Crashing, dissapearing: guide me through please

the_salty_paul

Landlubber
Ahoy thar,

I bought this game for my dad a while back. He's yet to play long enough to encode the controls into long-term memory but he's trying again. He's yet to get out of Oxbay!: maybe he just likes Keira Knightley's voice <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Every now and then the game crashes (quite often tbh), especially the transitions between land/map/sea.

I was wondering if anyone could be so awesomely kind as to give me a bit of personally catered guidance as to how to stop the game crashing, progressive like? - I'm no wizz, so finding out how to find out the graphics card etc may be needed also <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> .

Thank you in advance,

paul.
the ready salted.

The first question that needs to be answered: Do you play the game with or without additional modifications? The original game is known to be rather buggy; it's much better <i>with</i> the mods. Not to mention the mods add a lot of gameplay, ships, characters, quests, etc. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Read: Open <i>PROGRAM\WorldMap\worldmap.c</i> and set <i>#define MAPSPEED 1.0</i> at the top of the file. This only needs to be done in Build 13 and up.

Indeed I do. I corrected it now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Thank you kindly for the quick responses! What a great and friendly site.

I mean rrrr *piratey nod*

Hi Peter, I'm using the stock version of the game. Aside from my IT incompetence, I think too many options may result in my dad moistening his longjohns. If you think it will help stop the game crashing then I'll give it a go. - There are lots of things I'm unsure about, though; like whether I need to reinstall the game etc (yes, I am that rubbish).

rrr, that's the stuff. I remember reading some advice but I couldn't find the graphics card information it was referring to. Any links that I can ask questions about here? Thank you Morgan.

My girly IT competence has resulted in me having a little accident; I have severely attenuated the structural integrity of my newly turned, yet to be sealed peg leg.

(I think that was OK actually. This is with the mod, though, presumably?)

A couple of unrelated questions:

If I delete the video files; will this upset the game?

What's the key to get out of a ship battle/storm? (I'm a lily livered nube <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> )

Thank you all, again!

paul.

storms:

ride them out, strike all sail.

battles: get to a sufficient range to go to the worlmap. (look for the icon)

This is what I read before and I think this applies to me:

<!--quoteo(post=102:date=Nov 26 2003, 11:57 AM:name=Keith)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Keith @ Nov 26 2003, 11:57 AM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><b>2) I'm having the game crash lots with a Radeon Card..
</b><i>Well there are 2 ways to help this;
1. change the AGP speed to x4 and turn fast writing off ( through the smart gear tab in advanced display properties in windows )
2. From Radeon9700: For all you Radeon owners if the game crashes here is a 80% sure way that the crashes will be much little or maybe even removed:

a.Download drivers for your video card at this site <a href="http://www.omegacorner.com/index_ati.html" target="_blank">http://www.omegacorner.com/index_ati.html</a>

b.Install the drivers and reinstall PotC just to be sure that there aren't any left bug with the other drivers(the old ones)

After that the game should run better and the crashes will probably be history.</i><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I remember not being able to find the place to change the AGP speed and not being able to download the drivers.

I'm sure there was a key you could press that took you right back to the warm cozyness of the map when a storm/battle loading screen appeared. Hmm, must be scurvy.

Getting out of a storm: You just need to wait a while. You can lower your sails; that would decrease sail damage. Another trick: When you see a storm approaching: Press Spacebar to go to 3D sailing mode before the storm icon appears, then go back to the worldmap using F3. What a generous post, Peter, thank you!

I'll see if I get a response regarding the graphics card options and petros' fixes so that if I need to reinstall I can do it all systematically.

That ver. 12.1 definitely sounds like the one to go for. Thanks for providing the link. Just in case, what's the last part of the directory that the mod should be installed in?

Thank you kindly, again, gents.

rock salt <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

Petros' fix that Morgan referred to was the MAPSPEED thing. So that's Build 13 only and not relevant to you. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />
As for the graphics card thing: I don't really know anything about that. I always find that if a problem is hardware-related, I can never find a solution for it. I hate those kind of problems. I prefer code problems caused by the modders. Those are caused by us and can be solved by us. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Great! I'm going to download the mod now then. You already know that I'll let you know how it goes <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

The game is still crashing. I think, then, that it's something a build mod wont fix.

In case I stick with the mod, a couple of Qs:

How do I stop the hostile people in the towns?
Has the music changed? - I didn't catch that awesome piratey music in the tavern (Town_Exploration02)

If anyone thinks they can help; please do.

Thanks again, gents.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->The game is still crashing. I think, then, that it's something a build mod wont fix.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

POTC does not like laptops, PCs with on-board vid chips, and Radeon cards.

Some people have been able to play using Radeon cards, but it usually involved some driver/settings gymnastics. A search on the forum for Radeon might give some solutions, ... or not.

If it is a vid-card problem, then the build won't help. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->How do I stop the hostile people in the towns?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Best way ... kill them. In Build 13, then you can take their loot.
In Build 12 you get their sword and any money they have.

There may be a way to turn it off, but I don't know where it is. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> No one has ever asked. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />
We have just gotten used to being attacked in towns. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/guns.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2guns" border="0" alt="guns.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

Edit: OK, I found something for you.
In the InternalSettings.h file around line 580 you can edit this line:<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->#define TOWN_BANDIT_CHANCE                0.1     // FLOAT - chance of there being bandits at all. x2 if at night.<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->
Changing it to zero should prevent bandits form appearing in town.

Thanks Petros! That is pretty much all I can come up with as well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I ran that search and found about 6 related pages of threads. I've got them up in tabs and been through about 10; most of which were very 'I'm sorry, there's nothing you can do really'. But this is the first I've seen with some hope:

I used to be able to walk around Oxbay and not get attacked. Now my player icon flashes red and I spend my time running away from people. I panic if I try to fight and forget the buttons. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I saw the town bandit chance setting in the buidsettings (I think), can I change it there?

Any response on the music?

As wrote in another post my game have crashed quite frequently lately. I suspected it can be caused by lack of virtual memory. Generally I am using two types of virtual memory alternatively. In the period of crashing my game I just used the classical virtual memory that Window XP adjust automatically itself. So, I changed my virtual memory into my second adjustment manually and crashing have stopped appear. ( I hope I don´t speak too soon). <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> I have two hardrives C,D and at both I manualy adjusted the size of virtual memory at C drive at both fields at the same value - 4000 MB, thus from 4000 MB to 4000 MB and at D drive the same way from 4000 MB to 4000 MB. All the computer run a little faster and game is much more stable. The disadvantage is that this memory reserves constantly 8 GB on hardrives but on the other hand it´s not to much at least for me. But if you would try it, don´t ajust larger value than 4000 MB. I have time-tested the 4000 MB is the best value. With larger value my computer doesn´t work well and smaller value won´t be so efficient. I am using this manual adjusting for several years already it works well for me. It's one of the things included in CouchcaptainCharles "vice city" mod. You can change it in the BuildSettings.h file. Just set it to 0.0. Right I've replaced the modules.

That music file is still in the folder. I went in and out of the tavern, I was probably just unlucky.

I'll give the game another go.

Great job on the build mod, by the way, it looks great!
