LOL Nice image, Hat! Haha, yea I'd agree with Black Bart - adding the 2 black chars (1M + 1F) is a good idea, otherwise the start options are good as they are. There's enough choice without being too much, and getting new character skins is a bonus from your friendly neighborhood tailor (after all, that's what tailors are for - good call Hat).

Any changes on start options should be delayed until 13.1. Let's hammer out the more important bug-fixes and not get distracted too much by adding sparkle and shine just yet.

If Pieter wants to add India to the mix, I could make the large portrait for the char selection screen.
 
India - she's often the 'navigator' hireable officer right? yeah shes a really nice model(there are some really great char models by the way - i thought Morrowind had some good ones, but the ones in PotC are a cut above, shame they cant be 'clothed' like in morrowind.).

heck ok if we're going to think about(for a later build) a fair spread/representation of chars on selection:

1. 1 Black guy(i dont mind which: - the standard one with the bandana is ok(maybe better for crew? his model gets used on your ship as crew quite alot), the large looking guy with the red shirt and medalion and bald head is good, the 'captain' type black guy - with the fine uniform and captains hat is a good one)

2. 1 Black lady(i think theres just the one funky looking afro girl - shes an excellent model btw)

3. 1 Asian girl( the mentioned India lass - nice model also)

4. 1 Asian guy( the only one i think - has the nice jungle background on his char pic)

Then the other slots as normal? Partialy if it was to be voted on, i'd be happy not to have either blaze or whats her name(i always forget it!!) but only because their drawing/model style is so different from the rest of the game chars?
Still as purely a choice for those who like the more cartoon look, and as recognition for the work done to port those AoP chars into PotC - i can live with them <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Do we have any other ethnic minorities we could think about? I could say 'the welsh' <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> but its easy enough for me to give one of the european looking chars a proper welsh name and i'm happy <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

If you are only talking about a missing "textures/background/" image that is only ever seen in the New Game interface... those are easily made. Just decide on what characters you want as selections.

THat is what we're talking about, yes. Problem is: These pictures don't exist for all characters, so we can't just put any character in the choose character screen. We could theoretically add pictures for every single character, but it would just enlarge the Build 13 download without really adding much, because only 10 of these files would actually be used at most.

So basically the question is: We can add background pictures for all characters (someone just has to make them), we can add more starting game character options, but how many do we really want to add? In theory we could add <i>all</i> characters there. But it would increase the download size and would just give the player too much choices for his starting character. So which selection would be a good one without being too much?

the amount of chars available for selection is perfect imho - so no lets not add any more. I'm just proposing we make the number of choices we currently have be more racialy varied - to make the game more accesable to people who might 'like' to start as a black or asian char?

Its really just 4 models out of the choices we currently have - in terms of whats left i'm perfectly happy with taking any 'white' char from those and going to the tailors if i want to personalise my char.

Of course any player who wants a black/asian char CAN do the same - i just think it would be more fair if those players had a 'colour' choice at game start?

But its not something we need to beat ourselves over - just a thought, suggestion tis all, and one we can leave untill after build13 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Ok these are the 4 models i think we should have in the starting list at some point, some may already have all the graphics?:

1. 33_Africa - female African with funky hair - very good lookin model too.
2. 50_India - female light tan(Asian?) - very good lookin model also.
3. Napilan(large African guy red shirt) OR Corsair1_3(African in a smart Captains style uniform)
4. Mongol - Male Asian on jungle background

I spent a good hour just messing around in the Tailors shop in Oxbay - out of those listed above the only one i could get on the rare occasion was the 33_Africa model. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
 
The models available at the tailor's shops depend on the nation. 50_India, for example, is available from Spanish tailor's shops.

If you want to change the starting character selection by replacing four models, which models would you want to remove? Personally I can't imagine anyone who would want to play as "mongol", so perhaps we could limit it to replacing 3 models? But which ones?

Actually, I skinned both 50_India and 50_33Petra with Puerto Rican in mind.
Most of my characters are in fact Spanish.

This is why I wanted to redo them all, as those ones there are aweful. Stiff figured, look like dress up dolls on a bad perspective drawing of a cabin. No offense to whomever did those. They are bad.

I wanted to take actual ingame shots of each of the selectable characters for a new game. No point in doing shots for other characters not selectable. Adding pictures for "all" would be a waste of time, and resources. Not to mention disk space.

Thats why I asked about detaching the camera, so I could 'set up' a shot and take it, for each skin. Easy enough disabling malcolm in the cabin so this can be done in the nice 'starting cabin', so that it all ties together as "This is the character you will be selecting, and this is how they look in the game".

If I could get the camera thing working, this would only take me a few hours to do, and then its done. But before that, you all need to decide on 'which' characters will be the starting selection.
 
well my list to take out the current options could include:

Blaze+Blazegirl - for the reasons i mentioned(graphical inconsistancy+non death animations) So two can fit in there(Black Female/Black Male)

sadly i've never got on with the "captain norrington"(?) one - the char pic is also graphicaly inconsistant, and the model(no offense meant to the repective modder-please fight your corner if insulted!) isnt the best imho. So thats could be one more.(Oriental/Mongol in here?)

Hmm we need to shift one more of the white lasses? i'm easy - take the ugliest one out! whomever that might be(so shallow - i ashame myself sometimes) - or suggestions? as i dont really look at them?(50_India in here)

As for Mongol - i actualy really like the char model, he makes a great 'tough'(looks it too) and if i was an oriental guy i would choose him as he is the only oriental male model in the game.

This was just about giving a wider choice to a wider group of possible players - who knows, we may get people from these ethnic backgrounds who like the game, and imho it will just make it easier for them to get into the game? And besides it seems very hard near game start to get these chars any other way(except rarely as hireable officers), and leaving Oxbay with as near as perfect selection of officers and your favourite char model is a very satisfying start point for the rest of your adventures.

@ Petros - yes i can see compared to the dark proper Indian looking girl, she could have been of spanish origin(thats why i put a ? after the Asian - as she does look more spanish).
I just think as an 'ethnic' female choice 50_India is a much prettier looking model? Still if people like the darker Indian looking one, or think it more appropriate i'd be happy with it.

do any of the above possible char replacements have all the graphics they need? I can help do them if this is going to be a serious consideration for build13(i'm not sure if this is the idea here?).
 
Well, its a 'simple change' of list for Build 13. Its just those lower left full-person portraits that are shown in the Begin New Game interface that need making. Like I said, easy enough, so long as I am given the final list of characters by end of tomorrow. I could shoot pieter off the graphic files for Final build quickly.

However, I guess I need this "camera cheat" ... whatever that is ?

oh and ref list i think it looks like this:

1. Corsair1_3(black guy in 'captains' uniform, described just in case the model info from pieters site has changed)
2. 33_Africa(black girl)
3. 50_India(fake asian girl!)
4. Mongol(contention over this one maybe?) or any other Asian/oriental looking male char?

At some point, on the issue of backgrounds, i noticed the smaller char face graphic(used in the passanger inventory etc) on many chars has no actual background, while others have 'Sea' background. 1. Put the command locCameraFree(); into console.c

2. load a LAND location

3. press F12

4. use mouse and the keys that usually move your character to move the birdview camera
 
I guess I cant get a straight answer on what characters will be THE LIST of choices. I surly hell as hope its not just those 4.

i'm with Kaziete on the Beatrice model, although this is the caribbean - so i can see why should would take her coat off - and i wouldn't complain as such, unless the 'men' started to make mistakes takin thar sail in etc etc (oh and i think Blaze looks very odd when running - like watchin a marvel hero? but yeah i can see the 'fun' factor - so i'll leave thr AoP chars alone <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )

We have armour types available - a nice selection of 'flavours' of skin tone - military(navy) types happy - cartoon Hero/Heroin types happy - tradition happy - superpowers happy - movie fans happy - 'lusters' happy <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

that only leaves the 4 that possibly need the backgrounds? (33_Africa/Corsair1_3/Mongol/50_india).

Bare in mind we have the tailor shops for tinkering or can put in our exact prefrence when we like(e.g i'll always put 33_Ronald in my version somewhere)- this is all about giving a wider spread of choice on game start to cover as many bases/players backgrounds as possible. remarks?

9TD is not the one you're thinking.

50_Becka is the one you want. The tailor says "Here is a governor's daughter, who wants to go to sea."

Also I don't know why the confusion with India. The tailor says "A descendant of Spaniard and Carib, she knows the Caribbean well."
