Which Game?

take care to follow my things not to do list! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> oh: good starting ships are the ketch, bermuda sloop, and lugger VML. the latter because it's, along with the new black pearl, one of the most detailed ships in the game. one thing you could do as well to make the game more fun to play is to configure the BuildSettings.c file in the main PotC directory. in the program folder, there is also Internalsettings that fine tunes several things, but could be usefull to configure as well.

here's what i did:
potc
bd12full
b13full
b13u2
b13u3
b13u3full
FAi fix

did i foget anything?

started game up and all seems to be working well. didn't get very far. bought a new spyglass and new sword.
how do you actually change build settings? what do i change it to? is this via the game, or do i have to go into files/folders?
thanks again,
iball

you need to dig into the files. it's very easy to find actually, when you know where to look. it's in the main PotC directory, in program files. luckily you didn't get very far yet, because you have to start a new game to make the changes work properly. don't change anything unless you know what it does.

you did follow the instructions that come with the build version, right? like running runme.bat after install, for instance.

runme.bat
i'm pretty sure i did. that's where the install goes into black screen and runs in DOS mode?
thanks,

yeah, something like that. so, did you find the file?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

been busy putting out fires this morning, haven't had a chance to look quite yet. i think it is loaded properly though. when i start the game, it displays the POTC screen with the build13 screen. last night i was:
killed in the tavern
fired on and sunk but the FdF fort and french ships in harbor
sunk at sea
raised the pirate flag while in harbor only to be sunk TWICE
love the game so far....
iball

thanks again for the guidance, this is only the 2nd time i have modded a game. Thus the basic questions.

oh: beware of enemy convoys on the high seas! none are so dangerous as those, as they don't take your ship and level into account. they're the larger prey for when you've aquired a big ship by coast raides. pirates on the open ocean are less dangerous, but they still come in large numbers.

found it!
lots of options,choices, etc.
thanks again for the guidance.
gonna see if i can sail into FdF with a hold full of rum......
another question.........everyone here keeps talking about quests.....how do i go about starting new quests? all i am dooing now is the basic game play.......
iball

well, talk to lots of people, in particular those in unusual places, and those who are standing still all the time, except guards of course. as for unusual places, after a while you will notice that people in taverns always sit in the same place. if someone is not, then it's likely a quest character. also: don't kill everyone. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" /> for some reason a lot of new players think that it's like runescape or vice-city and start killing everyone for fun or because they think they have to. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> an especially popular target seem to be the monks. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> try talking to one of them. believe me, it's funny. anyway, try asking for jobs in churches and shops. the governor can give you all kinds of quests, and one of them a special one. sometimes, there are also people in the governors mansion which you get a quest from as well. sometimes, people in one quest have something to do with another, or you can get a different quest from that person with a certain reputation. your reputation sometimes gives you certain options in a quest that you normally wouldn't have, and the same goes for your leadership skill. just keep trying different things, and you will keep discovering new stuff to do. even i haven't done everything yet because i always have a good reputation.

I wrote this a couple of days ago:

Morgan is right. Always try to install the most recent stable Build version, which is, at the moment Build 13 + Update 3 + LAi_fightparams.c fix file. You can install Build 14 Alpha 6 after that, which contains a lot more features. The Alpha does work reasonably well, but it does contain a bunch of known bugs. So I recommend you enjoy Build 13 Update 3 until you get bored with all the dozens of features in there and only then get the Alpha for a whole bunch of new features and quests.

......because i enjoy beating a dead horse into submission i ask: i did a re-install of POTC and build 13full last night and goofed up on the 13 updates. re-installed POTC and build 13full before going to bed. based on the above comments i will use update3 or update3full? when i extract the files, where do i extract them to? programfiles/bethesdasofworks/POTC? or do i need to go deeper? the LAi fix i extract right into the LAi file in POTC.
i know what you are saying to yourself. and yes, it's true. i am dumber than a box rocks when it comes tothis stuff. thanks to all for taking me by the hand and shepherding me through the modding process.

wait...did you actually re-install everything whe it worked properly and you had done everything the right way? anyway, what you have to do is simply put each folder in the same place as the folder with exactly that same name. for instance, the main directory contains the PROGRAM folder. if the update contains the PROGRAM folder you should place the PROGRAM folder that's in the update in the main directory and overwrite when asked. <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro--><b><u><i>DO NOT</u></b></i><!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> remove the old PROGRAM folder and then put the new one in afterwards.

after reading other post on here about the signage in the towns i was thinking that some changes were not made( i was only seein "tavern", "store", "shipworks").
so, i am now with a fresh 13full install complete, but with no updates attempted.
what do i do next? where do i extract the files to? i.e., what do you do, step by step?
thanks,

nevermind. you do know what to do, do you? othwise i'll try and summarise it again.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
pretty sure. i'm just doing them in order. potc, 13, u2, u3, FAi fix. unzipping into a temp file then moving folders on top of folders. where does the buildsettings H file go?i know it doesn't go in place of the C file. should i rightclick/drag on to OTC main folder?
thanks,
bc

files that are the same should always be placed over each other, thus in the same folder. the reason why you have to replace the buildsettings.c file is because new features have been added, so there are more toggles. you will have to edit the file agin to your liking after you overwrite it. i noticed that you didn't install build 12.1 first. this isn't nessesarily bad, but you might encounter certain bugs that you otherwise wouldn't have. although i'm not sure. i think that there already is a fix for every bug that is a result of not installing build 12.1 first, so you don't have to worry. of course, if you want to install it AGAIN, but then with build 12.1 first, that's your choice. it would probably take less time to add the small fixes than to re-install everything again though. unless you didn't install it yet of course. just see how it turns out.

EDIT: read the next post before changing anything please!

Actually Peter has been recommending Build 13 + update 3 + update patch.

Had some troubles with that configuration.
Ship Berthing was not working.

Suggest as otherwise posted in this thread . . .
Build 13 + update 2 and run its Runme file + update 3 and run its Runme file too + that nice micro patch for update 3.

Reply I wrote a couple of days ago:

To iballdriver: To install Build 13:
1) Build 12.1
2) Build 13 Full
3) Build 13 Update 3
4) Fix LAi_fightparams.c

The following files are NOT required: Build 13 Update 1 (old fix file), Build 13 Update 2 (old fix file), Build 13 Update 3 Full (only required if you install Pre Build 13 Base instead of Build 13 Full).

If you want to playtest Build 14 Alpha 6, simply install Build 14 Alpha 6 Full on top of your proper Build 13 installation.

To reader81: There are no seperate bug fixes for the game. All bugfixes are included in the Build mod, along with the new features. The new features really do improve the game though and I see no reason why anyone would want to play without them.
