this fort, nor a good historical review about it, looks like there is nothing much about it on the web, so any help will be most welcome.

For converting to/from VRML and other formats. The old, not-so-limited, version. Export from max to 3ds or OBJ/MTL, then use this to convert to WRL if you have a problem doing it in max (or do the reverse if importing is the problem).

You can change the folder an item looks in for textures by assigning
itm.folder = SOME_FOLDER_NAME;
it defaults to "ammo"

The vifs stuff is how the tool to names objects when writing WRL files, and the dummy object is also an artifact of that process (or of the VRML importer). Don't worry about that.

HEEELLLPPPPP, does anyone here live in Jamaica or have a plan of that fort?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I don't live in Jamaica, nor have a plan of the fort.

What I'd suggest is that you contact the History Department at the University of the West Indies:

Jamaica (Mona campus): <a href="http://www.mona.uwi.edu/history/staff/index.htm" target="_blank">http://www.mona.uwi.edu/history/staff/index.htm</a>

or, if that doesn't work, you can try:

Trinidad (St. Augustine campus): <a href="http://www.sta.uwi.edu/fhe/history/contact.htm" target="_blank">http://www.sta.uwi.edu/fhe/history/contact.htm</a>
