Should PA! embark on it's own game?

Death, to stat of we'd have to actually layout what we want in the game and what we could deliver, basically put it all on paper first.

That could be done via the forum as we break it up into manageable size pieces.

For any that are curious, the open source engine I came across is called <a href="http://www.ogre3d.org/" target="_blank">OGRE 3D</a>. They have a few demos that you can download and install on your computer so you can have a look at what the engine it's self is capable of doing. There are many other open source engines out there, but from what I read this one seemed to be the most flexible. It also seems to have have the most activity on <a href="http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_of_search=soft&words=OGRE" target="_blank">Sourceforge</a>, with a whole lot of addons, modding tools and full libraries written specifically for OGRE. The engine it's self is capable of running on Windows, Linux and Mac! They also have a very active forum on there web page were we could probably get help with any questions or problems we would run into. We might even be able to recruit a volunteer or two with experience scripting for OGRE.

The problem with modding an already published game is you are restricted to using a lot of content the original publisher put in the game. Building from scratch, we would be able to design it the way we wanted it to work and look. I for one am not to fond of the idea of a Steampunk type pirate in full body armor with a nuke canon, just my opinion. I think we should stick to the Golden Age of Piracy era, but if we do this and decide to go a different route, I would still be willing to help.

Pieter is right, this project wouldn't be something we could pull off anytime soon, it would probably take years to develop and is not something we could just crank out in a few month. I also don't think any monetary compensation would be a realistic goal. Like the build mod, we would be doing it for fun and because we have ideas that the developers of other games either didn't think of, or didn't think it possible to implement in the time allotted to develop the game.

Cap'n_Drow, multiplayer would be awesome, I agree. But I think that might add a level of complexity to the project that I am not sure we are capable of handling at the moment. Plus it would probably require a dedicated server to manage all the traffic and still have decent lag time. If we could figure out a way to do it though, I am all for it!

Multiplayer would be the easiest way to start I would have thought as it required no story writing or AI, just make an ocean put 2 ships in it and go for it!

However, the whole networking code and stuff could be tedious.

The best thing that could happen however is Akella release Storm 2.5 (3.0?) as they will no longer be using it now they have gone over to Gamebryo. In saying that considering there is an about to be released game with it the chances of it happening would be 0.1%.

Further to that....I wonder how much access the Russian's had to make their mod commercial quality......

Further to the further.... taking all into consideration, shifting the game to AOP might be a posswibility as it's still available and probably will be for some time as I cannot see Disney ever releasing POTC. Reason I say that is that AOP will end up being a bargin title which can be DD through GOG or GG.

PC. Thag, I love the PA! bar, can i get you to send it to me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Sure thing Kieth, I did that a while back. Was just doing some playing when I was bored.

Sorry for the off-topic post, but...

Hmmm, can't loose the pipboy with power armor on...

I've seen some mods that remove it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Personally, if we ARE going to port, I'd rather port straight to CoAS. That game actually promises to be good on its own, which can only be made better with mods. And seaward.ru would actually welcome us to do that and might even be willing to support us with it somehow. AoP is soon going the same way as PotC, so why not skip a step and go straight to the latest version?

true, i keep thinking they are the same game.

Sounds like a decent plan considering the alternatives

Aye, I'm all for porting to CoAS. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> That has many things similar to PotC. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> Oblivion and Fallout 3.. bah. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />

Well, it looks like GSC just released the source code for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, albeit one of their earlier builds.

This engine can handle wide open spaces as well as land and the graphics were pretty good.

You also get all the terrain detail/models to start off with.

Anyone know much abotu their modding tools?

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yU3BRnLfPP0" target="_blank">You Tube of what's included</a>

There are already people improving the build now adding the 2nd game graphics and stability.

<!--coloro:#ff0000--><span style="color:#ff0000"><!--/coloro--><b>UPDATE:</b><!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> Sorry jumped to quickly, it's a compiled build they have released <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

In saying that, it is a free game and the engine will be worked on by other mod teams to get more out of it. Still worth looking into methinks, Ill see if i can find any pictures of an ocean or something in it.

In terms of the release of any Akella-based game-engine for open-source, we better bury the idea. Edward told me, Bethesdasoft is owning the whole lot. I tried to contact them twice with no result. Sorry lads, just the way it is..

Regarding your discussion of converting to a new game-engine, I always pushed for the idea. Imagine, if guys like bartolomeu o portoguese or thomas the terror was introduced to the possibility of making characters act and perform EXACTLY the way they wanted to. New animations, sequenced cut-scenes, the whole lot. Imagine, if SirChristopherMings and damski62 was introduced to the idea of making any character of their imagination from scratch, in their favourite modeling tool. Now, add the sum of time most people in here put in the Build one way or the other, and we would have some great modellers, GUI-programmers, texture artists, level-designers and animators in no time. If you read my journal on moddb, you probably heard this song before, but I really think you giants deserve that complete freedom of creativity, PotC could never give you!
