We need a new modpack compiler

Hello all,

As some of you might know, by the end of this year I will go sailing for six months for my education to become an officer aboard a ship. So someone must continue the work that I took over from Nathan Kell.

If anyone would want to try taking over from me, I think it would be a good idea if we discuss that here and start with that before I leave. I would be quite willing to help that person while I am still around. When I have to leave, I want to be sure that you'll be able to continue without any troubles. I don't want this community to die. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

ahoy there pieter, what exactly does a modpack compiler do??? I would love to help in any way I can, but I am not all that good when it comes to computers (actually i sorta suck at it), also I havent got too much time with my medical studies... so maybe it shouldnt be me... but if I can help in any other way, say the word mate... I know youve helped me and a lot of other people here, and were all equally eager to return the favor.

A modpack compiler does basically what I do: Put all the mods together in such a way that it works. Then make the modpack available. There needs to be a modpack compiler, because somebody needs to compile all seperate mods into one new Build update. Having some knowledge about computers is a prerequisite though. You need to know how the PotC code works, otherwise you could never put it together properly. The WinMerge program helps a lot, but you still need to understand how it works for a bit.

You don't need to be a VERY good coder to be the modpack compiler, but the more you know of how it works, the better it is. When I started I didn't know much of it at all, but I learned along the way.

So? Is there anyone else with some comments about this? I think it IS a pretty important issue, so we do need some comments... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> there, Pieter.

Would this be temporary? Would you resume as ModPack Compiler when you returned, assuming you have the time?

More so than the actual technicalities of compiling, I think that the Modpack Compiler should display a great evenhandedness when dealing with everyones requests, contributions and discussions, etc, and that you certainly have. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

maby if you teach me trough msn i would take over i have 2hours a day time and i always wanted to help the comunity and in the weekends i have more time

what i mean i have time to do the job but don't know much

Somebody else will need to do this for at least those six months. When I return I might take over again. But that would depend on whether the new modpack compiler would want me to and whether the community would want me to as well. All provided that PotC modding is still at large next Summer.

I don't really WANT to stop doing this work, but I simply have to if I am hundreds of nautical miles away from my PC with PotC. Maybe I'll get a laptop though and continue anyway. If I manage to get aboard a Holland America Line cruiseship, they do have internet there. But still I think it is a good idea to discuss the idea of someone taking over from me, because the chance that I will be able to keep doing it will be VERY small indeed.

I repeat it again: I would very much like to know your views on this matter. Also please say what kind of qualities the modpack compiler should have in your opinion. I think it is important to discuss this topic while I'm still here to help a new modpack compiler get familiar with the "job".

Also please say so if you know of somebody (you, a friend or another forum member) who might make a good modpack compiler.

To Cpt.YuKe: Please keep in mind that this is a responsible task that is far from easy. I could try to teach you how to do it for a bit, but basically you have to learn it yourself. I learned it myself. Using WinMerge makes the work MUCH easier, but knowledge of the code is still required.

It helps if you know at least a bit about everything in PotC. You don't need to know so much that you can actually mod everything yourself, but if you see new modding work from other people, it is good to understand what it is they have done and how they tried to do it. It would be especially useful if you can also spot obvious mistakes.

If you want to, you could try to use WinMerge and have a look at the differences between the contents of pre_b13_full.zip and the latest modpack update available from my site. See if you understand some of the differences. And ask me anything you don't understand. That will give you an idea of what kind of things the modpack compiler would have to do.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> Pieter,

You will certainly be missed when you go. You have done and are doing a fantastic job. I can't help but I certainly hope someone will step up and keep this going. I fell like it is even more important to get a stable Buil 13 out before you go.

I hope you get the posting you want.

I'd love to aid in any way I can, but my schoolwork is keeping me to a mere "just enough time to get on for a few and check my messages."
I should be on a lot more next summer, but that is, of course, too late. I do pray that we find an able member that has the time, knowledge, and fairness that Pieter had... which of course will be tough, what with Pieter leaving a legendary streak on this forum! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />
If there is any way for me to help, I will do my best with what time I have! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I'm no help. I've been toying with historical research and such, but I don't know beans about code.

Ron

This is still an issue that needs to be kept in mind. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Well, I'll be missing our Modpack Compiler very much.

I think that our community must be preserved, as we still have much to do with PotC. Therefore, if when Pieter leaves there is no candidates, I could do it temporarily, until Pieter is back. However, I must stress here following things:
- I want to create mods; I have some more ideas I didn't created yet due to lack of time;
- I'll start work soon; as that's new situation I can't tell now how much time I'll have for PotC. It seems I'm getting too old for playing PotC.

So, please, treat my offer only as the last resort.

pirate_kk

Thanks a lot, Pirate_KK! At least we HAVE an offer now. I think you'd make an excellent modpack compiler. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I dont have the experience needed for the job, but what i will be able to do is help out who ever takes the job on. So if it does become pirate_kk(ahoy! we havent met yet but i have heard and seen your excellent involvement in modding here), or whomever, they shouldn't feel completely isolated with the task.

I am no coder(of any use to this project), but if the nominated compiler needs a crewman to do a dull and low grade job, like extensive playtesting/bughunting, text file work/checking etc or even just bouncing ideas from; then i will and hopefuly should remain available to assist - just ask and i'll be able to tell you if i can help or if its above my abilities

So a <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> from me to whomever it may be.

Thanks for that offer, BB. But playtesting is no "low grade" job at all, it is at least as important and demanding as the writing of mods <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

KK, thanks a lot for volunteering for the compiler task. You have my full support <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

You too old? I think many people here are at least twice as old, and we are about to turn PotC into a serious game for mature "best agers" anyway <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

With Build 13 almost done and the work process on Build 14 slowly being formulated now, this issue will need to be brought under the attention again. I have been accepted as trainee officer with the Holland America Line and I will be gone for 150 days starting this February. I might be able to keep a bit up-to-date with the developments on the PotC modding front because the HAL ships have Internet, but we can't count on that. This means that somebody will have to take over from me during that time if we want PotC modding to continue into the next year.

i really dont want to give another frustrating "Id love to, but i really would suck at it" reply, so ill just say:
even if i had only a few days of looking at all the accomplished work, i must say:
EXCELLENT job so far. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />
getting it all together must have been like taking care of a bag of fleas,
i really appreciate what you and all the modders accomplished.

i salute you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" /> and set you all on TRIPLE RUM RATIONS! YAY!

Congrats Pieter on yer upcoming venture, Enjoy this opportunity to its fullest mate, you have earned it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> POTC will still be here when you get back.
P.A. Management wishes you the best and we will keep tab while yer away , until your return, Pinned your topic , hope you donn't mind <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Pirate_kk, like Black Bart I offer help if you take the compiler task. I´m 52, am I too old to "play"? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />

Once again, Pieter, congratulations on your appointment. I would be more than willing to help or even take up the part of compiler, but still need more time learning the code and figuring out what is what.

As I'm sure you and other know, I'm also doing work for more that PotC, but for AOP as well. I think I'm finally getting a handle on using the Maya plugins (not sure about that yet, as I'm not finished going through the construction and export thread). I'm also working on a bunch of new documentation and doing what I can to help the community by updating information and building some new tutorials based on all I've learned here.
**grins**

Any way you work it out, I'm willing to act as assistant or primary and do my damnedest to help make the game and this community one of the best and most complete around.

Good luck on choosing your replacement and in all your future endeavors.

Is pirate_kk still in the race? I haven't seen him around for a while now?

whom ever takes this over will need access to webspace etc wont they? or better yet how would the person who takes this over manage in your place Pieter? what exactly is expected for the post and what will they need to know?

I ask this as its not massively clear to me(like i dont have access to my own website/space etc, but dont know if thats an issue or not?) and maybe it would help others who do fulfill the criteria better make the choice to volunteer?

'Cause this is coming soon now <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
