Ship class names

Are you looking in the *language* directory common.ini? There´s more than one, and the additional ships are defined only in the folder for English language.

refship.canbuy is a function that can be used in the shipsinit.c file. The syntax is simple:

refship.Canbuy = false

so you can´t buy that particular ship in any shipyard. It´s globally set to "true", so any ship without this line can be bought.

I think, however, you´ve got to use the classes 7 to 1 that are defined in the game. They´re ingame values defining when you can come across this particular shiptype.

thanks v_grimmelshausen, i took the wrong common.ini <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

after giving each ship type the proper rating in the ships_init.c (using 7th rate for any not rated ship) i didnt notice any effect ingame. the ship broker and the ship icons in the sailing mode didnt show the new rating. i think catalina pointed out that the numbers in the icons have to be changed somewhere else.

in a next step i increased the cannon quantity for the "lineship" in the ships_init.c from 44 to 50, since the lowest number a 4th rate ship of the line had was 50, but again only 44 cannons are displayed in the ship information (telescope). whats missing here?

Well, about changing the ranks of ships, the numbers are in the icons, so you have to edit the images directly.

I think you have to reinitialize.

Also, if you are looking at a ship that already existed in a saved game, like one of your fleet, they will not be changed.

The changes are only seen in newly encountered ships the game generates after reinitializing.

Petros is right, as well, I don´t know whether you can change the amount of guns so easily. It will certainly NOT show graphically, as the guns are integrated in the ship´s models.

thanks - reinitalizing did it. now the number of guns (from the shipsinit) and the modified rating can be seen via the telescope. well i dont know if the actual damage will increase if you increase the cannon_quantity in the shipsinit. i guess damage is calculated for each visible cannonball, that hits a ship, so increasing the quantity in the shipsinit might have no effect.

It does have an effect, actually, but the difference is minimal when yu put 8 more guns in. Tryt putting in an additional 200. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

One day I have to try that with a gunboat! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

Of course, it might just go through the entire cargo load of ammo with one broadside. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

I´ve just found something interesting that might be helpful to determine the Max. Crew number for a ship: <a href="http://www.kipar.org/`piratical-resources`/`british-man`-`of-war`.html" target="_blank">http://www.kipar.org/`piratical-resour...f`-war.html</a>
So, the Crew number is about eight times the guns on the ship, as a rough approximation.

GREAT website, thanks for the link, Grimm! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

So I thought. Two very interesting entries are the following:

The monetary system(s), incomes and goods prices:
<a href="http://www.kipar.org/`piratical-resources`/`pirate-money`.html" target="_blank">http://www.kipar.org/`piratical-resour...money`.html</a>

And travelling times:
<a href="http://www.kipar.org/`piratical-resources`/`pirate-sea_travel`.html" target="_blank">http://www.kipar.org/`piratical-resour...sea_travel.html</a>

These are most interesting, as it appears that travelling goes a LOT faster (on the average with a very big variance, of course) than implied by SM Pirates, for example. And much faster than I had thought before reading it.
One thing however, is the note below the table which I believe to be not totally correct, stating larger ships travel slower. As a matter of fact, as far as I know, it´s the other way around, larger ships are actually faster than small ones in anything but light wind. The reason is, in stronger winds, waves tend to be higher, and lighter ships spend a lot of time and speed going up and down rather than forward, while heavier ships plow right through the waves. As well, larger ships carry more sail.

There's some disabled code in aiship.c to try to account for seakeeping of large ships in heavy winds.

Regarding icons: as Drunken said, the BI icons have the number as part of the image; the 128x128 interface icons don't. It _may_ be possible to use the same method used to put the `number-as`-text on top of the 128 image to put it on the 64 (BI) one, but I don't know if that'll work in BI rather than regular interface.

Regarding ship classifications.
I believe someone (I forget precisely who) mentioned that the POTC Pinnace is actually quite close in look to the Golden Hind. I thus suggest its name be Fast Galleon (or `Race-built` Galleon), that being the name for the Northern European galleons whose forecastle was cut down (razed) to nearer deck height for better seakeeping (as demonstrated in the battle with the Armada).

But this is in part due to the mishmash from having ships of different eras all thrown together; a man of war of the 17th century would be at best a merchantman in the 18th century.

Regarding Bark / Barque. The term is AFAIK quite loosely defined until the late 18th century when it came to mean a ship `square-rigged` on the fore masts and `fore-and`-aft rigged on the mizzen with spanker and gaff topsail (as most merchant ships became during the end of the 19th century, the rig affording good speed and good handling/weatherliness). A barkentine (aka hermaphrodite bark?) being `square-rigged` on the foremast only and gaff rigged on the rest.

Brig is applied to ships `full-rigged` but with only two masts (with a spanker on the main), and likewise to barkentine a brigantine (aka hermaphrodite brig) is `square-rigged` on the fore and `fore-and`-`aft-rigged` on the main.

Thus bark, brig, and ship (that is to say, `ship-rigged`) are classifications of rig and not of size.

In earlier days, though my knowledge is sketchy, I recall that bark/barque was simply a term for a smaller ship, most often a merchantman, and thus applied to nearly everything. But I'm certainly no expert in that.

A quick googling brings <a href="http://www.blupete.com/Hist/Gloss/Ships.htm" target="_blank">http://www.blupete.com/Hist/Gloss/Ships.htm</a> which discusses barks much as above (though I disagree with their brig entry (in terms of brig/brigantine distinction).

Pinnace, Galeoth: Interestingly enough someone (again I forget who but I think JMV) did some looking in regards to Galeoth and found a Galeot, which resembles very closely (wow, the POTC artist for once got it nearer right) the Galeoth presently in POTC, that is to say a low vessel `lug-rigged` but with square topsails.
Pinnaces SFAIK were simply any small vessel, and could be lateen (as in Pirates!) or even I think square (and later gaff) but then their duties would later be taken by a sloop (that is to say `sloop-rigged` ship, rather than a sloop[fn1]) or small schooner.

[fn1]Since "sloop", as in `sloop-of`-war, was also a size classification, in that case meaning a small `_full-rigged_` (i.e. ship rigged, with three masts `square-rigged` with jibs, staysails, and a spanker on the mizzen--well, earlier a lateen spanker, but later a true spanker[fn2])

[fn2]The small `fore-and`-aft sail on the mizzen (or main for a brig) is termed the spanker, presumably for reasons you can guess; it formerly being lateen it later became gaff, for the "classic" `full-rigged` ship.

{Edited for more on fast galleons, and pinnace/galeoth/sloop/etc}

Edit: LOL, it appears I lapse into a certain form of writing when discussing rigs. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Right, a couple more notes I forgot.

First is that, as you from above I think found out, the common.ini file to edit is the one in the English subfolder.
In fact, there shouldn't _be_ one in the parent (Language) folder, it's never used and just confusing...so go ahead and delete it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Second, feel free to do whatever you like to the stats, it won't hurt a thing.
Give a holler if something you try doesn't work and we'll try to sort it out. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

And lastly, a thousand thanks for the links! That should do wonders for the 'pelago economic system!

Well, regarding the ship names, I´m no serious historian and never pretended to be one, I just changed them to feel comfortable. Of course it´ll be wrong, and the historians here might demand my head for it.

Funny you mentioned the "Golden Hind" (the former "Pelican"), I thought the ships based on the Black Pearl model resembles it pretty much (though they have too many guns, Golden Hinde had 24, with 14 below deck), while the "Pinnace" reminded me of the Merchantman from Pirates! Gold. And there was a `mid-sized` merchant ship missing.

Neither am I, so no worries there. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />
{And the same caveat definitely applies to my points! }

I see what you mean; but in both cases the castles are cut too low...and besides, by the standards of the `late-17th`, let alone `mid-18th`, centuries, the Hind probably _would_ be considered a merchantman, at least in terms of hull and rig.

The ships seem to be rather low anyways, on pictures I´ve seen, a lot of ships have two complete storeys in the poop deck, and I mean above the gun deck, where the stern chasers are mounted.
