Ship class names

v_Grimmelshausen

Landlubber
I don´t know whether you had this thought as well, but to me, the ship class names don´t very much match the ships they´re assorted with ( or rather, the kind of ship I associate with them). The pinnace is one of the most extreme examples I´ve come across so far, but there´re others, as well. Now, I´d like to know if and where I might be able to edit those names.

You may change the names in common.ini in RESOURCEINITEXTS folder or maybe in RESOURCEINITEXTSlanguage folder.
Their is a line
; Ships

and further
string = Galeon1,"Galleon"
...
The name in "" is changeble. The rest is better not to touch.

Thanks a bunch <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
No more `three-masted` pinnace anymore. I _might_ get confused when I read the forum afterwards, however.

Will you post here the changes you decide to make, along with your source material, so we can all mull over it?

I can do that by tomorow, but I wonder what source material you´re talking about. If you mean something real historical, then I´m not of much help, I adjusted the names so they are more or less in line with those from Pirates! or Port Royale. I really got shocked when I was told, around Oxbay there was a pinnace flying a pirate´s flag and took out the spyglass, seeing this huge vessel.

The ships´s stats are in the Shipsinit.c file, right? Can they be changed (adjusted is the better word, actually) or is it better not to touch them? The max. crewsizes seem a bit, well, strage, considering the ship´s sizes ( in terms of proportion of the models; the barque, for example, looks a lot bigger than the sloop, yet it has a smaller max. crew, and the big ships have crewsizes that seem incredibly large to me, like way over 400 on a galleon).

@emrep: The file is, in build 11 at least, common.ini, by the way. At least, there´s where those lines appear.

Ah, I found out yesterday, there´s more than one common.ini.
I changed both the one in the english folder and the one right in the text folder, that worked.

@alan: If you´re still interested, here come my suggestions:

PoTC v_Grimmelsahausen
Pinnace Merchantman
Barque Brig
Brig Brigatine
Galeoth Pinnace
Xebec Barque

Well, the change of the pinnace to merchantman is obvious, essentially it is one by the looks of it. I renamed the Xebec to Barque because in the Pirates Gold manual the Barque picture looks precisely like the Xebec. Well, the Barque had to have a name, so I named it Brig, because it´s the smaller one, the original Brig was changed to Brigatine. For the new pinnace, I thought a lot about it. Based on cannon and crew numbers, the lugger would have been the candidate, but I chose the Galeoth, because even though the stats say it´s bigger, it looks smaller to me than the Lugger (it doesn´t even have a proper helm).

Concerning the stats, there´s a lot I´d like to adjust, but I´m not sure if I can do so easily. For some parts it´s not just crew numbers, but gun caliber and ship class as well. I wish I could upload an Excel spreadsheet, that would be a lot easier than entering all current and intended steetings manually.

Great idea. I changed the pinnace to merchantman myself a while ago...it was just bothering me <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> The rest of your choices are very interesting, and I think they make for a nice adjustment. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Oh no, we've been bemoaning the ships designations for a long time now. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Actually, I would like to know if there's a way of changing the ship class as well. I've been considering changing the rating scale to something more authentic, like having an "unrated" class for all the luggers, sloops, etc. and then going from there with a more `Naval-type` rating system. Any thoughts?

I'd like to see a designation for the merchant class ships as opposed to the warships... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

And that´s one of the easiest things to fix. After all, I´ve been able to do it.

@Kaiser Wilhelm: The calsses, as well as the other statistics of all the ships can be seen in the shipinit.c file, but I don´t know whether they can be changed as well (they can be changed of course, the problem is, will the game still run afterwards?).

Do your changes show on the ship icons, Grimm?

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> I just noticed how many Germans are in this topic! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> Are you planning something?!!!

(let me in on it, I'm always ready for a bit of fun!) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Us? Planning? Not to my knowledge.
What changes do you mean, cat? The names are changed, in the spyglass, the sighting report (when leaving or approaching an island), the shipyard and the ship status/ship transfer screens. I didn´t dare to touch the stats of the shipsinit.c file, because I haven´t seen anything on that topic here in the forum. So, I´m pretty carefull with that.

Heh, I was just joking about the "planning" (or plotting!), Grimm! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

By the icons, I meant, the ship icons have numbers - when you do a sailto you see the icons and numbers. Do the numbers change? I can't recall whether they are dynamically generated from that shipsinit.c file or somewhere else... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I usually go by the icon number as to whether I want to attack or leave them be (too small, throw 'em back, LOL!)... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

I think the Icons and Ship class # are assigned for each specific model based on:

refShip.Name, refShip.id, and refShip.Class in the Ships_init.c file.
The newer modded ships also add the refShip.all statement.

So was I <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
The icon numbers are the classes, as far as I know, they´re in the shipsinit.c, but as I already said, for fear of breaking something I didn´t change anything there. I´d really like to, but unless someone experienced in this tells me "no problem, do it `this-and`-that way" those are strictly off- limits to me.

Well, the icons numbers ARE a part of the classes too - and if you're changing the classes on ships, this is also part of what you should edit. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

But you should, as Alan Smithee suggests, post what you are changing here, so we can make suggestions and come to an agreement on what needs to be changed. With community input, there won't be any question that these changes are "permissible". <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Are those games really an authority on ship classification?
