Spanish Military Pack

On this thread over the next couple of weeks I will be posting updates to a new skin pack centered around Napoleonic Spain. When completed it will be similar to the Royal Navy pack I did last winter.

The following is a rough cut of the a Spanish Captain (or I guess it would be Capitan). I'll post updates tomorrow or Tuesday.

Best,
JMV

I wish there were more military based chars like this in the game. The British are cool cept the hats dont look just right. Maybe when someone figures out how to make new models or edit the current ones, a new hat can be developed. One can only hope!

Mmm, could you consider basing the mod in XVIII century instead of Napoleonic uniforms? I could provide some nice links and pics of Navy uniforms of that timeframe.

Take a look at this one: (although its in spanish, the pics are of great value even if you dont understand the wors. If you need translation of what the words mean i'll do it gladly <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> )

The whole site is very, very good, but it's in spanish, which is great for me, but probably bad for the majority of POTC community. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Wow. That site is excellent. I can't tell you how long I've been looking for a site like that. I had to piece this skin together from 54mm figurines, written descriptions and paintings. Wow did I get it wrong!

If you can find sites like that for the naval uniforms of Holland and France I would be in your debt.

As a way of showing my appreciation, I'll make you a skin. Which one do you want, 1724?

Hey, that's an idea. I'm putting out a bounty people! Anyone that gives me similar information regarding the naval or marine uniforms of France or Holland will receive 1 custom skin that they can design. Think of it as the chance to get the character skin you always wanted to play as. *Note, I don't do nudes, so keep requests tasteful.

This is how we can help each other out.

Nachinus, PM me with your request.

Anyone who needs that site translated from Spanish should try Babelfish online translation service:

Okay Nachinus, I used bablefish to translate the page, but I think you are going to have to clear up some phrases for me.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, the pictures with the red background are the Ship Captains, while the yellow is a surgeon, and the others with blue backgrounds are the admiral's uniforms.

If I use the British Royal Navy as a base, I assume that surgeon's in the Spanish Navy were similar to British Surgeons, who wore simply the uniform of a warranted officer, not a commissioned one. Therefore, your Spanish Bosun, Carpenter, Sailing Master, Quartermasters, Master Gunners, etc... would all wear a uniform like the surgeon on the website.

Correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Right now I'm thinking that the Piloto from 1789 would be the Captain, while the two below him would be (moving left to right) vice adrmiral and admiral respectively.

Using the 1789 Captain's uniform as a base, I could remove some of the gold work, buttons etc. or perhaps give it blue facing instead of red to create a sort of lieutenants uniform.

For the different nobility I would use the cross of Malta like in the 1761 uniform.

Please tell me if I'm wrong on this. Historical accuracy is a big deal to me, and it shames me that my original captain shown above is so blatently false.

Let's see... i'll have problems translating the exact officer or warrant officer to the equivalent in brit navy, which i know from Patrick O'Brian novels, but i read the spanish edition. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />:

Captain's uniforms are all the blue upper ones except the 1928 one. The 1700 one is a captain, but not really a 'uniform', in that year, there was no standard uniforms in the navy, but captains and officer used scarlet and red casacks and clothes.

The 1793 ones that are next to each other are captain 'mourning' uniforms, right one is for 'family mourning'.

The one at the bottom is a Captain out of duty.

The 1928 red uniform in blue background is a 'guardiamarina' (young officer).

You're right, the yellow one is the surgeon, but in the spanish navy it was not a warrant officer, but one of the "sea officers" ('oficiales de mar mayores').

The red ones, 'pilotos' are not captains they are also one of the 'sea officers', called also 'oficial de derrota', a graduation that accordingly with Patrick O'Brian books, also existed in brit navy, but as i have the books translated to spanish, i dont know the english word. They were the ones responsible of the navigation and course of the ship, i hope you know the brit equivalent.

I dont' think that warranted officers (boatswain, master gunner, etc...) had a standard uniform in the spanish navy, at least ive never seen one.

For Leutnant, here's a link to another part of the same site showing a 'teniente de navío' uniform in detail:

<a href="http://armadasiglo18.free.fr/armada18/acuarelas.htm" target="_blank">http://armadasiglo18.free.fr/armada18/acuarelas.htm</a>

There's also a naval infantry soldier pic in the bottom left in the same page.

I hope this helps <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Just in case you need more inspiration, here's another great site. Although it has TONS of text in spanish i think that the pics in the page ive pointed you to will be interesting:

<a href="http://todoababor.webcindario.com/vida_barcos/organizacion.htm" target="_blank">http://todoababor.webcindario.com/vida_bar...rganizacion.htm</a>

The pics are: (from top to bottom)

-Officer (could be used for first mate)
-Navy Leutenant
-Naval Infantry (Infantería de Marina) sXIX
-Naval Infantry sXVIII (much better!!)
-Naval Grenadier sXVIII (cool!!)

Thanks so much. The piloto is what in English is called the Sailing Master, usually shortened to simply master. From your description the 'oficiales de mar mayores' sound a lot like the British Warrant officers. Instead of going through the training that a Captain or Lieutenant would have gone through, a warrant officer knows only their profession, and then receives a special authorization from the admiralty board.

These new pics really help. Thanks again.

I'm very happy to be useful! Thank you for working in the good old spanish navy. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Good Luck Guys.
BTW, are you doing all countries or just the UK and Spain?
I'd love a French one as well, to get rid of those damn Musketeers!
-Capo

Eventually all nations. Once I am finished with Spain I will start a French pack. The sooner I get info on the uniforms, the better though.
