The modifier button is the keyboard shift key, Baku. You <shift>+mouse buttons give you additional maneuvers. There is a Feint and a Dodge on middle and right mouse buttons when shift is held. <shift>+ left mouse gives you the "circular" attack is it is called. Basically its a sweep attack that can hit all enemies in a 180 degree arc in front of you.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the welcome, you heap of scurvy sea-dogs!

Even though I agree with a lot of WR's points, I don't want it to seem like I hate this game by any means. I love the ship-to-ship naval combat side of it (though, truth be told, Akella's changed the recipe very little since the first Sea Dogs, though accuracy seems to be more important now) and I 'think' I like the melee combat a bit better than Age of Pirates 1, though I see some major issues with the gunplay and I'm sure I'm not the only one who felt more than a bit let down by the different melee types boiling down to little more than different swords. I'd have really liked each melee class to allow your pirate to assume a different attack stance so the enemies in the game had some varied attack postures, something like Jedi Knight II did with the weak/medium/strong stances that gave you completely different moves.

Also, am I the only one that thinks the caverns and such are a bit, well, incomplete? Basically they're all empty unless you step into one of those glowy things to summon pirates, and I remember the previous game had pre-spawned areas.

Finally, I wonder what happened to the version of Age of Pirates 2 they showed off a year back. Remember that trailer that showed a whole army of pirates attacking a town and people being cut in half and gushing their innards all over? I'd like to know where that went!

Here it is unless you missed it:

That's a completely different game, mate. Not even related to AoP/CoAS (and PotC and SD before), despite having the same title of "Age of Pirates".
It seems to be a hack-'m-smash-'m kind of game, rather than an RPG. In fact, one screenshot of that game has generated the "salad shooter of doom" remark here on the forum.
That remark is basically used when something is at risk of being <i>really</i> stupid.

Well from what I read it was meant to include rpg elements like character skills and ship combat and such, but it never got a PC release. For a 2006 game, visually it looked pretty good though!

A 2006 game? It's not even released yet. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />
We've got an old thread on that game here: <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=11451" target="_blank">http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=11451</a>

ah, that's Age of pirates: captain blood. seems like something you'd play for a bit of fun maybe, but not to get immersed in it. sometimes, carnage is fun. but it doesn't make a game.

Indeed, that is what was supposed to be a related game, but Akella is no longer handling it. It's been taken over by another company that I can't think of the name of.

Likely it will lose the Age of Pirates moniker and just get named Captain Blood or some such thing.

Looks interesting as an action adventure game, but very arcadish. A lot of the action actually reminds me of Blue & Grey. Looks like the gameplay will at least be relatively similar.

I expect the reason for the hand to hand combat to be harder is to make it more difficult when boarding ships, for example on sailer level you might board a ship with half of what your enemy has and still take the ship without loosing that many men, while the ship to ship battle maybe easy the boarding is made harder to put you off the idea of boarding a ship too quickly and winning the battle. Back in those day's most captains would perhaps have liked to capture the ships rather than sink them but not all ships could be captured and the only thing available would be to sink the ship. A captain wouldn't attempt to board in less he was sure he could win or he knew the chances of winning the battle was almost impossible and he couldn't escape, so he took his chances trying to board. The easy way to make the sea combat a little more harder is edit the ships and make them all stronger, the problem is, its alway's going to be the same amount of crew so you can easily blast the crew with grape/bombs and board if you increase the maximum crew sizes per ship you increase the ships running costs and it starts to move from realistic to stupid, a Sloop with 500 crew is a laugh, yes Black Beard had a ship the Queen Ann's Revenge which could carry a large amount of crew and had as many as 40 guns but it wasn't a Sloop, perhaps a Schooner, Packet Brig or other similar ship. Anyway pirates had there own way's of improving there chances of slowing a ship down via a shot type that would ignight the sails etc and for obvious reasons having something like that in this or any pirate rpg would make it too easy so to make it close to realistic as possible is not alway's the best way to go about things, my tip is don't try to board the ships so quickly, more so when at such a low rank and have plenty of potions ready just in case, and enough bullets to see of a few troops, i alway's have 20 bullets and 10 potions, any officer's with me have 40 bullets and as much potions as they can carry.
