Why is my pirate always in poor health by age 40?

I've read here about pirates that are retiring in their 50s or 60s, etc. How are you all doing that? My pirates all have retired in poor health before the age of 40, even though I have the medicine items. Is there some mod that I don't know about? Have you all discovered the fountain of youth? (I hope the answer is not that I need the medicine skill, because I don't think I can get along without the fencing skill...)

Could be de more sword hits ye take,quicker ye age mate,just a guess <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Right, you have to be better at blocking hits from anyone you duel, so as to keep yourself healthier. The less hits you take, the healthier you'll be. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Hmmm, Fred Bob be supposin' one could actually avoid duels until one had demselves de whole kit, eh? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Might actually live longer! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Aye, Skull, but thar be dat gunnery skill, ye knows, dat one could use tew hep git ships tew surrender widout havin' tew board. Perhaps de key tew avoidin' premature retirement be minimizin' yer duals AND larnin' tew BLOCK! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Here's my question. Does the game count how many times you're hit, or how many fights you're in? I go through most of my fights and never get hit, but still age way too fast. BUT, if I make most of the guys surrender in the `ship-to`-ship fights, I can play longer. Has anyone else seen a corelation here?

With my most recent pirate, I've been cutting down the number of times I get hit (using the pause key) pretty significantly, but I seem to be losing health at the same rate as I did in earlier games.

And if the number of times you get hit doesn't affect health, then what the heck are the leather vest and metal cuiriass doing in the game?

I have noticed that having a metal cuirass definitely effects your fighting abilities. Sometimes, getting hit by your opponent when you make a mistake doesn't put you one step back. In my experience this only happens when your opponent makes a thrush.

Getting hit makes you loose faster. Leather vest and metal help you to resist those thrusts. You do not get hit so much. You can smack him instead. He looses. You Plunder.

Ageing by being hit? I doubt that. Leather or Metal helps you live longer -> yes but indirectly, you do not end up in Jail as often.

Terrible health by 40? Too often. Maybe people did not last too long back then?

I think age is not the issue when being hit. Health is. Thats is what is meant. Getting hit affects your HEALTH, regardless of your age.

Notice that the original poster asks why he has poor health, not why he as aged. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

This I have tested and am completely sure of:
Health is direct function of aging. As you age, your health gets worse.

The theory that you when you get hit in sword fighting that you age quicker, I still haven't had a chance to test this.

Its true though, you could play a game where you never once get hit in swordplay and still have the same health level as someone who gets `sword-smacked` like its a habbit when at the same age, eg 40, 50, 60 etc.

Interesting topic on many a Pirates Forum

Usually found under Modern Myths.

Logic implies this is correct. Logic and programming do not always go together. What matters is how the program was written.

Anybody who has tried to live a life where their Pirate has not been skewered as often as before has found no change in their useful lifespan.

Could it be that what matters is the number of actual swordfights and not how many times you've been hit that reduces your health?

I tested this....
My pirate was 50 years old with failing health. I found in memory where his age was stored and just as an experiment changed his age back to 19 years. His health then showed as GOOD even though he has been stuck by the sword many times in battle. Changed his age back to 50 and his health was failing again.

HEALTH IS A DIRECT FUNCTION OF AGING, THE MORE YOU AGE THE MORE YOU HEALTH FAILS.

Actually, this experiment may support the theory that something other than age is also a factor: If only age was a factor, then changing your pirate back to 19 should have put him in "excellent health," (usually goes to "fine" and "good" in the 20s).
