Tool for making characters and converting VRML files to gm

Patches: No, you can't currently drag the image around. I know that needs to be implemented and it's not really difficult - I just have too many projects. But I'm putting it on the `to-do`-list.

GmViewer: Don't mean to insult you, but have you pointed it to the right directory where the character textures are (the selection box below the one where you choose the models)? The gm files contain just the texture names, but no path. The game sets the texture path via script, but Gm Viewer (and the tool also) needs to be directed manually. The textures for locations and such are in the main TEXTURES directory, whereas the character textures are in the CHARACTERS subdir - but obviously you know that, with all your wonderful retexturing.
I have absolutely no idea what else could be wrong, for me it works nicely with textures on everything. And the textures on characters are in no way different from any other textures.

Cool, I'll be waiting for that update.

And yep, the problem isn't directing it to the right folder. I am sadly clueless why characters don't work in it the way other models do.

Do you see them textured in the tool? For retexturing you'd work with tga anyway, so then you should be able to view the characters.

Alan, now don't you complain there's yet another new version of the tool - you did ask for it!
You can now drag the image in the patch editor window.

Besides it can show you the animations of (male human) characters!

Because I was working on this I hald little time for the helpfile, but I did put in a small amount of text.

You were asking about the "Create new room" functionality - here's what it should look like:
<img src="http://home.arcor.de/swigard/Pictures/NewRoom.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />

And here's the control window for the "Decorate room" stuff:
<img src="http://home.arcor.de/swigard/Pictures/DecorateRoom.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />

(Both these picture are in the helpfile, too).

<!--QuoteBegin-alan_smithee+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(alan_smithee)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->And a more general question in this vein, with the Gm viewer and textures: My viewer can never show me skinned characters, though it has no problem with showing textures on objects. I know a lot of the rest of you can view characters with skins... so what am I doing wrong?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I´ve got the same problem, not textures on characters. With objects, I haven´t tested, but I´ve directed the viewer to the right directory (where the tga.tx files are). I´ve even tried to convert them, but other than tga.tx files don´t appear in the viewer at all.

Can it be because there´s one more .gm file than texture (with me, at least)?

No complaints at all luv! But here's what I get with that room: Now that I learned I could zoom out, I did so, and there's the new room. Cool. But untextured. But that's my own problem and I know it'll work when I set some things straight; I got one model to show up textured, so it works, but it's a bit of a trick because I have too many copies of the game in different directories and I can't keep them all straight.

Anyway, so step one worked. I could also place objects no problem. But when I try and save... `kee-rash`. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> I'll send you the error mesage when I can remember.

I tried to remove the extra texture file, it didn´t help. Anything works but the characters and heads.

Maybe, probably, it´s a stupid question, but do I have to do something with that .dll file that´s in the package? For now, I didn´t touch it. The readme to the GM viewer, by the way, isn´t very helpful, either, most of it is some gibberish.

<b>v_Grimmelshausen</b>, no, there's nothing you have to do with any dll. GmViewer should work `out-of`-`the-box`.,

<b>alan_smithee</b>, the tool has a textbox for the texture directory above the 3D Window. Just put the path to where you keep your *tga* textures into that. It deedn't be below the gamidir aor any speacial location.

And both of you: with the tool you should be able to see characters textured, and even animated.

Trouble with Textures

If ya can't see the Textures in the Viewer and did all right i guess you both use a ATI graphic card. It is impossible (for me it is) to see the Textures in the Viewer, sorry. (or you change to nvidia of course)

But if it's because of the graphics card it wouldn't work for all textures, would it? Grim and Alan see textures on all objects except characters and heads (if I understood that right).

But characters and heads are the only models with animations. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />
If these animations are stored like in md2, then their have to be for each animation step a unique frame.

edit: Animals and low characters also have animations and i see also no texture in gm viewer.

POTC uses bone animation, so there is only one mesh for all frames.
However, you have a point there: for animated models there is some extra bone information for each point in the mesh, so they are indeed different. What I don't get is why some people (myself, for example) can see them textured in Gm Viewer, and some people (like you) can't. Are there different versions of GmViewer about ?

I never understood that one, either. I think there's only one version of GMView - but some people for some weird reason just do not get the images... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

A few months ago I tried the viewer first. It worked one time, and the second time nothing showed up, and i dumped the thing in frustration.
Lately I reinstalled exactly the same download again, and it has worked fine ever since.
So it maybe not different versions but different installations or configurations. Or just bad luck <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

FWIW, I've never got GM Viewer to load/display models. It always returned an error message complaining about a godforsaken address in the memory...every time a different address.

I assume it has to do with hardware. I have an ancient video card that doesn't even allow me to play PotC. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

It could really be the animated models, I can´t see textures on animals as well.
And I#ve got a slight problem with the Man o War modell, I can´t scroll around it, it always sort of hooks up on my mouse when I do a left click. Anything else works fine.

But I suppose I´ll get me your tool the weekend after the next. Can´t hurt to have it, can it?

<b>Hayreddin_Barbarossa</b>,
Hello, good to see you again! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

About <b>GmViewer</b>: If GmViewer doesn't work at all that's indeed probably the graphics card, but if only on animated models it can't show textures that must be something else. I think wer're getting closer, but I suggest all of you who can't see textures on characters reinstall GmViewer before we investigate further.

<b>v_Grimmelshausen</b>, it's not a bug, it's a feature <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />
The problem you're having with the man of war is because GmViewer switches to "fly"mode for large model (I hate that, too). Hold down the mouse button and move the mouse to navigate.

I've got that thing from POTCwiki. Simply unpack and runing, nothing to install. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Hello Inez! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> You know, a "feature" is the programmer's word for a "bug". <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" /> LOL!

It runs itself but can't load any models, so I assume it's my TNT2. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

Hello Inez ...great tool you have here <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I'm finally getting around to learning 3d modeling & so have for the first time have had a chance to use it.

I have a problem tho. The editor I'm using is Blender3d (cause it free, open source & upgraded) anyway, I can build a model & exoprt it to vrml 2.0 but it only supports importing of vrml 1.0 ..not 2.0. Is there any chance a newer version of your tool will support another format, like say .obj?

I realise you're busy ..I'm just curious.

A question for everyone..

does anyone know of a tool that will import vrml 2.0 & export 1.0 or .obj or a number of other formats that blender supports?

ps..I still say I like what you've done with this place ...very nice <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
