Redguard Rampage!

SirChristopherMings

Corrupter of Words
Storm Modder
I owe a great debt of thanks to both Catalina and Nathan for reuniting me with my beloved Redguard Game., thanks to their directions I will once again be cutting a swash across the sands of Stros M'Kai with my trusty saber. When I found my new computer could not play Redguard I began a long sad wait for Sea Dogs II, hoping that the sword fighting features in Redguard would be incorporated into the new game.

For those of you who are not familiar with this game I will insert this caveat, I read many reviews for the game that complained about a number of things within the game that hold an irresistible appeal for me.

One thing I recall the reviews complained about was the combat system and the only reason I can figure this could be is because Redguard's set up is a lot like real fencing which, as anyone who actually does fencing knows, is pretty hard. Attacks that you make in a fencing bout don't always hit, (even if you think they did) your opponent tries to close distance on you when you're running out of room on the strip, even on bouts you win you wind up realizing that you still have a lot to learn.

The game out of the box doesn't make it any easier because it sets you up so that you are playing the game watching Cyrus sword fighting in profile. It is only when you figure out that you can adjust the point of view so that you get a view similar to sword fights in POTC, third person, directly behind your character, will you gain an advantage for dealing with your opponents.

In Redguard you can direct your attacks so that you either thrust, lunge, or initiate a cutting attack consisting of either one, two, or three strokes that you can use to setup as feints and time a hit against an oncoming opponent. In POTC the attacks look really nice, but I have no say in whatever attacks Nathaniel chooses to make.

The other thing that Redguard had that POTC doesn't, is footwork. In POTC I rarely use the short retreat feature because the universal parry, depending on the caliber of blade that my opponent has, keeps me safe and warm. I also avoid backing up because I will usually walk into something and the camera shifts can sometimes confuse me and slow down my reactions. In Redguard the foot work is very good because it helps you to get a feel for better timing your attacks and keeping an awareness of the distance between you and danger.

That being said, one of the things I do with Redguard, having finished the game long ago, is draw my sword and run to locations where there are a lot of Imperial soldiers. When they see me running around with a sword they realize that I am trouble and run over to me to try and put a stop to my shenanigans. I then try to get the soldiers to chase me to where there are more Imperials, this is not really easy to do because if you get to far ahead they tend to run back to their starting spots. When I have good group of them 8 – 16 on average, I then turn and go into a Redguard Rampage taking them all on at once and leaving their bodies strewn about the island. A true Redguard Rampage wipes out every guard on the surface of the island who will fight with you. (Some of them will not fight you no matter what you do.) If you kill everyone and want to do it again, just go into any building and come back out again and they're all back ready for a rematch.

Then it's time for Redguard surfing, but that's another email.....

I love this game. You could make Cyrus do amazing things - and go places you NEVER could go with Nathaniel from PotC... I have often wondered why they never took this game any further as it was a thoroughly satisfying play - the type of game I could and WOULD spend hours working on... The puzzles made ya think, and there were enough acrobatics to keep ya busy, sometimes you'd run across the most interesting objects or places or situations - you could run over the ENTIRE ISLAND GAWD I wish you could do that with PotC...

I love the Redguard Rampage, I will have to try that, sounds like a lot of fun...

For now... Here's a pic of Cyrus doing what he does best - and on Stros M'kai, everybody drinks in the streets, it seems. (LOL!)

I love the Redguard Rampage, I will have to try that, sounds like a lot of fun...

One word of advice, when you are herding a group of Imperials, try not to laugh when they accidently start hitting each other when they try to get you, some of them can get away, and then you have to run back and retrieve them before your Redguard Rampage can get under way.

One thing I noticed is that Cyrus seems to have trouble keeping his footing on the slopes in the mountainous areas of the island, and will often slide until he reaches firmer ground. I have gotten into the habit of finding a long high slope and make Cyrus walk onto it, and then try to surf him all the way down the slope and into the ocean, preferably an area with a lot of sharks in it, all the while singing, "Let's go surfin' now, everybodies learnin' how, come on a safari with me!" This is Redguard Surfing, and I think a further confirmation that I do get my money's worth out of the games I buy.

My hope is that Nathan, or anybody else who has the game and hasn't played it all the way thru, start running into problems with the game and post here to see about getting clues. I am sure that there are walkthroughs out there, and I remember there were a couple of useful cheat codes too, but it would provide me with an excuse to try and go back and play the game all the way thru to see just how much of it I remember. It seemed like I would never finish it at some points, not necessarily a bad thing, and I recall that the computer I had at the time I first played it was sorely taxed to provide the amount of memory the game required.

The only thing in the game that gave me real problems was trying to find items in the game that were buried somewhere. Cyrus probably got a lot of callouses from the number of times I told him to gig in the wrong place.

But the observatory, ooooooh!

Ah and how about when you get turned into that little critter??? "`Yup-pee` num num!" :cheers I used to love running that little guy with the big feet all around town... HAHAHAHA! Too funny! :p:

Probably one of my favorite moments in the game is when you're heading towards the big finale. I really love the little "movie" you get to watch when Cyrus finds a little backbone (with a little help from a sword from Prince Ator) and rallies the Restless League. So stirring!

No back bone for Cyrus?

I don't know, I have a lot of admiration for a guy who can repel down the equivalent of a 5 story building, without a rope, mind you, and walk away unharmed.

Actually, when I think about it, that didn't make a lot of sense because, Cyrus dies when he falls off a three story building, (believe me, I know,) but the cliffs have got to be more than twice as high and still he stays all clean and shiny.

It was fun to make that little guy say things that didn't translate but actually sounded like he was saying something. I played that game too fast, if I hadn't been in such a `dad-blamed` hurry to get turned back, I would probably have a lot more funny stories.

Oh well, time to jump off the city walls and into the bay where the dolphins jump. Ahhhh...

Ah yeah, he is an aerobatic superstar, of that there's no doubt. I was talking about his reluctance to become involved in what was going on - the local politics, &tc. He just wanted to find his sister and go find another war to sign up for.

Dolphins? What about the SHARKS?!!! CHOMP! :p:

Crown, Forebear, those High Rock people all look alike to me.
:p:
You've got to hand it to those Bethesda people, they really take their Tamriel seriously, not many games come with their own system of astology.

No sharks in the bay outside the city, where do you think I goto cool off after a Redguard Rampage?

On more than one occasion i have seen the sharks chase Cyrus out of the water and their fins are breaking the surface of the earth. I guess they're land sharks!

Fred Bob's Nutty thangs ya can do in POTC thread has got me thinking about the nutty things you actually could do in Redguard. I'm sure you have done most or all of these but I feel like putting them down in this thread:

1. bottles and candles were not safe as you could hit them with your sword and they would either break or get cut and go out.

2. you could climb onto tables, or go behind counters, and if you did someone would ask you about just what the heck you thought you were doing.

3. I was able to actually get into the sealed off, "Crown" portion of the city as Cyrus, and not just as the little creature. (easy for him, he could run fast and had those big feet.)

4. It took me forever to figure out how to get the snake charmer to talk to me. (I spent a lot of time hitting the cobra though, often in spite of the man's protests.) it would have been nice to have this little emoticon around when I actually figured it out. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

5. I spent many hours trying to find a way to climb the buildings on the side of town that is away from the port. I figured if I could tightrope across the fish line I would be all set.

6. I like swordfighting in town better than out of it because I usually had a cheerleading section when I did it there. I liked when the contractor would say, "Look out! there's another one coming!" even if there wasn't another one coming.

7. Cyrus' ability to jump was almost as good as an "R" key, except that any rising slope defeated his efforts. (Less so in the Glidos game)
I had given POTC to my nephew and was showing him how to play it and one of the first things he asked was, "Can he jump?" to which I had to give him a disapointed face and tell him, "No." <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" />:

The main reason I liked most of these features was that it showed that whomever thought up this game realised that a person like me would be playing it and then made provisions for those instances when I would say, "I wonder what will happen if I do this?..."

I wish that those people had been working on POTC....

<!--QuoteBegin-SirChristopherMings+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(SirChristopherMings)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I wish that those people had been working on POTC....<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->I know... I know... Actually I got spoiled with Redguard, there just were no other games out there like it and I wasn't interested in the typical "first person shooter" stuff <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> I just DO NOT understand WHY nobody took this game type any further... It was just GREAT!

Yeah, I spent time with Cyrus running around in the "old city" - rooftops and on the ground. Tops of walls, roofs, wherever I could get him to climb.

I really liked the Dwarven ruins... They were so interesting and so tantalizing - once I figured out that I could get nearly EVERYWHERE, I did all sorts of crazy stunts there...

I also climbed all around the hills surrounding the Dwarven ruins. SHORTCUTS up the hill (instead of around!) were certainly welcome! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Swimming in the ocean OUTSIDE of the bay is dangerous - heh... Those sharks WILL CHOMP at ya... Funny to watch Cyrus being eaten, LOL!!!

I was quite intrigued by that airship and wished I could take it sailing around... Drop in on Nagasta... HAHA!

Maaan. I wish I had the time to get into this game again. Heck, I'm still trying to finish my FB quest - and even that has been put on hold right now because of the flurry of activity around my home - the owner wants me to move to a different apartment (same building) and is in and out of here fixing things a terrorizing my poor cats... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Just not enough time in the day, nor enough days in a week... Ya KNOW??? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

I got to a point in Redguard where the game no longer progressed. Have any of you completed the game?

Yes, but took a lot of memory on my old computer.

I'll have to look around to see if I can find either the webpage with the cheats on it, or the printout that I have on it. If I remember right, the progress you make in the game depends mostly upon obtaining the items that you get from various encounters and if you have the item you can move forward in the game. That may not be 100% correct, but I think it is, I just remember that time in the game does not go forward until you have completed all the tasks and gained all the necessary items.

I do remember that it was worth it to get to the end of the game, but like unmodded POTC, the game is over and you have to start a new game if you're like me and just like to fence with Imperials and pirates.

Whar do ye be thinkin' might a man find him a copy o' Redgaurd, Sir Chris? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Sampow,
My old links don't work anymore, but this link, along with a couple of others,

<a href="http://www.cheatheaven.co.uk/`pc-cheats`-2/redguard.htm" target="_blank">http://www.cheatheaven.co.uk/`pc-cheat...-2/redguard.htm</a>

has the items list and how to add them, including that blasted buried thing that I nearly sank the island digging holes trying to locate.
I didn't look for any walkthrus, but I'm sure there's one out there somewhere. Again, if you can identify whereabouts you are or were stuck, I may be able to figure out what you need to progress. Give me an excuse to replay this game, please, I do remember it being quite the undertaking.

Fred Bob, Nathan posted how he had obtained a copy of the game thru Retrosoftware.com.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Actually, I have to plug retrosoftware.com here too; they had Redguard a couple months ago (which is good enough! It's what, `six-seven` years since it came out?), for IIRC 5? 10? USD. Then, it arrives complete with the manual, map, _and_ the hint book. Very nice.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Let me know if this method doesn't yield up the game, I'm sure I can get you a copy somehow...
<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Yes, I completed the game, Sampow. Quite a few times. Several spots in the game are very tough - it's not the battles that are difficult, it's the puzzles and how to solve them.

Remember the beetle apparatus, Sir Christopher? The thing you had to jump on and twist and get to stand up and all sorts of other gyrations?

You really had to think. This game was so clever...

This looks like a good site for tips:

<a href="http://www.`uhs-hints`.com/uhsweb/redguard.php" target="_blank">http://www.`uhs-hints`.com/uhsweb/redguard.php</a>

Thanks for all those responses. I can't actually remember where I was stuck since it was probably 10 years ago or something like that (sure seems that long ago anyway). <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

I hate to shelve a game incomplete, so I'll definitely have to whack it back on my PC and try again (hopefully I can pull it off without checking walkthroughs and such, it's so much more satisfying that way) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

That site I mentioned above gives you small hints at a time - rather than a huge walkthrough that explains everything all at once - so that might be better if you happen to get stuck - it will *gently* nudge you in the right direction, rather than saying, here give me that sword, I'll do it!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Keep us informed, would love to hear of your progress - I haven't the time, or I'd fire it up again myself. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I hear that, I will often play a game thru to the end, that I am not necessarily enjoying, just to get to the end. I gave up on Sea Dogs because I found it to be very frustrating, but thanks to Hosehead the Bloody and ScrugDog I finally got my money's worth out of it.

Nathan posted instructions for Glidos, (thanks again to Lady Cat as well!) in another thread that enabled me to play Redguard on my current computer, and I will post them here in case you need them:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><b>Originally posted by Nathan Kell

Heh. Let me plug for Glidos here.
One of the best ways to spend a tenner.
On my XP box, with a GF4 ti200, (and, in conjunction with VDMSound and SAPUCDEx for CD Audio), it works like a charm.
At 1600x1200 no less!

What you need to do is:
Install VDMSound
Install Redguard for 3DFx.
Install GLIDOS.
Run the DOS (not Windows) soundset for Redguard _with_ VDMS
Make sure SAPUCDEx is set to run with VDMS
Edit GLIDOS's config to point to correct Redguard folder
Start Redguard via GLIDOS (which will automatically start VDMSound).
Click Ignore on the warning box
Play!
</b><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

The Glidos has been working fine for me and has been worth the ten bucks in my book.

I hear you, Lady Cat, hope things start going the way you want them to. Remember, there's always time for a Redguard Rampage. (What I wouldn't give to be able to load the game on my computer at work!)

I can see it now, Sir Christopher at work, at his desk, playing Redguard and giggling and taunting the Imperial guards... And terrorizing the people he works with... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Sadly, that is a very accurate picture you've drawn....

But I do it with a becoming grace. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Obviously, or you would not have won the Lady Mings! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />
