Build 14 Alpha 6 Bug Summary

Well, there is a fourth category of objects: animals, like the sharks that have their swimming animation.

Though I also think it would be very difficult to implement a completely new type of creature, complete with fighting AI and animations. And it is the IMPLEMENTATION that is usually the biggest problem. I have seen too many ambitious people create beautiful ideas or models which in the end never made it into the game.

So, Heretik, I second Pieter's advice: start small and simple, and if the simple thing works let it evolve into something better.

What MIGHT work is

Step1
Take the shark model and remodel it into a kraken

Step2
Find the shark animation and make it kraken-like (slowing it down may already do the trick)

Step3
Find the shark AI and add a code that applies damage to your ship if you are close to the beast, together with some crunching sounds.

That would create the impression that the sea monster attacks your hull below the waterline, and the challenge would simply be to escape the beast.

Not the great feature that you might have in mind, but for a first step already difficult enough.

What ever you do, much success <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

so it would be indefeatable? well, that's not nessesarily bad. it makes sense. the point is: how fast should it be? not faster than 15 knots, that's for sure, as some ships should be able to escape from it. and how big should the chance be that you encounter it? or should you only encounter it in the main quest? if you only encounter it in the main quest, it should be faster than the black pearl, and a warning in the file for the stats for the black pearl should be typed in so the player wouldn't make the black pearl too fast so it would outrun the kraken and thus kill the main quest.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Mates,

I found two bugs with B14A7 that are quite annoying:

1) Pirates captain of Pirate Mission quest (take from Governor) are always named "Deadly Pirate".
And if I accept a new Pirate Mission when I have already a "Deadly Pirate" as prisoner then he is replaced by an empty slot in passengers interface.

2) If I swap my ship with another of my fleet then the ship's sail are showes full repaired even if are completly destroy and it's impossible repaired it.

3) Some CTD after surrend captain dialog if I choose to take enemy captain in my crew.

Are there any fix for that bugs?

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> bye, bye,
giuliootto

i've seen that hull bug. but i've always seen it with my sails. if you get hit, the damage is properly registered again.

Good point about the animals, CCC! I forgot about those! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />
Would it be possible to add that damage code into the AI? For all I know, the animals don't influence the game at all. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

To Giuliootto: The "Deadly Pirate" name is supposed to be overwritten. Apparently some code isn't executed (properly). If only we had somebody to fix it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

what about making a group of seperate tentacles? they would have to stick together somehow though.

Greetings,

I think I found two bugs in 14-6

1.) When I use objects to boost my attributes, e.g. the lucky ring, my attributes sometimes are reduced. Some items seem to work properly, the compass for example, some don't, like mentioned ring or the book about ship defense. Maybe this is intentional somehow, so any clearifying would be greatly appreciated.

2.) Concerns boarding - again this might be intentional. When I close in on a ship to get into boarding positions, sometimes when I get to close, boarding is initiated automatically - so far that's fine with me. But in that case I always find myself on this huge - and I mean huge - main deck, fightin' myself through sheer legions of opponents, all with a lot of hitpoints. The size of the deck is in no correlation to the class of the ship I attempted to board. Then again, when I manage to get the boarding icon in the upper left corner and initiate it manually via F3, everythings seems fine, realistic deck, manageable amounts of crew, etc. Any ideas?

I have to say that I really like the mod so far, it is stable, I haven't had a single ctd, or any problem - except those mentioned.
Installation order: Build 12.1 -> Pre 13 -> Build 13 Update 3 full -> B. 14.6 -> 14.6 additional

1) Some object decrease your skills, yes. You'll have to be carefull of which objects you take and which ones you don't. It is usually not very obvious which items decrease your skills, so you'll have to find out somehow by noticing the effect. The lucky ring, however, IS supposed to be lucky. The ship defense book is a bit of a bad book and decreases your boarding skill. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

2) When the boarding automatically starts, it is the enemy who boarded YOU. This means you would end up fighting on your own ship's deck. When the enemy decided to board you, it is probably a strong enemy, which explains the strong enemies you get to fight. This doesn't really sound like a bug, but I'm not sure. It might somehow be wrong after all.

Your installation order seems fine to me. You might want to install my <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/pietersmods/others/pb_modifications.zip" target="_blank">latest modding</a> on top of your current installation to get some more fixes and new modifications. See the included ReadMe for a changelist. New game IS required.

Thx a lot for the quick answer, Pieter and thx for the add-on.

So I thought, but it definitely decreses my luck.

I had a good laugh on these books. I found a combination of items which actually increased my luck quite a bit, but found the whole initial matter rather worsend by that 'solution' (I don't want to spoil anything here, I think you know what I mean...).

Yes, I thought so, but the vessel in question here is the 'Oiseau' which hardly was any stronger than my bermuda sloop, and the high level of the french marines and the fact, that my ship had no huge deck either wouldn't be explained that way.

Say, do you see any way to incorporate the AoP officer system in the game? That is pretty much the only advantage AoP has over PotC imho.

yes, i love those books. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> did you know that most of them (with names mentioned) are based on forum members?

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

OK, I checked all the items one by one and you were right, the lucky ring is lucky. So no bug here... :]

@ Morgan: Yes, I noticed. Is it by pure chance that those give you the most bonus?

Our Morgan is known for his generosity! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> Which is only superseded by his boarding ability!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

That generosity-thing is a rather uncommon feature for a pirate, isn't it?

Is anyone else experiencing an attribute-stagnation with the new skill system? My melee skill hasn't changed in ages. All the others do more or less frequently, melee remains at 2 and 17% - and yes, I DO use it, I pretty much wreaked havoc among the caribbean shipping lanes.

nononono, i am best at shooting off masts! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> that's why there are two books about it. anyway, i have seen that wierd effect of your skills not increasing. but it was slightly different in my case. with me, i wouldn't go up a level if i wouldn't cause a day to pass by selling and buying goods. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> although i'm still not sure if that was it. it did have something to do with it anyway. did you see messages of your skill increasing in the top left? or did you see the messages and didn't your skill increase in the character menu?

heh. come to think of it, my boarding ability is indeed better!

Neither! The skill in the character screen does not increase. It used to go up every two, three won sword fights, including notifying via message. But now the value does not increase at all, not the 'level' and not the percentage value.

did you change any of the settings? i'm starting to think something somehow broke. if you would be able to point out the point where it broke, it could be very usefull.

<!--quoteo(post=187248:date=Apr 2 2007, 03:56 AM:name=morgan terror)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(morgan terror @ Apr 2 2007, 03:56 AM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->did you change any of the settings? i'm starting to think something somehow broke. if you would be able to point out the point where it broke, it could be very usefull.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
No, no changes in the settings. I'm also not sure that the melee skill is the only one affected, but here it is most apparent, due to the high number of duels. My repair skill has not changed for a while, too - and I don't have any officers in my party with a higher skill, who would do the repairing. I also can't remember of noticing any increase of my luck, sailing, leadership or precision skill.

well, repair skill doesn't really increase that fast. but sailing does in storms. i really don't know what's going on here, but the only modding experience i have is with re-writing some small texts and with music.

First off - I found a bug... I am not sure what is causing it though - because I had no problems with it before. For some reason, every time I am at sea, and I hit TAB to go to 1rd person, the game crashes.... It's happened the last three times I've been on - if I stick to 3rd person I'm fine. weird huh?

Second of all - hahahaha I particularily liked that the books involved the names of the people on the forums - it added a sense of depth to me. Also I loved the complaining miner on ... I can't remember if it was Guadeloupe, or Antigua that had couchcaptain Charles's invitation to the modding community hahahahaha. Interesting that the defense book decreases your defense - hahaha - I paid money for that one <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> You guys make me wish I could change my forum screenname to something more piratey <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Third- I'm so sorry - I totally forgot that I posted earlier in this thread. We'll see what I can do with Davy before I do anything else... my optimism still hasn't quite died yet...

I figured out what the problem was. I got a Pirate Design Cutter. I can't remember the exact specs, but I know that it is slower than the one I'm using now which has the stats:

speed: 18.5
Rotation: 7.5

they are both level 6 ships. I have no problems with the ship I have now - which leads me to believe that there was probably some problem in the scripting of that ship where it calls up the 1st person part. I don't actually know what I'm talking about, so I'll leave the theories to the pros. but I can sail again <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> Horay!
