Well I finished the new stern and bow, here are some pics of how it looks in maya::keith

before someone gets on my case about the blue on the stern,:p please take a look at this model of the USS President
http://www.ageofsail.net/aospres1.asp
and this model of the USS Constitution as launched

and this diorama of the duel between the USS United States and the HMS Macedonian

I built the stern to the plans of the USS President, with a few asthetic tweaks:) the headrails are built from the original plans of the class, but the middle rail had to be cut short at its aft part because the bow chase gunport was put in. This would've happened on the real ships of this class anyway (they all had gunports like this cut into their bows at some point in their careers) so I don't really see it as unrealistic.

Armada, I do have a quick question. I was thinking of changing the angle of the bowsprit to fit the angle shown in the plans of the USS President. (it is closer to horizontal) Would this create problems with locators? by the way I really like how you broke the bowsprit into two interlocking parts for when it is shot away, it should look alot better than having separate mast stumps enclosed within the mast:onya

That's definitely an improvement. Don't forget the more important changes listed earlier, schedules permitting.

what more important changes?o_O its already scaled up, it only needs locator work and the like to get it back ingame. it now has 24pdrs as its max caliber, umm this version will be used for the United states class frigates, and probably the "HMS Endymion" and the Acheron versions too, while the version that armada posted screens of at the beggining of the thread will be used for the specific USS Constitution version of the United states class frigate.

EDIT: ohhh, now that I think about it, you probably consider changes to rigging to be "more important changes" than making the hull look nicer and historically accurate...we aren't at that stage yet where the rigging changes can be made

I'm afraid I wasn't completely clear earlier... I should have said "the more important changes that were mentioned earlier but have not yet been made." I guess that they are mostly rigging at this point. I think the hull is equally important for this particular vessel.

Ah ok, makes sense. I know armada wanted to wait until the ship is ingame to talk rigging, but it could save a bit of locator work if we talk about staysails now. which ones do you think should be included? Just looking at your parts of a ship guide, I would think that setting mizzen and main topmast staysails, along with maybe the middle staysail or main t'gallant staysail would look fairly balanced in both full sail and battle sails, but I'm just guessing at what might look right, you probably know what would actually work right:)

Wow! That's just beautiful! Lovely work, mate. :woot

Thanks man! I'm glad you like it:)
Do you think what I was talking about earlier with the bowsprit would be feasable?

Sorry, I replied in a hurry before. Changing the bowsprit angle would be feasible, but adjusting the locators would be quite difficult, I'd imagine.
It's not a simple case of multiplying each coordinate by a scale factor; instead there would be some complex mathematics involved.
That doesn't mean I can't sort it out, but it would rely on you giving me the exact angle by which you adjusted the bowpsprit.
Without that, I guess each locator would have to be repositioned manually one by one, which would take a little longer.

No worries! :) I can certainly figure out the angle to adjust it by, If you are willing to do the math:p jk, I think it should just be some trigonometry, If I understand locators right. If you want I could probably figure it out if you gave me the coordinates for the locators once they are scaled up. But If you think it will be a real hassle not worth the effort it could probably be left as is.

I think topmast stays'ls alone would be the most accurate setting, although you could add a main t'gallant stays'l if it looks too bare. If you're going to change the angle of the bowsprit would now also be a good time to mess with the head'ls? (I think the extra sail locators we discovered on the brig Enterprise would look good. I think it was discussed in the Prince thread. That would add an extra bit of realism.)

sounds good about the staysails, i'll try just the t'gallant staysails first. Unfortunately the extra locators exist only in COAS.

Is the rake of the masts correct? It's a little hard to tell in the pictures.

they seem to be about right. I don't want to change them because that would create a ton of work as far as locators go.

Armada, I just measured and it seems that the bowsprit before I modified it had an angle of 25 degrees from horizontal, while after I changed the rake it has an angle of 20 degrees from horizontal. Here is the latest file, I think it is all done, but let me know if I made any mistakes or left anything unfinished:onya http://dl.dropbox.com/u/43901618/CArmstrong/Models/USS Constitution/USS_President.mb
(of course feel free to rename the file as necessary, I just thought it was easier to tell the two versions apart as I worked on them this way)

Looks great! :onya I couldn't figure out your reasoning. Why are we going with a blue stern though?

But photographs of the ship clearly show that it's black. Maybe I don't know. Was it not always black? Is the present day black stern a modern thing? Did it used to be blue?

Great work on her so far. She's my favorite of the historic ships. :onya

Stern of the 'Hull model' (a present for the former capitan Isaac Hull, made by the crew of the Constitution in 1812)
Hull_Constitution_1812.jpg

The 3 portholes for the stern chasers came in 1814 IIRC.

And model based on the Hull version: http://shipwrightjournal.blogspot.de/2012/01/uss-constitution-1812-version-built-by.html
Beautifull, but the corrosion on the copper-plating is excessive imo :)

EDIT: now that I´ve reread the whole thread, I´m a bit confused. Do you want to give Old Ironsides a 1812 appearance or do you want to model the President? ^^
