Weathered Ships Mod (Updated!)

iamthejarha

Landlubber
This mod is an extension of MuddyMonkey77's original "Weathered Ships Mod," which installs Rafe Bligh's custom ship textures as new ships, rather than replacing the original ship textures. More or less, all I've done here is to include Rafe's latest ship textures in the mod, as well as creating POTC files for the POTC ModPatcher.

Credit, of course, goes in full to Rafe Bligh for his textures, and MuddyMonkey77 for his original work in creating the mod, without which this little update wouldn't even exist. I'd originally done this just for my own game, but Cat convinced me to share it with the PA! community. MuddyMonkey, if you have ANY problem at all with me releasing this mod (which includes your work), please let me know, and I'll have it removed ASAP. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Now, about the file. The archive contains the ship models and textures, and two POTC files--both files add the weathered ships to Ships_init.c, but one is designed for users who haven't updated the statistics for Cat's Xebec CT, while the other is for those who've already done so.

Assuming I link this correctly (heh), the file is available for download in the PA! ftp section, right here:

<a href="ftp://files%40piratesahoy%2Enet:piratesahoy@ftp.piratesahoy.net/`Upload-Download`%20Folder" target="_blank">ftp://files%40piratesahoy%2Enet:piratesah...wnload%20Folder</a>

The file to download is "Weathered Ships Mod (updated) 1.3" (see update). Enjoy, and let me know if you run across any problems, as this is my first real attempt at a mod/patch! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

<b>UPDATE (08/10/04):</b> At Kieron's request and Cat's helpful suggestion, the files in the `Upload-Download` folder have been updated. Now there are two versions, in EXE (`self-extracting` RAR) and ZIP formats, respectively. I've included a README file in both, and each is identical to the other, so there's no need to download it twice.

<b>UPDATE (08/15/04):</b> I've uploaded version 1.2 of the mod, and have deleted version 1.1 due to its problems. I'm fairly certain that I've fixed all the issues, but of course the only way to REALLY find out is to wait for someone to come up with a problem. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> The file is in .EXE (`self-extracting` RAR) format, so you don't need any specific archiving program to unpack it. Good luck, and let me know if anything screws up!

<b>UPDATE (08/20/04):</b> Version 1.3 is now uploaded. Among the changes is an added ship (the weathered fleut)--you can see the README for the other changes.

<b>UPDATE (09/04/04):</b> Uploaded an update (version 1.31), which fixes a problem with incorrect "refShip.All" properties. This update is <i>`code-only`</i>, and needs version 1.3 to function!

Sweet work! I do have a question about how it is installed though. I put the files in the respective folders but where does the potc update file go? and do I just run the build installer again only for the update?

Edit: Ahh I see now. I misunderstood. I thought this was adding the weathered ships textures as new ships to build 11.

So, this is a replacement texture file, not a `new-ships` file? And what're the chances that Jolly Roger I want to play could be updated to fit B11?

No, they're new ships not replacing old skins...

Okay, I wasn't entirely clear. The mod will only work with build 11, but to install the POTC file, you need the POTC Mod Patcher program. The mod patcher is available in the PA! Mods section, right here:

<a href="http://mods.piratesahoy.net/index.php?action=view&view=entry&entryid=22" target="_blank">Viper - POTC Mod Patch Utilities</a>

Hopefully that'll get you going. If you have any problems installing the mod, just let me know! If used correctly, the POTC Mod Patcher will automatically copy the ship textures as well as update the necessary files (Ships_init.c and common.ini) to properly add the new ships.

nb to use the mod patch utilities you need a visual basic runtime download. you might well already have it, but you might not lol <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> i can't remember where the download is, though <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":huh" border="0" alt="huh.gif" />

Yeah, you need the VB6 runtime files and a specific OCX file as well. The VB6 files are available straight from Microsoft at this address:

<a href="http://download.microsoft.com/download/vb60pro/install/6/Win98Me/`EN-US`/VBRun60.exe" target="_blank">http://download.microsoft.com/download/vb6...-US/VBRun60.exe</a>

The OCX file is available from Viper's site. It's an extremely slow download by my experience, but it's only a 100kb file, so it still doesn't take that long.

<a href="http://members.aol.com/Viper67857/`POTCUtils-SupportFiles`.rar" target="_blank">http://members.aol.com/Viper67857/POTCUtil...upportFiles.rar</a>

I already had the files from installing previous programs, which means you might, too. The best thing to do is try and run the program, and if it doesn't work, <i>then</i> download and install the VB6 and/or OCX files.

gràcies iamthejarha <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

<!--`QuoteBegin-muddymonkey77`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(muddymonkey77)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->As long as you give credit to Rafe and myself in the read me of your update I'm fine with it.[/quote]

Good point, I should update the file with a readme. Duh. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />: You and Rafe are credited everywhere else, though, including the info in the POTC file and the code itself, and right here in this thread, of course.

I have wanted to look at this for quite some time now but knew MM was working on it - it's good that the work is now done, as Rafe's ship skins are very nice and add good variety to the ships you encounter in the game...

WTG, iamthejarha, MM, and Rafe!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

oh, iamthejarha, i just `re-read` your first post... would it be too much trouble to ask for the zip version? it'd be a million times easier for me that way. thanks <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

you're right, .rar files are strangely common around here... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":huh" border="0" alt="huh.gif" /> can anyone recommend a .rar extractor?

Other than WinRAR (free for 40 days), I don't know if there's another program that reliably extracts RAR archives. I'll get the zip version up ASAP, though.

Yeah, they really are. I hadn't used MM's original mod until I installed build 11, and then I realized that Rafe's newest textures hadn't been added yet, so I set about doing it for my own game--didn't even think about releasing the additions until you said something, actually.

And last but not least, Thanks! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

If you post a .rar archive, make it `self-extracting`. That's what I do - then you don't need a special program to make it unwrap itself...

WinRAR is what I use.

That's a great idea, Cat. I've taken your advice and `re-uploaded` the RAR file as a `self-extracting` EXE. Also, just to be on the safe side, I uploaded a ZIP version, too. Now no one has an excuse not to try it! lol j/k

COOL! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> I got it but haven't had a chance to play with it yet, doing some computer maintenance that's been taking some time (shifting files, new hard drive &tc)... I'm very glad this is finished now, tho!

Have some rum! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I've installed but haven't had a chance to view the ships yet...

A few concerns after installing: It puts its own "models" and "textures" folders in the main directory branch, instead of putting those models/textures in their usual place. Is it meant to work this way or should I move those? It's where the ModPatcher unpacked them.

`In-game`, at the shipyard, the new ship pictures have no names. And this may be unrelated, but after trying to buy one and go to the port to view it, my game crashed upon reaching port.

The main directory branch? The models should each be in their own folders, all stored in RESOURCEMODELSSHIPS. The textures should be under RESOURCETEXTURESSHIPS, respectively. If the ship names aren't showing properly, look in RESOURCEINITEXTSENGLISHcommon.ini, and make sure this section exists:

;string = BlackPearl,"Ship of the Line" //added by verruckt
string = BlackPearl,"Black Pearl" // NK
string = Lineship,"Lineship" // NK
;string = Fearless,"Fearless" //added by Duke Surak'nar
string = Warship,"Warship" // NK
string = Xebec3,"Xebec BR" //Mod Ship by Duke Surak'nar 17/08/2003
string = XebecCT,"Xebec CT" //Mod Ships by CatalinaThePirate 01/03/2004
string = LuggerCT,"Lugger CT" //Mod Ships by CatalinaThePirate 01/03/2004
string = Lugger5_44,"Lugger MM"
string = Brig3_44,"Brig MM"
string = Frigate4_44,"Frigate MM"
string = Frigate5_44,"Frigate MM"
string = Corvette4_44,"Corvette MM"
string = Battleship3_44,"Battleship MM"
string = Lugger6_44,"Lugger MM"
string = Brig4_44,"Brig MM"
string = Corvette5_44,"Corvette MM"
string = Manowar3_44,"Manowar MM"
string = Schooner3_44,"Schooner MM"

If any ships beginning with "Lugger MM" don't exist, add them. That will solve the problem of `no-name` ships.

As for the models and textures copying into improper directories, I think I just found the problem. I'll try to have a fix for it up by tomorrow. In the meantime, the above should fix the problem.
