Request of the PotC Modding community....

The AOP Modding community is very interested in getting a jump start on things. Considering PotC and AOP are almost exactly the same, I was thinking that if the PotC modders might be willing, the AOP modding team might be able to use the PotC build mod as something of a reference work and framework for modifying AOP to similar lofty heights.

Since I've not noticed anyone ask of the PotC community outright just yet, I figured I'd go ahead, jump in and see what you guys had to say. If you are one of the modders who has worked on the build mod or provided materials for it, and you don't mind it being used for AOP in the future(if its possible), the AOP modding team would greatly appreciate your permissions to do so.

Thanks a ton!

I'm all for that; I don't expect much more from Akella for AoP, so it'll be up to the modders, just as it was with PotC. Hope they're all agreeable, matey!

I think that using the Build mod as "suggestion" of what can be done should be no problem at all. If you want to use actual code or resource files, I can't speak for those. The people who wrote the code or made the resources should have the final say on that. Unfortunately many of the original modders are now gone, so they can't actually give their permission.

Personally I wonder if it would be possible to get Build 13 working under the AoP Storm 2.5 engine. I'd rather put AoP stuff into Build 13 than the other way around. Build 13 is a reasonably stable base for future modding (minus some required fixes), but what I hear of AoP suggests that nothing can seriously be attempted until it's thoroughly fixed. It might cost more time and effort to fix AoP than it would be to get PotC to work under the AoP engine. Perhaps it would be possible to actually use AoP code for Build 14. And perhaps Build 14 could be a modpack for AoP AND PotC? Don't you think that PotC + Build 13 + AoP + Additional Mods could make for the most awesome pirate game ever?

But I personally am not going to work on making anything AoP compatible; I have plenty to do with PotC alone. So if anyone wants to work on this, it would have to be somebody else than me.

Feel free to use anything I've ever written. I'll stick to PotC as it is more to my liking, but I wish you much success with your "Save AOP" project <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Thank you Pieter and CouchCaptain, it's very much appreciated. Any other modders who see this and had something in to Build mod, please reply yea or nay.

Your assistance would help the AOP community greatly.

Pieter: I'm not sure just what would be usable from AOP for PotC. But there ARE some features in AOP that the PotC community has been clamoring for a long time. Things like masts that can actually be shot down, with a minor in script tweak, the engine displays the crew on deck without needing a mod. A randomly generated and variable commerce system and a few other things. Can't think of them all off the top of my head.

Thats why I feel that as much as I love both games, the AOP stuff is enough of a jump forward to make modding it, fixing it and playing it VERY worthwhile.

Fine by me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Any modding I've done has usually been on the back of someone elses work anyway and they've be kind to give permission, e.g. SLiB Team. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" /> We're all sailing the same pirate waters so we can all only benefit. POTC Build is still my favourite but I'll get into modding AoP too, that is once I can get the damned thing working properly. As is, I'm experimenting with adding AoP stuff to my POTC Build game.

Cheers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

How is that different from what we have now in PotC?

Here's a screen shot. You don't want to find yourself in this position. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Hook

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" /> By the looks of it that little sloop is also leaking like a sieve. Down to visit Davy Jones very soon, if you don't help her on her way sooner there, Hook. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Crossing her wake for a final rake? Gunnery practice for the crew?

Cheers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Hmmmmm... Interesting, didn't know that had been added. Just started messing about with the Build mod myself, so didn't know what all it did. I do remember that in stock PotC, you couldn't knock masts down, and everyone was complaining about it. Nice to know it got worked out. **grins**

Jack: Thanks for the reply, tis very appreciated.

You can also knock the bow-sprit of by colliding with something unmoving(like a port wall!) - so i think those pirates in Hooks pic need another good shot before the cannoneer wins his wager <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I get very depressed when one of my masts goes down, especialy if its because of friendly fire!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

At Cap'n_Drow - the thing i worry about for AoP is that by all accounts its much more of a mess than PotC ever was, its going to take an awfull lot of effort(if at all possible) to get it anywhere near where modded PotC currently is. If Akella stop trying to fix it(or actualy if they carry on - and include starforce junk each patch) then that still leaves a massive amount of work just to get the game fixed and stable, before modding.

In PotC the guys here have done amazing things:

1. we now also have 16 Islands as in AoP
2. multiple character selections at game start - male+female
3. Many more unique items/ships
4. Very realisitic sailing/sea combat model(including mast loss)
5. New shops(apothacry+tailors)
6. New interface - much more logical and easy to use
7. Ability to build your chars rep and become respectable(land owner+marriage)
8. Expanding officer classes(Doctor/Carpenter etc)

I could go on <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And the thing is the more we look at it, the more potential can be seen - for example developing a full 3D continuous sailing mode(where you can get from island to island in 3D). Expanding shops/services available in town. Expanding items and effects of items. Expanding crew(officer) usefulness, including creating new officer classes.

And all this on what is basicaly a stable game currently. Its great that many guys are going to carry on trying to fix AoP, but.....well i think you'll find people like Pieter, Hook, pirate_kk and others feel PotC offers more possibilities for creating a really great pirate game - AoP seems less finished than PotC was, and thats saying something.

Oh, don't get me wrong. Love the Build mod on PotC(Own all three games since each of them came out). But there is so much stuff still in the directories from PotC in AOP, that I have no doubt at all that its just a rewrite of executable and some DLL's to bring the new engine on-line. Given some time, maybe another (please Triton, let 'em give us a better patch) and a pile of work, I'm sure everything done with PotC would be able to be done with AOP.

I just like the upgraded graphics in various area's as well as the new storm a bit better than PotC's. I also really enjoy some of the additions like the Officer purchase system, so you don't have to go from bar patron to bar patron trying to find out if they are an officer or not. There are a variety of niggling little things that just make me want to help AOP increase and retain its currently slavering fan base. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I do understand your reasoning as well. But thats why my request to be allowed to use Build as an example/framework for AOP modders to kind of work off of.

Thanks,

Cap'n Drow

The Storm 2.5 engine does have a lot of potential (and does have better graphics), so AoP could in time become worthwhile (if there is any more official support forthcoming). IF any future patches finish incomplete areas, and add on (like the rest of the Caribbean) we would have a decent game. I am skeptical though, with Akella's record on product support... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="<_<" border="0" alt="dry.gif" />

we'll i'm not against sharing the build mod but i think (and maby its already said)i can't be converted?

well if it is possible i really like aop interface is it possible to take that over <a href="http://www.dixons.nl/De_online_winkel/ProductDetail/xp/shop/gaming/pc/games/Age+of+Pirates_xcl_+Caribbean+Tales+(PC).SW05732/default.aspx?productmenu=screenshots" target="_blank">http://www.dixons.nl/De_online_winkel/Prod...enu=screenshots</a> look here at the interfaces

Okay, my plans are to basically work some things from build into the mods for AOP. Anything I can get working, I'll use as long as the original modders or the overall PotC modding community says its okay. I won't just convert it over, I'm just looking to borrow concepts. Maybe snippets of code and perhaps some of the new images. Things like the updated textures for items and stuff in stores.

I just want to do everything I can to make sure AOP meets its potential, which is truly huge. Just the darned thing is buggy as hell, and the only real work towards bug fixing we've seen hasn't even come from Akella or Playlogic, but from the AOP community and specifically Cyberops.

Thanks again everyone!

Please if you are a modder, you have stuff in the Build mod and you don't mind us using your stuff for mods for AOP, let us know.

Thanks,

Cap'n Drow

I forgot to tell you that you can use all my work. I haven't actually made many mods myself, but if you want to add a quick-equip key or a bladedamage mod, feel free to use my code. I haven't actually modded much other things into the game. Mostly I've only been doing compiling work.

Thanks, Pieter. And again to everyone else who has agreed to let the AOP community use your work.

I still hope to have more approvals from all of you who mod for PotC to allow the AOP community to benefit from your work here to make the newest Akella game even better.

If you are a modder, who has material, code or other stuff in PotC build, please, leave me a yay or nay to allowing us to use your work.

Its not quests we are interested in, but possibly graphics, ship models, code snippets and other similar things we can convert for use with AOP.

Again, I thank you all.

Cap'n Drow

Thomas & Jack, thanks for the approvals gentlemen. Tis' greatly appreciated to have such thoughtful shipmates.
