Weathered Ships Mod fixed

Thanks Admiral. I've been out of space on that one for a long time. Been deleting as I go. Let's see if it works.

<img src="http://gallery.cybertarp.com/albums/userpics/24871/brig04.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

It works! And fast! Hoorah!!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Aye Awsome Screenies Rafe.despite the problem wid de MOW texture it still looks great <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Hey Rafe, I was wondering if ye 'ave some screenies 'o the second MOW there where the bugs don't show? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

EDIT: Ooops, my stupid, it's the one and same ship <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->So quite soon we'll have some more great skins, eh? That's absolutely great! Thank you

Just curious, is it posible to make that your new skins are added as new ships instead of overwriting original ones?, so ingame we would have available the original ships, plus extra ships with your skins. That would give more variety to the seas.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Hey guys that is what my whole mod is about! I've coded the skins so they do not overwrite the existing ships. They are their own ships. See the beginning of this thread!

Do you mean this one Admiral? I deleted that texture yesterday. I'd stick it back in the game and take one for you, but we're too late for that one. I keep a progression of the textures as I go along, but when I get about fifty of them in a folder I start getting rid of the old ones. No way I can live with that kind of distortion though. It's inherent in the model. I can barely stand the distortions in the one on this page. You'll see what I mean when it's released. It's the same model, but that black "strake" down the middle helps to mask some of the distortion. It breaks up the pattern a little bit too, and that helps some.

Everywhere Rico. Here's a picture of the model with no skin. I don't know, maybe it doesn't bother some people. Drives me to distraction. Can't stand it.

Edit:

Thought you said where is the distortion, instead of what is the distortion. This screenshot shows the cause of it. Gotta admire the Akella people who had to devise ways to camoflage the shortcomings of the models.

Almighty God forbid it! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

For the most part Rico, I try to preserve the wooden effect in the original texture. As for plugins, I don't know. I have Adobe Photoshop, but I only use it to open .DDS files and to merge a finished .BMP file as a layer over the original .DDS.

I do all of my work in an ancient Micrografx program that doesn't even recognize half of the formats out there. I'm not an artist by any means. I mean as in light years from it. These things are really difficult for me. They take hours, or days in some cases and are tedious in the extreme. I'm sure there are some real artists around here that find this much easier than I do who could give you some real guidance. (I rather suspect Catalina is one of those.) The only way I get by is with a lot of patience. The best advice I can give anyone is to experiment with the tools you have and stick to it until you have something close to what you want. I know that doesn't help, or answer your question, but I'm just not an artist Rico. I just have a lot of patience I guess.

Well hell, I already got a medal. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

What I'm trying to say Rico, is that if you're new at this, you're going to find it discouraging at times. When I was younger, I used to think that patience was a gift, but rather believe nowadys, that patience is an aquisition. If you're patient and persistent, you can do any of this, and if you really stick to a project, you just might get what you want. I'm happy to just get in the ball park.

I read the advice that Catalina gave you. I always read her advice. There really isn't any more to it than what she has already told you. At least not that I know of. No magic bullets. Just basics. Use your filters, clone brush, lasso, magic wand and anything else that looks interesting in whatever program that you end up using. Back things up and experiment. And one more time. Patience. When you've gotten to the point where you think you've done the best you can do, walk away from it for a day or two. It's surprising sometimes what you find, as it's easy to overlook things when you're too close to a project, and some time away from it gives you a new, or different perspective. One more time. Patience.

Cheers Bligh! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

As for the model of the MOW, I would guess that since the MOW was only to be used once in the game after Disney shat golden coins on Akella's bed, that they just let the model go as is. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Ive seen it in others Admiral. What's discouraging is to get half way finished with something before you notice it. Probably more to do with polygon count than anything else. Does make it easier on people with moderate systems, and allows for some fairly large battles. Ain't got nothing against bashing those who released this turkey half finished though, and truly despise Bethesda for not supporting us. Bash on brother 8Q.

Rafe, awesome stuff! Not an artist? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> Ptah! Artist indeed. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Regarding the model. Looks like the smoothing wasn't set correctly. In max, you'd just go and do a 20degree autosmooth to correct that; Maya though has `material-wide` smoothing I think.

But AFAIK (and it's not _that_ far), it's fixable. So don't throw anything out!! (Wow, a second exclamation point. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> ). It's not the model, just the smoothing.

You know...brb.

Yeah, smooth out those indented gunports and it, um, yeah...

Sorry, trying to seem smrt <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Seriously though if it can be done... nice!!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Um...after getting it into Max, you're quite right, it's edges, not a simple smoothing problem. Though going to 25degree smoothing helps.

Yeah, hafta probably go back and shuffle the vertices of durn near all those gunports to get the strips to look more flush. But beyond a certain point, yeah, only more polies will help.

Basically, not trying to have the entire darn hull smoothed with itself will help _some_, but won't get rid of everything (I'd say about half).

Hey Nathan, thanks, And thanks for trying to help. We'll work around it the best we can. One little tip for others who encounter the same problems; dark colors. Or ornate scribbling all over the place.

Sometimes it is best to just go away from the computer and clear your head - If I get too intensely into modding and when I have troubles I end up having dreams about working on this stuff. THAT is when I KNOW I need to "take a vacation", LOL!

Either that or when I wake up in the middle of the night after one of those dreams, I get up and work. Some of my best thinking goes on right about 4AM after a couple of hours of sleep. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
