Ahoy!

Crispy, ship boarding does take a lot of practice right out of the gate, don't give up! You need to have some experience points in Boarding and Attack and hire yourself a good Boatswain and a couple of fighters to protect your back. Don't take on the big boys till you get a LOT more experience. Start with small merchant vessels and build up experience. Load your cannon with chain shot or knipples, and rake the hell out of their sails, that will slow them down and make it easier to catch them. Sail up and approach your prey from behind avoiding their broadsides until you are right on top of them and ready to board, sail along side and wait for the boarding icon (Grappling Hook) to appear then press F2 I believe it is to board. At lower levels though, they will probably board you before you get the chance. Good hunting mate, hope that helps.

The button's F3 by default. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Yup, thanks for correction mate! Obliviously I have been working to hard and not playing near enough lately! <img src="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//style_emoticons/default/user_comment.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I'm finding the game more frustrating that fun. That's probably because I don't understand very well what's going on. Are there any guides I can read about playing this game?

You're talking about PotC? If you have the Build mod installed, you can find documentation in the <i>buildinfo</i> subfolder.
The ReadMe files are especially interesting, most notably the Build 11 one for the basics. What exactly is frustrating you?
BTW: Do you have the original game's manual somewhere?

Crispy, if your really stumped, check out the POTC forum. There is a complete walkthrough of the original game there. I would suggest that you don't read the whole thing at once and just read the section your currently having trouble with and see if you can work your way past it. What parts are you having the most trouble with? Most of us old timers here had a LOT of experience playing Sea Dogs, the predecessor to POTC. That really helped because a lot of the strategy's and controls are very similar between the two games.

Then there's other people who now <i>appear</i> to be old-timers, but joined only a couple of years after the game's original release.
Eg. me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

I'm stuck at the part where you have to destroy the ammunition ship. I'll try reading the documentation. Apparently build mod killed the save...Oh well... Well just have to start over. Should I have started playing Seadogs or POTC?

If you're playing the Build mod, there is something to be said for installing it on PotC and not Sea Dogs. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" />
As for the ammo ship: I think I heard other people with a similar problem. We need to get that standard main quest fixed up.

POTC is fine to start with, as much as I hate to admit it, there are some things that POTC does better. It's a good game that should have been much better! With the Build Mod, POTC is a fantastic game! But Sea Dogs in my opinion was a much better game originally. But I am just a bit biased! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> The graphics are dated now, but it's still very playable. Just be sure to also get the 1.06 patch if you do decide to give it a try, it fixes a lot of bugs in the original game. Hosehead developed a fantastic addon for Sea Dogs that adds quite a bit to the game. I was never able to get Sea Dogs to run on Vista, but it will run on XP.

Why is it that for all the efforts to try and make another good pirate game, the original Sea Dogs remains the best?
Excluding any subsequent modding, that is.

Kind of hard to put in to words Pieter, it just always felt more "authentic" then anything I have played since. It had good music, fairly easy to master keyboard controls, and The Spanish Treasure Fleet! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

The artwork was also a lot less polished, I think that helped give it more of a 17'th century feel. It also had the advantage of being the first 3D pirate game, I guess that kind of set it as the benchmark. What we need is a game that combines all the best from the original Pirates!, Sea Dogs, POTC and AOP, and maybe even a little bit of Monkey Island and Port Royal thrown in for good measure!

That does sound pretty good. You might want to hold on to those thoughts; there's a good chance we'll need them soon.

Holy... he installed it for Sea Dogs? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" />

I sincerely doubt that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

This map, available from my site, contains all islands in Build 13; the three Build 14 Alpha 9 ones are not there.
Stock game islands also still have their original names, unlike in Build 14 Alpha 9.

Thanks a lot! I'll fire up the game and the escort mission another try.
Is there any way to view this in-game? Alt tabbing seems to break the game.

Alt-Tab is a real pain in the ass, thank Microsoft for that! Your better off printing yourself out a copy crispy, so you don't have to try and switch back and forth.
