The best understanding of why this happened was his lifelong battles with anxiety, depression, and abuse of drugs to combat the effects of his emotional challenges. I don't agree with his decision based on his directed suicide, but I do understand why.
If you ever have watched his performance in the movie, "What Dreams May Come" (1998) it very clear that although he was acting, he did not have to practice the part anywhere near as much as many of his other wonderful roles in television and film.

"Sometimes when you win, you lose."
It continues to be a sad day in the world.
