Another name for Corsairs: City of Abandoned Ships

Ah; nice names there! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Personally I do like "Corsairs: City of Abandoned Ships". Only "Corsairs" usually refers to Middle-Eastern pirates, not Caribbean ones. I think "Privateers: City of Abandoned Ships" or "Sea Wolves: City of Abandoned Ships" might be pretty good ones. I think the subtitle should be be retained because the game is based on the book "Island of Lost Ships" by Russian writer Alexander Beljaev.

Pieter, Corsair is a generic term for privateer - I don't think it refers to any perticular place in the World. At least French corsairs did sail to the Carribean very often.

I personnaly like 'City of Abandonned Ships' as a subtitle. I think it shouldn't be left apart, it sounds original.
However I don't like titles with ':' in it.

Could we have some more infos about the game? That would help for chosing a name...
For exemple, apart from the huge ships graveyard and the so-called Tenochtitlan (nothing to do with the main city of Nueva Espana, aparently... From an historical point of view it hurts a lot...), what special places can the player visit?
Are those special places like lost Indian cities just some sidequests, the game being mostly Seadogs-like sailing and fighting at sea (in which case it could deserve some 'Corsairs' in its name)?
How many main quests there are?
How developped is the economical system?
In what time does it take place?
One of the playable character seems to be Spanish - what other character can the player choose?

But just "City of Abandoned Ships" could work just as well. Of course there's also the matter of sales involved. Would you be interested in buying a game called "City of Abandoned Ships" if you knew nothing about it beforehand?

It's pretty interesting and contains most information that we have on the game.

From your research, I'd advise you to check the sixth link, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corsair" target="_blank">this one</a>... (and yes, I had already read the article)

'Mediterranean' is indeed more correct than 'Middle-Eastern', talking of the barbarian pirates - most of them are coming from the barbarian coast, that's to say North Africa. Alger was famous at those times.

Now that I know the meaning behind it I find it an engaging title, and before I knew the meaning, I found I was curious about it. That should be a good sign.

Would you be interested in buying a game called "City of Abandoned Ships" if you knew nothing about it beforehand?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->This is my biggest concern with it as well. I like it because it's not, again as I mentioned before, generic sounding like almost everything else I've heard recommended. All the others could be applied to nearly any pirate game and aren't in any way focused on THIS game. However, I too wonder if it is a good name for sales. Let's face it, those of us who frequent PA! (I hardly ever post but I've been visiting for a long, long time) are pretty darn likely to buy it even if it's called "Cap'n Yarr and his Scurvy Seamen!" The name that will draw the non-pirate-game-enthusiast that is probably the one they should pick. And we aren't really representative of that crowd. It is in our best interests, third only behind Akella and the publisher, that the game sell well.

That said, I hate catering to the masses and decision-by-focus group. Beyond this place there be mediocrity.

(and yes, I had already read the article)<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->I personally think that corsairs can indeed be used as alternate name for pirates; but there is at least some regional influence involved. A Bucanneer is not the same as a Corsair and a Privateer is not the same as a Pirate. But to the general public, these words all have pretty much the same meaning, so it doesn't really matter that much. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

<!--quoteo(post=244488:date=Mar 13 2008, 12:36 AM:name=MarquessGreg)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (MarquessGreg @ Mar 13 2008, 12:36 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=244488"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->However, I too wonder if it is a good name for sales. Good point. Indeed that name probably wouldn't get very good sales. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
On the other hand, doing something <i>unexpected</i> might work better than naming the game "Age of Pirates II" or something like that. I wonder if perhaps the general public isn't fed up with generic crap? Perhaps just "City of Abandoned Ships" along with some interesting-looking cover-art indeed COULD yield good sales, especially if the game description on the back cover also sounds interesting. Of course the game must then also be GOOD and get good reviews in gaming magazines and such.

Well I'm a guy who IS going to get this game EVEN if the name is "Scalywags: The Wenching Tavern"
or whatever. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I like the name City of Abandoned Ships as well, but I know if I were to see this in a store, I'd automatically assume it's an adventure game (not exactly sure why) - and the segment of people who play adventure games looks like it's rapidly dwindling, ergo less people who'll even take a look at it.

I too will buy the game regardless of the name, but then again, I'm only one buyer. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hope there is actualy a Pirate Nation in this game with Pirate type quests. One thing I really enjoy about POTBS is you can sail with other Pirates, you can do port battles against other nations, of course thats PVP, but lots of fun <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I found a trailer for COAS at this adress!

<a href="http://tav.fzz.ru/2007/12/10/korsary-gorod-poterjannykh-korablejj.html" target="_blank">http://tav.fzz.ru/2007/12/10/korsary-gorod...-korablejj.html</a>

We can notably see the new ability to dive under the sea, and our good ol' friend, arabella trader <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

That trailer looks really good to me. I think this game'll be at least pretty good.

We need to send seaward.ru another e-mail. What will we tell them about our brainstorming on alternate names for the game? I personally think "Sea Wolves: City of Abandoned Ships" is quite a good option.

After playing Silent Hunter Three for a few years , "Sea Wolves" instantly brings to mind "Uboats". <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

damski.

Hmm. U-Boats are indeed not really appropriate. Sea Hawks sounds interesting, considering the main character of PotC is called Nathaniel Hawk.
