Hopefully I won't be doing Russian-English translation; but I have and can convert relatively simple English into flowery phrases too complex for modern folk here to understand... because I love flowery English and speak that way...

I'll be starting on SoFS pretty much... immediately, and I'll probably want to keep a blog on that. This is my first time contributing to a commercial game project and is it just me or are Russians cute. They have a lovely sense of humor :3

EDIT:

Glad you like the little vid as much as I do :3

Apparently I have some recordings of HMS London as well - but I doubt at that stage I could actually fight the ship and record simultaneously.

For the video project I intend to do my own honour a favour and try to write a storyline in multiple episodes (because long slow soundtracks are boring). As fun as a 5 minute battle sequence is on Master and Commander drumbeat it's pretty typical fare on youtube and I hate the lack of drama therein...

Ok, I finally got around to doing some more editing, there is still just a couple of more things I want to add in the Pirate History section and I also still need to add a proper introduction for SWS's tutorial. I add the F.A.Q. for the Appendix, still need to add more to that and edit it some, so you might not want to put that in just yet. Also added a choose your own path section, needs some work though. Some of the text throughout the preface has been changed a bit, you may have to re-edit a bit SWS, sorry!

I have also attached a rough draft of an image file of the default key assignments, got some work to do on it still, so please feel free to critique it and give me some ideas! But it gives you an idea of what I was thinking. I haven't done much with the map yet, I will get started on that and work on putting the buidlinfo texts into a separate manual.

First of all, good work. While I'm busy with the Secrets of the Far Seas translations you might as well flesh out the content of the manual as far as possible, as I shall jump into scripting mods (namely ship stability) before the start of the New Year.

Oh, so there are hotkeys for personal weapons; I never knew that! All the more reason to get this show on the road, eh!

Worry not, my multitasking doesn't mean I will leave this project to rot - it will merely become more interesting :3

I have a complaint though - 24 hours ain't enough for the things I want to do!

Yep; weapon hotkeys I added for the Special Weapons, like the grenades and smoke pots and such.
Have a look at "buildinfo\Default Key Assignments.txt". ;)
Some comments on the key assignments:
- Loot corpse is now done with F3 and 'T' is no longer used for it
- You CAN actually use '4' to load bombs with realistic cannons off: you can steal bombs from the forts :cheeky

Thanks SWS, I'll have some free time at the end of this month, hopefully I can get things pretty finalized by then. Good luck with your Russian translation! I did a little work on the Russian CoAS manual when CoAS was first released, some people were saying that they were missing manuals with the game but we never had any real confirmation on that and translating was a real pain as I am not much of a linguist, so I pretty much gave up on that project.

Thanks Pieter! I'll update the texts and fix the file when I get the chance. I'll have to look into stealing bombs from the forts ...sounds like fun! xD:

But be careful, if you're boarding to accept surrender of an enemy captain then do NOT use F3 after you defeat him in a duel, because that will take you directly to the ship looting screen even if the quick icon shows the loot corpse option. So when boarding, use Enter to select the correct option or you miss out significant amounts of loot!

Good luck with your Russian translation!

Thank you, and I have some special tactics in store this winter :3

In my case I can translate easily but the sheer mass of words is going to be an issue. They have 12,000 words in ONE quest!

I have decided to suspend my commitment on the translation project indefinitely as I believe the social component of community labour is very important.

Consider me satisfied with the very professional dialogues I've been having with persons involved in New Horizons, and so I shall focus my primary effort herein.

Update will be posted tomorrow. After I finish that hours-long battle with the huge fast caravel...

Don't get your hopes up too high! I'm sailing a old, slow caravel (already damaged as shown in movie) against a huge, modern, fast one. If I get sunk the manual would likely not make it to the lifeboats!

Put it in a bottle and throw it overboard. It'll arrive somewhere eventually. :yes

The good news is that I did not get sunk, the bad news is that the manual still needs to get to Curacao where it can be handed over to the Dutch publishers. In the way were:

- A Spanish war galleon (taken as prize), off Havana <- this was that ginormous "Fast Caravel" in the movie!
- A Spanish Tartane (rammed and sunk), off Havana
- A Pirate Frigate (rammed and raided), off Jamaica
- A Pirate Brig (crippled in long range gunnery duel), Cayman Islands

and god knows what else

I updated the Default Key assignments in my post above, also added a PA logo. I am gonna try and get something done with the map this weekend, I won't have much time at all next weekend to do anything. So probably not much of an update on anything else for two weeks.

I'll see if I can polish up the preface a bit more after I get done with the map. I have started on the Build history texts PDF, but it's gonna take some time to get them all in order and formatted correctly, with maybe a little editing for spelling thrown in. I'll also see if I can get a good looking parchment background in there. I'm also going to add as much to the faq as I can find by scouring the forums.

Just wanted to let ya all know I am still hard at it! Oh yeah, plus I gotta find some time to work on my blog! :nk:modding

I'll look forward to your introduction to the walkthrough, as well as the rest of your contributions. It definitely sounds like we will have a manual close to 200 pages when done.

For ship recognition guide (that will not aim to be a comprehensive listing of the gazillion ships in NH) I have a very promising and unique idea to make that work.

Also, I have solved the major lag in openoffice when editing huge documents. Just upped the RAM usage from a very conservative default. I also have a lot of stuff to write about the complete features of Build 14, in shall we say, novelised language.

Consider today's effort a stock take, and I shall save the updates for when there is major progress.

Looks and sounds good, Thagarr! I have also returned,
so let me know if any specific help is required with the manual project.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by your last sentence, Snow White Sorrow... :?

I did some improvements to the Build Mod and Forum FAQ thread.
Personally I prefer it if such a thread has a little content as possible
so that only the important stuff remains, that people might actually READ.
That's why I'd suggest to try and put as much of that stuff into the Manual
so it can be removed from the thread.

I see the forum has been pruned, good work :3 I have saved today's forum listing to disk so I won't ever need to hunt for URLs as they disappear off page 1 of the forum.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by your last sentence

Can't fight a ship if we nae got word of our supplies, can we :3

No threads have been removed from the forum though.
And the ones I unstickied can still be found through links in the threads that remain pinned.
I just tried to clean up things a bit; it was a mess with about ten stickies, three of which FAQs.

To Thagarr and Snow White Sorrow: Have you seen these gameplay tips yet?
http://www.moddb.com/mods/new-horizons/news/build-14-alpha-10-available
If not, I reckon they ought to be incorporated into the Manual in one way or another. :yes

Thanks Pieter, I hadn't seen that yet, I will incorporate them when I get the chance. Hopefully when we get our Christmas break from work I will be able to finalize a lot of it.

I'm also planning on adding a section to the Build Mod History with basic modding tutorials. I ran across your conversation with Suraknar a couple of months back, and went through his links, there is some good stuff there! I sent him a PM asking his permission to use them, but haven't heard back from him yet. If I don't hear from him, I'll see if I can track him down over at the LIB.
