Start New Game Choice Selection

The current Build 13 starting ship selection is as follows:
// Ship Selection Options
#define NEW_SHIP_1 "Lugger1"
#define NEW_SHIP_2 "Sloop1"
#define NEW_SHIP_3 "Barque1"
#define NEW_SHIP_4 "Yacht1"
#define NEW_SHIP_5 "Gunboat"
#define NEW_SHIP_6 "bermsloop163"
#define NEW_SHIP_7 "LuggerVML" // KK
#define NEW_SHIP_8 "Ketch" // Petros

Does this seem right? Is this enough ships? Or too many? Are there ships on this list that shouldn't be or are there ships missing that would make good starting ships?

personaly i edit my list to include only class 6+7 ships(so no sloops - too much cargo capacity for game start imho)

2xTartanes(not that i suspect anyone would chose one with other available options - still hopefuly when we get more selections of class7 ships i think it would be a nice place for the player to start, a bit more challanging at least?)

3xLuggers(one the VML as it is very nice looking)

1xCutter(hope to have a few versions of these one day)

2xYacht(for those that like the look of square-rigged sails at game start)

As for character choices the only one i put back in is '33_ronald' - when i later get an officer i would prefer to look like(adventurer type/i remeber jack sparrow green type etc) 33_ronald makes an excellent 'tough' to have around - his size can intimidate people(role-play). And unless he's a starting char you never seem to find his 'skin' in the tailor shops?

oh i think we should have 1 male and 1 female dark player choice - they were(are!) a big part of the caribbean population and it keeps it fair?

List of ships looks good Pieter. Enough choice to please most players without being overwhelming.

I agree that I usually take a tiny ship to start, like a class 6 (seems only fair) but everyone has a different style of fun. I think your list covers all reasonable bases.

@Black Bart - good call on the "Pirates of Color". Quite right, an important part of Pirate history that is all too often ignored or discounted. I concur, put some in the player start options (1M and 1F). There's no reason a native Caribbean'r can't be a POTC hero!

Otherwise the player choices look great as well. Going forward for build 13.1 perhaps a few lines of //comments to explain how to add/remove player character & ship start options?? Might be too much info, I dunno. Anyway, you'll never keep everyone happy, but your lists look like MOST people should be happy with their start options.

H.M.M.

about the character models:
thats kinda hard to answer, because its all down to taste.

me, for example, i like to have the "Fawn" guy, as he looks most piratey to me.
also, i almost everytime make sure i have one of the whitetrash models as either a starting option, or i buy the outfit asap. no, its not about being poor. i see it more as the "eccentric millionaire" outfit <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
laid back ftw.

i can understand why devlin's model is in, but i dont like it at all: he looks as if he is traversing our universe on laughing gas. (fear and loathing in the caribbean, anyone? HEY, thats a nice title for the modpack, EY?)
i think beatrice has the same drugged walking style.

still, other than that their animations are very nice.

and not completely on topic
personally i miss a model that looks like i imagine a pirate: rugged face, long beard, messed up hairdo with one or two "rogue"dreadlocks from neglected haircare, and a stolen uniform, thats stained, and worn totally NOT according to army rules (i.e. open shirt and buttons, no hat)

what i was thinking about too, was a model that has a parrot on its shoulder, and each time you unsheath the sword, it takes off, and circles the player model. would look weird in caves i bet.

but thats a completely different thread.

I think I'll keep the choices as they are now then. There are some black characters that could be added, but then we need to make the choose character screen portraits for those as well, which would again take a while. I think it's more important to just finish Build 13 now.

BTW: Ronald should be available from tailor's shops. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

oh so we dont have the char portraits for all the chars then?(by these you mean the full body pic on the left when chosing a char? or....?)
hmm ok what would i need to do to create them - i got 3Dsmax+photoshop if that helps?

and ref Ronald(the giant bully!) - well maybe i've not been lucky enough to find him yet(and i do go in/out of the dialogue with the tailor to get more choices), a bit like sometimes it seems impossible to get the particular hireable officer you want, even after countless hours of walking in/out of a tavern? - anyway he's my 'tough' skin of choice, so its easier for me if i make him a selectable char myself - so i dont need him in the build setup <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
now thats something i can do easily i think, if THAT's whats worrying you.
i think i got the whole friday (if everything goes as planned) for this.
IF you want.

If we have to add full body portraits for all characters, even the ones not actually used as starting characters, it will still greatly increase the download size of Build 13. Are we sure we want that? We could also enable all skins as starting skins, but that would just drive the players nuts, ebcause of too much choice. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

So none of the 'black' chars have these portraits? If not then we can probably leave this as something to amend later, after build13. We have quite a few things to do as is <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

maybe malcom should function as a tailor so people can see what they would look like if they choose that character. or does it in build 13?

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

i dont think that would help. The whole begining structure of build13 has changed from build 12.1. Malcom doesnt help you with char selection any more - its all done in a better(imho) way through one starting screen - you select your nationality, char,and ship before going into the tutorial cabin with malcom.

The not so important discussion was wether to include some 'coloured' chars in the starting choices - you can always visit a tailor after, but at some point it would, i think, be nice to have atleast 2(1M+1F) 'coloured' chars in the line up(to make it more inclusive). Granted we are all probably skinny arsed whiteys, BUT you never know? I think we'll leave it for now <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Well, I think the whole point of the tailor mod and buying outfits, was for this purpose. If you just allow every skin to be a selection right at the start, it sort of defeats the player-use for a tailer (still useful for officers).

I'm just saying is all ... just a handful selection of the "diveristy" factor is all we need.

We do have the picture for Napitan: A big brown bloke. We could enable him as starting model option, but he doesn't really look like a pirate. As far as brown ladies go, I think we only have 33_Affrica and 50_India and both don't have these pictures. Affrica isn't actually used in the game anywhere; she was meant to be used in a quest eventually. And I do like 50_India a lot... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

What exactly is missing? Don't all those characters have portraits in the 64, 128, 256 folders? If not, then they won't be showing up right anywhere in game, for officers, captains, enemies, etc.

If you are only talking about a missing "textures/background/" image that is only ever seen in the New Game interface... those are easily made. Just decide on what characters you want as selections.

If I knew how to detact the camera from the back of the pchar head, I could do this, as I've got photoshop, and graphical knowhow.

Would the "free flying camera" cheat help you ?

BUT.. Hold it, folks, shouldn't we concentrate on the few SERIOUS problems left? There are IMHO enough choices in the new starting menu ( 100 % more than in B12 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> ) And those who want more can tweak that in IS.h. That is already much much more selection than usual games offer <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I don't know anything about free flying cameras, but the TAB key will put you looking out through your character's eyes.

Hook

its my fault - dont want people to feel guilty about the racial unfairness currently in the game! (im joking!!). But yeah this is stuff we can do later - gives us time to get the right graphics sorted etc. Imho we just need more colours in our caribbean, if for no other reason than to make it more authentic <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

but important stuff first(like the build release!).

More serious issues? Like, removing that broken loading screen mod? Hehe.

We've been tackling little bugs all week (gotta love that last minute crap). However the big nasties seems to have settled down a bit. I just had some time to kill before the next week (going out of town for the HOLE-E-DAZE, stupid american stuff).

Thats why it seems like bug fixes are flying out of my butt like a bad night of too many beans this week.
