Further to a little chat us mods are having in the forum, I think it would be interesting if we got the opinion of the visitors to the site. The thinking behind this on one side is that POTC modding has reached the top, getting people involved and playing is now limited by the availability of a game that's not available anymore. Shifting to a new engine would only repeat the cycle whereas a complete game would evolve as new players/modders joined and would have no expiry date as it would be a free for all (ala nethack)

Please note: This is just a outlandish thought at the moment nothing will be acted on (Unless everyone say's yes <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )
Also, go vote in poll <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

A pirates mod/ re-write for Oblivion or Fallout3 would be amazing.

Using the basic knowledge of this site to introduce cannon firing square riggers to that universe . . .

new definition of "Shock and Awe"

As a non-mod member, it sounds like a good way to perpetuate the intrest in the site.

Is there any non-nethack ways to create your own subscription game??? Or is that a prerequisite?

Nethack was just an example of an evolving game. I'm not sure what you mean by subscription.

Thag found a engine called OGRE 3D if that's what you are referring to.

Personally I don't think it's realistic to try this any time soon.
We'd need to start from scratch, which is a daunting task to be sure, and we'd lose a lot of the effort that went into our current work.
If anything, I think porting the Build mod to CoAS would be more realistic.
But whatever the case might be, I'd definitly want to finish Build 14 first, which might still take a <i>looong</i> time. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

CoAS was also made my one-time freelance modders for PotC.
Maybe our Build mod work could one day make it into an official expansion or something?
I'm not sure what everybody would think of our work being used commerially though. Heck; I don't know what to think of it mysef. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Why, charge a small subscription fee of course. Pay out royalties to the modders based their contribution. Start a small business, if it is based in the US, you can get grant money to start it up.

Money is a great motivator. Plus you prolly have enough talent, unique content, script, characters, etc. to put together your own title. The stuff you have done up to now for free has gotten very good reviews.

Having money involved makes it a minefield regarding distribution as well as legal issues.

That's why I suggested an overhaul mod for Obliv/FO3

Engine exists - customer buys that game

our mod doesn't add to the game

it completely changes the game to our desires

Having money involved also creates an arena of competition, and a way to subsidise the defacto product through subscription futures. It also can generate an anticipation among suscribers that would push the producers to completion. But always get the money first.(Basic business sense)

Form a team of interested parties through job opportunity offerings based on need (Too many cooks spoil the broth).

Those who are willing to work initially pro bono would gain the most. Work this out on contract.

Kick it off, and see how many interested parties. If it dies in the womb, then abort and return any monies paid to suscribers.

I think you have enough demographic information to decide if this would work.

Any managers out there could help out with a business plan.

Make a pirate mod for Fallout 3? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" /> *A middle-aged guy in a piratey power armor with a metal leg, robotic eye, minigun, empty nuka-cola bottle and a red bandana on* Yarrr! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p2" border="0" alt="pirate3.gif" /> Why's the Nuka-Cola gone? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/8q.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":8q" border="0" alt="8q.gif" /> Go get me a new one or I'll hole ya! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

That is a funny preview there deepy, but coud you imagine pirate raiders sailing the Patomac with atomic cannons that could pummel the capitol???

Arrrggh!!!!

since you know the game

you already know about its mechanics so you already know <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

a fatman could be used to simulate a cannon - non nukular ammo - complete with ballistic trajectory

flintlocks could be made from any single shot rifle

wounding, sword/knife/stick/club fighting, voice acting

Effects of Rum/whiskey/Inca Salv easy to integrate into the game engine

Scripted events and quests

free downloadable GECK (mod creating tool) <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" />

yeppers

a complete overhaul of FO3 could be programmed into a pirate universe

The only real immersion problem would be removing the Pip-boy
(but some user interface would be needed)

BTW <!--coloro:#00FF00--><span style="color:#00FF00"><!--/coloro-->official word from Bethesda<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->

<!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->It AIN'T Piracy<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> if you port <u>your own models</u> and quests into a Bethesda Game
So any item that we've modeled for any project here can be ported - with author's permission. But any item that traces its origins to any other game cannot be ported
(Look-alike items <u>are</u> allowed!! if you've created the model from scratch - but DON'T just pluck it out and move it over then call it your own.)

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Aye, Arrrrgh! Indeed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p2" border="0" alt="pirate3.gif" />

Haven't played Fallout 3 yet but I'll get it sometime soon. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> But I still know what yer talking about, it's this huge rusted and wrecky ship.. I saw a picture of it somewhere. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Yep. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

<img src="http://fallout3.files.wordpress.com/2007/05/carrier_m.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

When I get Fallout 3 I'd lose that pipboy anyways because I'd like to have my character in full power armor instead of this stinking pipboy showing. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

Overall, some interesting ideas here. My main thing is I'd like to make sure whatever game we make remains an RPG. And if at all possible, I'd like to get it so it can be multiplayer. At least 32 to 64 players on a server. And not just deathmatch, need to be able to play sandbox in the main game world, with players able to form alliances or rival factions.

Just my two dubloons worth here.

Money never worked as a big motivator for me. I've once been offered money for ship models I made for Virtual Sailor, but I never accepted it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />

I wouldn't accept the money either. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />

This sounds intersting! If you guys were planning to create a mod for fall out 3, how would start? What steps would take to put the wheels into motion?

Hmmm, can't loose the pipboy with power armor on...
