why doesn't anyone realise that i'm not talking about street merchants? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> i mean townsfolk which you can buy items from!

A merchant is a merchant is a merchant. You aren't buying items from townsfolk, you are buying them from itinerant merchants. Still part of the merchants guild.

It was not intended that you should survive the experience, and if you somehow did, no one would trade with you. Serves you right for killing a merchant!

Hook

well, i normally use them for selling stuff anyway. i often spend months selling 5 million worth of treasure from a single treasure chest. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> seriously: more than 700 diamonds of something like 5000 each! not to mention the rest of the stuff!

Ok, I know this topic is kind of old, but I am having a problem with my Reputation- I am "Horror of the High Seas", but I have done nothing bad! The only quests I have done are the ones from the Gov on Redmond and the Deliver Chest from Shipwright in Oxbay (Start of the "Black Pearl" quest). The only ships I have attacked are pirate ships already engaged in combat. I think that is why I have gone from Hostile to Neutral with the French- I have saved several of their ships from pirates. The only thing I have done that is "bad" is to loot houses, but when I asked a friend that is experienced with the game, he said that is not the reason. However, thinking about it and reading some of the other things that lower Rep, I suspect that IS why.

So, assuming that is the reason and I stop doing it, will that make a difference? Interesting about being able to pick up survivors though. I like that idea. And, what is this about rescuing damsels in the jungle? Please, do explain!

NOTE: I do NOT have any Builds installed, only a few player modifications to the character.init file. Those are as follows: Changed main character to Danielle Greene (but kept ch.ID as Blaze), changed her name to Mary Read, increased starting money to 9000, upped free ability and skill points and gave myself a better sword, pistol and spyglass. (Please don't tell me to install one of the Builds, I am unable to do that right now- long story. That is why I have had to do all the mods myself.)

Thanks!

Well, my first question about your gameversion is answered then... Have you borrowed any money from one of the loansharks and then (accidentally) forgot to give it back?

Would be interesting to know what the long story about you and the build is, as I don't think you've mentioned it here - maybe we can help, if it's a bug or something... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Thanks for your quick reply Rico. I never use the LoanSharks, so that is not it. If it is not because I loot houses, perhaps it is a bug? Otherwise, the only other thing I have noticed is that I have trouble telling friend from foe during boarding actions. This has resulted in me sometimes killing my own crew. However, I always make sure their morale is <i>Heroic</i>, so that should not be the problem.

Also, I have not noticed any change in the way NPCs deal with me; the merchants still trade with me at a reasonable price, officers still want to be part of my crew, other NPCs talk to me and very few ships run from me at sea. I am really stumped here; no one seems to have an answer.

The reason I am unable to download the Build has nothing to do with the Builds. My on-line computer's disk-writer is not working, so I have no way of copying it from my on-line computer to my main computer. You see, rather than spending hundreds of dollars on security programs, I just bought a cheap computer and use it. I install only what I need to get on-line and never keep anything important on it. That way, if I do get a virus, trojan, worm, etc; I just do a System Restore and start over- no big deal. (I told you it was a long story! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> )

that's a stock game bug. for no apparant reason, your reputation would drop over time. it has been fixed in the build though, although it does still sometimes show up. but that rarely happens.

I was afraid it was a <i>bug</i>. But I am glad it is NOT becuase I have been looting houses; it is a great way to get extra cash in the beginning.

One thing I have noticed is: people are very easily intimidated into giving you what you want and the thugs in the jungle leave me alone!

Hi Mary. If you want to increase your reputation you mustn´t loot in houses of citizens. Perform some charity actions as give some alms, rescue girls from bandits in jungles and so on. By the way the game without any Builds is so bad that I think nobody plays it this way here. Anybody plays it with Build 13 or 14 and this is the way it is suppose to be here. Only once I played the PoTC without any Build and it was totaly bad experience for me. For the last time I played game with Build 13 and second update. The third update didn´t work for me. And this Build 13 full with second update is pretty stable and good. So, if I could recommed anything I would discard all the game starting anew with one of the latest Build. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Thanks Rad! Mac told me that looting the houses had nothing to do with it, but after reading some of the things here, I began to wonder. It was the only thing that made sense.

Look Guys, I know the Builds are a great thing with lots of fixes and extras. I fully intend to download one as soon as I can, but right now I am unable to do so. (Please See Reason Stated in Previous Post!) Now if one of you kind souls wants to send me a disc with one of the builds on it; please feel free to do so. Otherwise, please stop telling me to get one of the builds!! Thank You!

for as far as i know, looting houses in the stock game didn't bring down your reputation. but it's worth a shot. i think i just never noticed because i always kept it up with good deeds.
