Age of Pirates Gameplay Movie

The game looks very nice <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

It would be more exciting, I think, to have had the ships completely dark during a night battle. That way, you'd have to watch for the cannon fire to see where the enemy is... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Lighting your ship in those days would only blind your night vision and give the enemy a perfect target. I have seen galleons of the 1600s with large lanterns on their stern, but Im sure that was only to make sail managing easier at night.

To be precise, the way ship were lightened back then would even blind a modern man´s night vision <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> - well as a matter of fact, <i>every</i> kind of lighting blinds night vision, even lighting a cigarette. I learned that much in my -compulsory - army time.

I suppose the lights were used because a) the helm is at the stern and b) to avoid collisions at night.

I get the sound but no video.

I've tried it in winamp, quicktime, and realplayer, and mediaplayer. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

I suspect he lives in a country where military service is compulsory. I've done my time in the army greys... Uh, several countries in Europe, for example. Most of them aren't rich enough to keep up a standing army, so they train all their menfolk in the arts of turning left and right and standing in straight lines and marching without stepping on each other...

Oh, yeah, I can also dismantle and assemble a RK 95 assault rifle (the weapon of choice in the Finnish military) blindfolded in less than a minute... (well, I could at the time, more than 10 years ago...)

Of course, you can nowadays choose to do civilian service instead of the regular millitary, but then you end up wasting twice the time at worst (regular service is 6-12 months, whereas civilian service is something like 13 months).

Does it count if your good at SW battlefront? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> All,

I agree any light except <b><u>red</u></b> light spoils night vision, but can be improved by loking approx 10 to 15 degrees of the desired line of sight. This is due to the Eye's structure. During the day the eye uses rods to sense the light around us to make up a picture. At night it uses Cones to produce our vision. The cones produce a chemical called liquid purple to enhance night vision and make the eyes more sensitive to the lower light levels. As the cones have a angled side the vision is more acute slightly off line.

I served 13 years in the British armed forces out of Hereford, so I have a lot of experience with night operations.

As for the ship lighting they have used in AOP it is indeed incorrect.

The ships did have exterior lighting on the stern weather rail and in the Cabin, for navigation lighting, as do ships and aircraft today. These wouldn't have affected the lookouts night vision, as they were stationed in the fighting tops of all 3 masts an average of 100 foot or so in the air. They were up there to look over the curvature of the Horizon and so see further.

No lighting was ever put on the spars as the sails were far too combustable. In fleet actions different combinations of colour and numbers utilising Safety lanterns. These were used for fleet and Squadron and group identification during fleet or squadron actions. These were placed on a mast never above the head sail spar height (middle sail on a three tier square rig and 2nd on a 4 tier, to a land lubber) and always manned for safety. they also acted as a primitive FOF system, as target identification was extremely difficult at night, especially when the moon was in.

Otherwise it looks incredibly good. I hope they got the cannons ratings correct this time. The only ships rated for 24 lb guns were heavy frigates and line ships and then only on the middle and lower gundecks for line ships and bottom decks for the heavy frigates. Man of Wars were the only ships rated for 32 lb guns. And then only on the lower deck. The midlle and upper decks weren't srtong enough to take them and they were too heavy to ballance the ship when she heels over, either to the wind or whilst firing. the only exception was French Frigates that some times carried 18lb guns. All carronades carried long 9 lb guns for corvettes and below and 12lbs for Frigates and above. The gunsmoke in POTC is incorrect also. it would keep pace with the ship or drift forward. This is due to the wind speed always being greater than the ship speed whilst she is under sail, so the breeze would blow the smoke forra'd not rearwards. Also the crew didn't always jettison the cartriges during a fire drill. Every gun had 2 buckets of water and sand next to them whilst at quarters. Also there were sand and water posts at the masts on all decks during any action. It was one of the drills for Beating to quaters as was sanding the decks. On another technicality the decks weren't brown, at least not in the British Navy, they were always white due to the stone washing twice daily. The only exception to this was the Surgeons deck which was red for obvious reasons.

You may ask how does he know so much? I belong to the HMS Victory Preservation Society. She was the first True Man of War, (all previous tree deckers were rated Battle ships), produced in the world, and she is still in excellent condition. We run drills for fun on open weekends for the Public from time to time and I can tell you it is very hard work. I also sailed on HMS Ralaegh, a 3 masted Schooner and she still runs historic lighting and rigging.

Changing sail in a force three isn't much fun either, It's terrifying.

All that said, POTC is a fairly good representation of sailing at taht time with the mod patch on. I hope AOP improves on that. it would be good to put area damage on, one of the deadliest actions was to rake the stern and take out the rudder, in POTC this knid of damage model doesn't exist, aslo the ships still seem to sail when the crew drops below minimum, this is also unrealistic, the ship wouldn't be manageable, without a minimum crew, they wouldn't be able to run thesails or the guns.

Just a thought.

Because I´m from Germany, here, army service is still compulsary. And even if nowadays the service only lasts about eight months (I had to do ten) and not quite everybody is drafted any longer, because so many aren´t needed, our politicians are reluctant to swith to a standing army <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Well, I don´t complain, after all, it was sort of fun.

I couldnt do the army. Maybe a commando, but if I was to do anything like that, Id be more of a James Bond sorta character.

(Whups, I meant MI6 Stealth kinda thing. Not an invincible hero who can foil a load of random baddie plots)
