Sid...What did you do??????

ggaarryy

Landlubber
As a lover of the original pirates -- I offer my comments on the game:

Sid -- after a couple of generations of games and other blockbusters since the incredible first 'pirates', how could you NOT make this game better? Beta testers -- what were you smoking when you played this game? -- thirty lashes with a wet ubs cord to both the beta testers and Sid/atari developers who listened to them.

The manual certainly brings back nostalgia -- half the information you need to know is absent (for example, land combat details or the effects of romance and marriage). And -- oh joy -- just when I thought I had forgotten about 'cd keys'.

The interface is what needs the most work and there are improvements any impaired gamer would see that could have made it a lot more fun while still keeping true to the remake. Not being able to save a game with my own file name???? HOW HARD IS THAT??? --COME ON!!!! A small window that would allow viewing the map while you sailed so you don't have to constantly switch back and forth? I'm lazy..but having to click 4 different screens to reload a game is a bit much. A better compass when you are sailing or on land??? The inability to see numerical damage of your ship and your opponent unless you go into status? The inability to even identify opposing forces in land battles or determine their status? Not having a 'time warp' feature for that endless sail from vera cruz to trinidad??? Would it be too much to think the developers could have put different languages for the nationalities instead of creating a fake language? If i here 'CUBAN' or whatever when I challenge the captain of the guards ONE MORE TIME .... The speech option possibilities had such potential and would have been even more fun for the ladies after the dance... what do I get? "I live in london' or some such eubonic type speech. etc etc etc. So much for the marketers who said..hey save money...make a language NO ONE will understand so we can market it around the world...the players won't mind! WRONG!!!

The gameplay: this is where i have the fewest complaints. It plays very much like the original (see above caveat). Dancing is fun and the most challenging part of the game aside...swordplay is too easily beaten except at the highest level. It's perhaps a bit too easy to get gold --- finding the 1st secret city gives you 100k????? Unless you WANT to roleplay, takes any real incentive out of the trading element. I do miss the ship vs port battles that were taken out.

This is not designed so much with the idea to make a new and better 'pirates' but clearly (1) a game primarily designed to make money off of our nostalgia; (2) a game that was rushed out to meet a deadline; or (3) designed primarly to port over to the gameboxes given the graphics and interface. Or all of the above.

In summary, I would recommend anyone that loved the original to buy this..but with a strong 'caveat emptor' that it falls FAR short of what it could have been. Better yet, wait 3 months and you'll be able to pick it up for half the price at wally world probably...That's about the worth of it...19.99.

I feel my loyalty betrayed.

And here I am to step in with a counter point. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Yeah, I'm back. hehe Bet ya missed me, didn't ya? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

I admit, I didn't stick around long b/c I only had PotC. Great game for sea battles, but even with the mod (outstanding work, btw! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> ), it couldn't hold my attention for long. Just got... I dunno, kinda boring.

Well, I read on <a href="http://pc.ign.com" target="_blank">http://pc.ign.com</a> that Pirates! had come out. I thought, "Ya know, that PotC was fun, wonder what this is like?...". So I read their review (gave it a 9.2 and Editors Choice Award <a href="http://pc.ign.com/articles/567/567694p1.html" target="_blank">http://pc.ign.com/articles/567/567694p1.html</a> ) and thought, "Hey! Sounds great! Let's do some more research!"

Well, I remembered your site from the PotC stint and thought, "Well, not many Pirate websites and forums around, might as well try them!"

I'll admit, you guys nearly convinced me not to buy it. I take gamer reviews more seriously than website reviews usually as gamers know what they like and don't like. It really didn't sound like my kind of game.

So I went out and bought it anyway. lol EB Games had ONE copy of the Limited Edition left, so I snatched it up.

Got back installed and wasn't impressed with the beginning. Nice subtitles and sounds, but only a sky blue screen - no video. Is there supposed to be video there?...

Well, I start up my game and get going. Start off with the English (for some reason, I always play for the English... not those damned French <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" /> .

5 hours later, I'm having a BLAST!!!!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Man, this game is just plain FUN! Granted, the sea battles are a little... weak compared to PotC, but the game plays extremely well - smooth, shiny and colorful!

First few times fencing on the ship while it's burning with men fighting in the background... Wow! lol The atmosphere in this game is outstanding! Watching those `mini-cutscenes` when you knock the guy down the stairs, or when you throw your sword... Superb! The look on their faces is priceless! One might say a little over the top, but it's just great!

I've never been a big economics guy (supply running - boooooooooring), so I'm relieved that it's pretty simple to keep your ship running. Just capture one and keep all the stuff! I've found my biggest problem is finding enough crew. Aside from running into port every couple days (camping outside and waiting), it's very difficult to get even 2/3 crew.

I thought for sure that I was going to HATE this "divide and plunder" thing as I'd be forced to start over again and again and again. Well, it's not really that bad! Granted, I'm reduced to one ship and a skeleton crew, but atleast I get to keep my coolest ship! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> One question though - when I do this, at the end there's an option to become a different kind of Captain - what does this do? I assume it'd be to unlock the better ranks with the Countries, or not? I think I've progressed to a "Rogue Captain" and I'm only 24! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> Almost forgot to mention, I'm a 24 year old English Duke with a Large Frigate captured from Henry Morgan! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Sailing around is even fun! Pillaging those SPanish treasure ships, French merchants and Dutch raiders for the good of the English crown and then installing English Lords as governors is just plain FUN!

I think this is the only game where I've openly laughed and enjoyed myself the first time I played it.

The dancing part was difficult to begin with as a lowly Pirate. Now as an English Duke, I'm getting the hang of it - and I have my eye on this beautiful daughter of the Port Royale's Governor! After awhile, I'm getting the hang of it - and it's nice that it's "beat based" as I'm a percussionist - 8 years Concert, 6 years Marching and 6 years Pep. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> Band r0x0rz!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

To attest to the dynamics of this game, I went to say Hi to my sweetie in Port Royale. Chatted with the Governor and at the end, he confessed that the evil Colonel `Mon-something` kidnapped his daughter! Oh no!!!

So now I'm personally tasked with tracking this plonk down to save my sweetie! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> Talk about cool!

All in all, I'm extremely glad I purchased this game! I almost want to say shame on you guys for bad mouthing the game and almost convincing me to pass it up - but I'm glad you bad mouthed it. Made me think that much harder and delve more into it and find out more about it. It's always good to make an informed decision. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

3 cheers for Sid and Firaxis!!!

We betatesters did what we could in the time allowed and with the version we were given, to report how we felt about the game. Some suggestions were taken, some were not, but the bottom line is, we DID work hard to test this game, and for me, I played it far beyond the requested "test of the day" because I found it a thoroughly enjoyable gaming experience. Believe me, if we had done a sloppy job, you'd be getting FAR more crashes and bugs. You have NO IDEA what the beta version was like, or how difficult sometimes it was to play what the developers wanted us to play.

I'm sorry you aren't having the experience with SMP! that you've dreamed of, but the majority of gamers who post here have been positive about it.

I guess you can't POSSIBLY make a game that pleases everyone. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Would you rather they spent money on putting different languages into the game, than say, improving the graphics engine or making the sailing dynamics better?

<!--QuoteBegin-ggaarryy+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(ggaarryy)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Dancing is fun and the most challenging part of the game aside...<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Here again, you seem to be the opposite of the majority (not that it's a bad thing, it's just interesting). I like the dancing, myself, but a lot of people seem to have trouble with it.

How long have you been playing the new SMP!, a day, a few hours, a week? Have you left it alone and found it calling to you? Or are you simply that disappointed that you wish you'd never bought it?

For many months before the game was released forums like this existed - and Firaxis and Atari reps were actively reading and posting and asking questions of the FANS... So they, to my mind, were not remiss in their drive to develop a game the fans would enjoy...

I'll ask the question THEY were asking - what would YOU like to see in the game?

Again, welcome aboard! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I like the Firaxian as well. I don't find it annoying at all.

I agree that you should be able to name your save game files... seems like you could in the beta. Dunno why they changed that. But to me, this is VERY minor, especially with regards to the entire game.

The compass is fine for me. I don't know how I'd improve it.

A don't mind the map screen. It's easy on the eyes, and frankly, I've spent so much time in the Caribe (with the original and all it's future iterations) that I hardly need the map.

Damage meters. I rather like it the way it is. It gives you visual cues as to what's happening. Holes in your sails, smoking hulls... adds to the suspense IMHO. "I dunno how much more the old girl can take!"

Land unit status and ID. I can tell a Guard unit from a Infantry unit and I know how much damage I have inflicted. Again, I don't want numerical representations to something that should be a bit more "fog of war" to me. I think it works great the way it is.

Yeah, I love the dancing too. And it is strange as most people don't care for it too much. I think it's a hoot.

As to what I was smoking when I was beta testing... nothing but some good English blend in my Danish hand carved briar! What more can you ask for. Now Catalina on the other hand, ain't no tellin' what SHE was smokin'!

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> No smoke, just rum in my extra large mug... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Just to stop any confusion, you only get the option to move up in difficulty if you have what the game considers a "successful cruise". If you have been sucking wind, you don't get the option to move up. Solution? Don't suck wind - keep it in your sails!

I'm still looking for the `power-up` hoops for my `Robo-Cyber` Dolphins to jump through them so I can upgrade my cannons.

Where are those hoops?

Fun at first...

I think the second poster summed up part of my experience...

First 5 hours - game was a blast
First `10-15` hours - still fun, getting repetitive
After that, tedious to the point that now I've moved onto newer games (World of Warcraft).

Bear in mind I was a HUGE fan of the original and I was eagerly waiting for this to come out. It just isn't as immersive as even the first one was.

Sorry if I offend anyone who deeply loves this game but I loved the Pirates! franchise and can't help but be disappointed in this "remake"

First of all, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> mateys!

Let's counter those points, shall we? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

You have absolutely no idea about what was the game like during its beta period. The beta testers did what they could in a limited time, and they did an excellent job, in my opinion. It's nearly impossible to flush out all the game's shortcoming in, what, 3 months of betatesting.
<!--`QuoteBegin-ggaarryy`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(ggaarryy)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Not being able to save a game with my own file name???? HOW HARD IS THAT??? --COME ON!!!!
1) The map slowly gets printed in your mind as you play along your careers.
2) If you really bought the game, either Standard or Limited Edition, you'd have the cloth/paper map that came in the box. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" />

<!--`QuoteBegin-ggaarryy`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(ggaarryy)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The inability to see numerical damage of your ship and your opponent unless you go into status?
Deal with it, real captains couldn't see an HP bar above their enemy ships' masts. Besides, you can pretty much see the state of your vessel without those. Plus, it adds to the suspense as someone else said earlier.
<!--`QuoteBegin-ggaarryy`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(ggaarryy)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The inability to even identify opposing forces in land battles or determine their status?
You can easily identify each unit type from each other, even Guards from Infantry. And about their status, you can guess it by looking at the visual amount of men left. What's more, you can guess it if you remember how much damage in % they've taken.
<!--`QuoteBegin-ggaarryy`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(ggaarryy)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Not having a 'time warp' feature for that endless sail from vera cruz to trinidad???
As Catalina said before, it'd have been more time spent in banal details rather than gameplay and graphics. Besides, I'd assume you'd have then complaint about "repetitive dialogues". <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

I totally disagree. Only after plundering a few ships and towns you can get to 20000 gold. The hidden treasures never hold anything spectacular (from 2000 to 10000 gold) and the lost cities are hard to find (as far as map pieces are concerned) and not always hold 100000 gold pieces, but often 50000.
<!--`QuoteBegin-ggaarryy`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(ggaarryy)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Unless you WANT to roleplay, takes any real incentive out of the trading element.
Trading is absolutely secondary to plundering and pillaging. For example, after capturing a Treasure Galleon, it's good to know where Luxuries are sold high and go sell them at that port. You can't really make a living solely out of trading. It's not the aim of the game. If you want to trade, play Port Royale 2 or The Patrician instead.

I hope we can make this game even better through modding. I mean, remember what a bunch of modders have done with PotC. In its original condition it was a piece of garbage, but with build 11 I really enjoyed it. SMP is already a good game which is lacking a couple of features, I wished that were there. As long as the modding community keeps the ball running and doesn´t loose its interest in SMP, I´m confident.

I agree with everything in the original post.

The game is still fun (A testament to the original), but nothing new is here! After all these years he couldnt think of anything more! I know I have. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dp_nogd.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ng" border="0" alt="dp_nogd.gif" />

Yes, but after all, this is still a remake. Who knows that he may be planning a whole new secret sequel. I'm almost certain that he had a lot of ideas, but that he didn't want them in the game just yet. Maybe he has bigger plans? We know Sid Meier usually knows what he's doing, and I don't think this is any different.

A remake is fine and dandy, but I think alot of people, as I, were expecting something to help it contend with the games out now.

Back in the day this gameplay was the hottest thing ever. Now, this game really is just average. I was expecting alot more.

I think they could have shot themselves in the foot by trying to incorporate ideas over an old successful platform. And the best strategy is to see how this game is accepted in todays cut throat games market (scuse the pun <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" /> ) . As is being mentioned, it leaves the possibilites for a sequel very much open and allows them to then approach with not only new ideas but perhaps a whole new way of pirating that blows us all out the water.. *sips his rum and plays pirates!* either way it be a good life that of a computerised Pirate! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I keep mentioning this....

All the game simply needs is `Robo-Cyber` Dolphins that can jump through `power-up` hoops in order to upgrade your cannons.

Sid turned this game into a console/Disney game it DOES not feel like im playing a pc title, there are so many repetitve things that this game is totaly boring beyond a days worth of play!!. Just because this game had beta testers it seems like Sid didnt listen to em and just did what he felt was right, and what happened to Jeff from atari?? he seems to have Vanished now the games out.

Let's hope our modders will turn this game into a real pirate adventure! All we can do is sit and wait <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I trust the modders.... they know what they do.
