starting bad...

Ambrose LeGaillard

Powder Monkey
I have started to play POTC, but I'm in some troubles because the high diversity from SD.
Once a time (SD) I was good at the duels in the captain cabin, here I continue to take hits and die after few hits. Also the other ships are too much, I continue to try avoid pirates because the "Victory" (what a name! better call "Defeat") its a very scarce ship, few cannons, and even the lowest piece o' wood in the sea can damage me a lot: usually I sunk in a few hits....
Then now I continue to seek for cargos to sell and people to move here and there, lowered my crew to 40 to pay less money and get more gain. My actual aim its to get a barque, then move more cargo, but I cant take one by boarding. My skills are 1 leadership, 1 cannons and 1 commerce, lev. 2.

Hm...not more for a merchant/pirate...

If you have a hard time doing 1-on-1 duels, be sure to make use of the tutorial's ability to fight against Malcolm Hatcher.
It is pretty simple when you get the hang of it:
1. Keep the Block button pressed until the enemy finishes swinging his blade
2. Attack him straight away
3. Press Block again
4. If he now lunges in pain, then hit him again straight away!
5. Keep Block pressed until the enemy finishes swinging his blade again
6. Continue until the enemy is dead

You should be able to win most all evenly matched duels with no troubles at all.

============================

As for your ship, you say she is called "Victory"; Do you have our modpack installed? She's supposed to be the "Sea Horse" now. :confused:

============================

Try to capture enemy ships that are of your own size or smaller. Don't pick off more than you can chew.
Get some officers first to boost your skills; otherwise even a same-size ship is not an evenly matched fight.
If you cannot afford any officers, try to haggle their price down! Once you get the hang of swordfighting, go into the dungeons for some looting.

Also, consider following the main storyline for a while.
That will give you some more money and possibly give you the opportunity for a somewhat bigger ship without having to fight for it.

These are just some small, global recommendations you can try. I'm sure Hylie Pistof has a lot more advice for you.
And if you DO have our modpack, there are a lot more options open to you at the beginning and throughout the game.

Your skills are 1 and you are at level 2. That indicates that you have just started the game. Of course you die easy! You hardly know which end of a sword to hold, much less how to use it. Improve yourself before trying anything heroic.

Your ship is named Victory? Are you playing stock POTC or an early mod? The current starting ship is called the Sea Horse. Again, patience is the key to success. Build yourself up before you try to take another ship. At your current level your cannons will hit something besides water only about 1 of 6 shots.

To build yourself up faster you can go to Jamaica and visit the opium den. Toff on Kralendijk can help some too.

As I said before, for now i'm going to commerce and carry people.

Usually i do this:

see the prices in isle#1
go around until I find the same merchandise at lower price/OR/a new merchandise never sold in Isle#1, then, control for wealthy passengers;
come back in Isle#1 and sell all, then continue with my passenger (if I have one).

If I see a battle with pirates, I come to see: if things are good for me, I help the other ships to send at Davy Locker's chest these scoundrels trying to get less hits than I can (this give exp),ifthe battleisn't for me, simply I flee using the best wind and posture before them come to run after me.

Passengers? You mean the ships you get to escort by talking to the tavern owners?

True. Pretty easy money, but you've got to hope the trip covers the expenses of crew salary and rations.

Once the start (before Main Quest French attack) I had 57, then reduced to 40,and I'm thinking to lower more until 30, sufficient for a lil piece o' wood like mine.. Less money, more gain.

After all we had Sea Republics, Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa, Venice....we're shrewd merchants here. :dance

Crew members, you mean? Yes, as long as you don't get into battles, reducing the crew is definitely cheaper.
You could even sell your cannons for extra cash if you want. Risky, but you can do it. :yes

fine idea Hylie,
100 (shots):4 (ammo type)= hmmm the right amout,yes,yes.
This may work. My barque will come nearby....

love the barque,the best commercial ship ever had.
Not too much, good resistance, and a laaaaarge space for cargo.
maybe suffer a bit for sailing speed, but its a very good deal for a merchant.
