CCC's SWAK & Stormy Start mod

BUt first of all.......the soldiers must have MUSKETS <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Wasn't it you who was making muskets, Vassal? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Yeah right <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> .....long time ago <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> .....lost all files <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> ....

Muskets and Partisans (yes, back then they were in use, as bayonets weren´t invented even in 1690, which is when the modded PotC plays, and certainly not in 1630, when the unmodded game is supposed to happen).

The Socket Bayonet
The socket bayonet first appears in the ranks of the French army in the 1670’s and afterwards came into general use throughout Europe. The standard form of the socket bayonet comprised a short steel tube `3-4` inches long fitting over the barrel of the musket on to which was welded a steel blade. The socket is then locked on to the muzzle by means of a "`zig-zag`" slot which engages with the foresight stud. This innovation would now allow the musket to be fired and reloaded without removing the bayonet.

I just found some stormy start bugs:
- The stormy start quest is marked finished immediately when you started it.
- The street merchants only want to sell you the default stock they try to sell when you first talk to them on Oxbay during the tutorial. However, after talking to them once, they don't get new stock. Nor do the other merchants.
- I don't know if this is a bug: I was set to "war" with Spain and ended up at Isla Muelle and the shopkeeper refused talking to me and warned he'd call the guards. That has never happened to me before.

<!--`QuoteBegin-Pieter` Boelen+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Pieter Boelen)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I just found some stormy start bugs:
Yes, I noticed these too. That merchant thing is a problem but it goes away after you visit them again (another day).

<!--`QuoteBegin-Pieter` Boelen+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Pieter Boelen)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->- I don't know if this is a bug: I was set to "war" with Spain and ended up at Isla Muelle and the shopkeeper refused talking to me and warned he'd call the guards. That has never happened to me before.
I had that same thing happen to me with this game I'm playing now, only it was on Conceicao. Made things a bit dicey there for a while, but I managed to squeak out of it. My ship was at 2% hull and sinking! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

As I was on the shore I walked into town and tried talking to the merchant and the shipwright but to no avail. So I had to try going back out to my ship and boarding her to try to sail away.

Because of the high hull damage, we sunk and I ended up with the tartane - so I took the tartane out and found and boarded a pirate and took his ship! It was "only" a barque, but it got me started. I sailed to IM and sold nearly everything on board and hired on an officer, then asked for ALL (i.e., larger) ship sightings, then went out and promptly jumped another pirate who had a Brig! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

So it is possible to make it out of that situation, Pieter. It's just a matter of figuring out how to make your predicament work for you! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> I liked the challenge of trying to board that barque with the tartane. That little boat handles like it has NO steering whatsoever! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" /> (Too) Fast, and (too) wide a turning arc. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

One thing I do which might be considered a "cheat", tho... But it depends upon how you look at it - I set up my BuildSettings.h so that I start the game at level 4. It is ONLY what I end up doing anyhow if I run through the tutorial with Malcolm, as I always practice fence with him until I hit level four, before I exit the ship. I set it that way because I got tired of doing the practice fencing with him and just wanted to "get on with it"... It makes a difference to have some ability and skill points to distribute...

Since there are eight skill points at level 4, I put one each on Leadership and Sailing, and three each on Melee and Luck. That puts me (respectively) at 2, 4, 2, and in luck, 4.

I changed the ship from the regular lugger to the Lugger CT because I like that skin... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> I leave the money the same... But I do this one small "cheat" with the level because I'd do it manually if I was doing the tutorial, anyhow... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

Yep, that tartane rocks. I used to always get the gunboat first, to get some extra money by selling off my dumb ol' Victory, but now it's the tartane all the way. I just wish I'd stop encountering pirates piled into them.

Not really a related thought, but... why will a ship board YOU (I assume that's what's happening when I don't initiate the boarding myself) and then immediately surrender? Like he's in such a hurry to bow before my might...

Also. It seems that I don't take a rep hit when I kill a boarded captain immediately, but I do when I capture and then kill him.

It would seem that this depends on your reputation. If it is high enough (I think "dashing" or "hero"), anyone will trade with you. But below, merchants of countries you´re at war with won´t trade with you. But however high your reputation might be, you never get trade missions from merchants of hostile countries.

1. Actually this is no quest, there is no winningcondition or goal. It is just a mod that changes your startingconditions. What you do after that is entirely up to you.
The questmessage is only there to explain your situation.

2. I'll check that, thanks <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

3. That's a feature of FAIK NK's RM mod: Traders and shipwrights of hostile nations may refuse to deal with you.

BTW: I did about the same as you with your Tartane. Only I bought a gunboat first and <i>then</i> boarded a Barque. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I didn't know. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" />

ok, I have a problem here. When I try to do the stormy start the vid plays then Im locked in me cabin. Any ideas as to why its doing that? And Malcom disappears...

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Stupid tartane explodes as soon as you nudge any other ship, tho... and no matter what ship you board with it, you hafta fight through like a bazillion decks, mostly repetitions of the cargo hold.

I got the bug someone else mentioned where the game hangs (or else I was a little impatient, but I gave it almost five minutes to sort itself out) when I try to get a job transporting cargo for a shopkeep.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> Yeah, I boarded a Barque that had eight decks! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

Yes, my game hangs when asking the merchant for a job, too. Don't know why... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Would it be possible to exclude khael roa or devil's island from the possible start points after the storm?
Because if you land there, there is no way off (at least I dont know of one, my ship gets stuck trying to get past the rocks).

That can be done, yes. Open up the both_reaction.c file in the PROGRAMQUESTS folder. Search for the line with comment "// executes one of the "case" sections below at random". Change "switch(rand(11) )" into "switch(rand(10) )", remove the entire "case 5" code and rename "case 6" to "case 11" into "case 5" to "case 10". Hope that works.

Sailing past the rocks on KR is tough, a real challenge. You have to be very careful with your speeds and round the turns with your sails down so that you don't end up on the rocks. Nice challenge... It's tough if you only have 2% hull, because then you sink, but you get the tartane so you can at least sail somewhere else... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Bah, that's nothing compared to "Devil's Throat" at Redmond... most ships won't even fit past those rocks. They catch, even when by all appearances you have enough room... but there's no damage at all. The game designers probably had much more leeshore damage intended, especially since one of the special abilities is supposed to reduce damage by reefs.

---

A thought I had, and this is as good a place as any to mention it: When you lose a mast, is it repaired out of your sailcloth or planks? Either way, that can't be right... masts should be replaced out of a goods item of spare masts, which would be anothe realistic concern to work into the game since we don't have water or gunpowder. It would also, realistically, take you a bit longer to reach some island if you've been demasted.

Interesting thought, about those mast repairs, Alan... I think you should be able to "limp" to a nearby beach to complete those repairs before sailing into port. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
