The Flying Dutchman

Thomas the Terror found a Flying Dutchman model on the Russian modding forum. You hear me correct: A Flying Dutchman <i>model!</i> Thomas the Terror and I made her compatible for our game. Thomas made new sails for her and retextured the inappropriate lamps. I removed the flags from her masts (after all, the Dutchman doesn't fly any flags) and added her into the game. We were unable to find a good walk file for her, so we decided to remove the sailors from her deck altogether. After all: She is a <i>Ghost</i> Galleon. Below download should be readily compatible with Build 14 Alpha 7, but she can also easily be put into Alpha 6 by moving the sail texture out of the <i>Sails</i> subfolder and adding the Flying Dutchman entry manually into ships_init.c.

One small problem that will need to be fixed is that she doesn't have any interface pictures, so some would need to be made. *hint, hint*

<b>Edit:</b> File updated with new sails and triple forward chasers

I think the rigging should be corrected, because that doesn't match, so if anyone who is familiar with this, please correct it.

Of course it's still an AoP Lineship with some added bits and pieces. Would indeed be nice to have her sail plan corrected, although I admit I am not much familiar with how it's supposed to be. If only Captain Hawk were here; he'd be the perfect man for the job.

it sure looks nice, but the stern is WAY off. in that case, razor's version is the closest. but this one has a better bow.

You know, this bow is a separate piece, so it's not like Razor can't use it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I am inclined to have this model used for the Build until we have a version that is definitly better. For example: This model with the sail plan improved to look more like the film version. *hint, hint*

I updated the downloadable file, adding Kazeite's sails instead and tripling the forward chaser guns. Be sure to check it out if you were using the previous version.

Today I compiled together a Film Ships mod. Included are all versions of the Black Pearl and Flying Dutchman. This file should be readily compatible with Build 14 Alpha 6, but can also be made to work with Alpha 7, although this requires some modifications to the code. Also included are some slight fixes to the ships_init.c file which should enable the Superior Warship and Spiegelretourschip to become available at sea and from shipyards. Additionally some cannon calibres on ships have been modified and the Satanist Frigate now has red sails by default.

<i><b>Included are the following ships:</b></i>
<b>WickedWench:</b> Kazeite's Black Pearl before she became black and cursed.
<b>CursedPearl:</b> Kazeite's Black Pearl with black torn sails.
<b>theBlackPearl:</b> Kazeite's Black Pearl with patched black sails.
<b>CursedDutchman:</b> The Russian Flying Dutchman as seen under the command of captain Davy Jones. Modified green ship texture with modified lamp texture by Razor, green seaweedy sail texture by Kazeite. Rigging and tripple guns added by Razor.
<b>FlyingDutchman:</b> The Russian Flying Dutchman as seen under the command of captain Will Turner. Original brown ship texture with Thomas the Terror's lamps and sails. Rigging and tripple guns added by Razor.

Beckett's black-and-yellow manowar? That would be a nice ship to have in the game. I think she's called "Endeavour", although I might have spelled it wrong as well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

FYI, it appears that <i>Endeavour</i> (yes, you spelled it right, Pieter <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ) is the ship of the same class as <i>HMS Dauntless</i> - at least I couldn't find any significant structural differences (I say structural, because <i>Endeavour</i> has different paint job, extra cannons on the main deck and (presumably) different figurehead). So, if you'll make <i>Endeavour</i>, you'll also have <i>Dauntless</i> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Sorry for being scarce for a few months. Our internet crashed and we tried to argue with Earthlink and got nowhere, then tried to get Comcast to come out and install it for us for a few weeks. Each time they came to give us internet, they "found" a shot outlet and had to reschedule our installation appointment... :p But I am back now and am eager to continue contributing to this mod.

From what I've gathered on wikipedia and other sources, the <i>Dauntless</i> is a 98/100 gun ship and the <i>Endeavor</i> a 104 gun ship. (I think the crew that made the movie spelled her name in the American style, to my disappointment... she's British!)
Some differences between the <i>Dauntless</i> and <i>Endeavor</i>:
The <i>Dauntless</i> has a flagmast and flies her Royal Navy ensign there, whereas the <i>Endeavor</i> flies her EIC colors from the gaffboom on the mizzen mast.
The ships have a different shade of yellow along the gunports, the naval vessel having a more golden tone and the EIC vessel having a sharper yellow.
The golden stripes are slightly broader and flow under the gunports a bit, whereas the yellow ones are the exact height of the gunports.
The <i>Dauntless</i> has a sort of scroll work plate on her stern to bear her name; the <i>Endeavor</i> simply has a name painted across the stern.

I can see that you managed both versions of the <i>Dutchman</i> without my drawings and therefore am releived. I spent all my summer trying to fix my internet and never got to draw the ship for you guys! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I think that the <i>Flying Dutchman</i> is pretty much finished, so I believe its reasonable to say that we should shoot for an actual first rate model and two skins rather than a couple reskins of an existing one. The whole Frankenstein thing... putting three ships together to make a model... seems interesting. Might I suggest a few ideas?
The hull of the AOP first rate has a good tumblehome and fine detail, but she's slightly void of good deck furniture and other major pieces, so that could be embellished upon. The bow and stern of the AOP model are disappointing, the stern being just a box with a texture and the bow little more than a cutwater. Perhaps we could reshape those parts, add pieces to the deck, change its sailplan accordingly... and voila!
I know it would slow framerate, but other than building a model from scratch or stumbling upon a Russian one... what do we have?

Perhaps Will's Dutchman version still needs some slight work. For example: Adding golden lion-heads around the gunports. At the moment the Davy and Will hull textures are the same, except Davy's version is slightly more greenish.
