Dutchman

I also put those files into the folder and they're also used in the FilmShips mod, but I don't see any difference in size either. The triangle sails still pass through the square-rigged sails. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Hi guys, I'm new here, but i've been following the dutchman forum for a while . figured you might be able to use a few picture i have to help you improve the model some more. This picture shows the basic shape and design of the Dutchman. Hope it helps

We've uh... already got that! But thanks for offering anyway! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Thanks a lot! I knew that picture was floating around somewhere, but we couldn't find it anymore. So thanks for helping us find it again. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

You could've just asked me, you know <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> It's available on IGN Pirates 2 page and on PotC wiki.

I just thought i might add somethings since you are making the flying dutchman. First, it needs to have the triple guns in the front that reload very fast. Also the ship is indestructible. The ship needs to somehow sail below water. And it needs to be faster than normal, but not as fast as the Pearl.

Triple guns: Already added. They're not reloading faster though. That would give the Dutchman too much of an advantage gameplay-wise. The same applies to the ship being indestructible: That would make the game too easy for Davy Jones. Sailing below the water: We have found no way of doing that with the limitations of the game engine. Faster than normal: Can easily be done by changing a value in ships_init.c.

Yes, it may make it easier for Jones, but in the movie his ship IS indestructible as you see in At Worlds End. The only way to win is to escape, which the Pearl is for. She needs to be unusually fast . The whole idea of the advantage of the triple guns IS to give the dutchman a huge advantage. You saw in at worlds end that every one is scared because the Dutchman CANNOT be defeated in battle, that is why the phrase from Mr. Gibbs "If the company controls the chest, they control the sea," which indirectly relates to Davy Jones commanding the Dutchman. Also to help me understand, are you planning to let us play as Davy Jones? In that case then yes, i agree with you about the advantage thing; that it would make it too easy. One more thing to settle this: the Kracken. Somehow it has to be able to be summoned. If still you are not convinced about the dutchman being able to be invincible, then at least have it take no damage in a storm along with the pearl to reenact the Maelstrom sequence.

Indestructible/invincible ships ruin gameplay. Souping up the Pearl merely to account for it meeting the Dutchman is not an option as it then makes it an 'ubership' when sailed in game against the other vessels. The game (unless the philosophy has radically changed since I last frequented this forum) isn't meant to be merely a closed 'film replica' type, but an open-ended affair. Super powered invincible ships would make it ludicrously easy once the player gains possession of those ships. For that matter I can't see why we need the Kraken and 'submarines' either...

uber-ships are fun. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

I agree with Cpt Fabris. The Flying Dutchman and Black Pearl should be somewhat better than the other ships in the game with the Black Pearl being faster than most and the Flying Dutchman being a force to be reckoned with, having many hitpoints (almost unsinkable) and big bad cannons. But it shouldn't be over the top. We are all for film-accuracy, but not if we have to sacrifice gameplay for that. First and foremost this is a game that should be fun to play.

One other thing to take into account is the amount of work required to do what you propose. Making a ship faster can easily be done by modifying one value in ships_init.c. On the other hand: We still have to figure out a good way to have a Kraken attack in the game that works with the game engine, looks reasonably good and is challenging, while not meaning certain death for the character being attacked. At the moment we have a serious lack of modders, so as many good features as people might think up, we can't put them in the game unless someone actually makes the required modifications.

I understand what you are saying, i wasnt sure if we were able to gain possesion of the dutchman, seeing that we might then i DO agree with you, i just thought that you were making his ship unplayable. I am trying to learn how to mod ( meaning make new ships, etc...) I cant afford lightwave or any of those bad boys, but i do know how to use gmax. Dont laugh. i am currently making a ship that resembles the Swedish Galleon Wasa (Vasa) except it is larger with a couple more cannons. What program do you guys use to create new ships? One more thing about the dutchman, this WILL NOT make it invincible, but since the dutchman sails through the storm with Jones playing his organ, the dutchman should be able to sail through a storm without taking damage. Just the dutchman, not the pearl, the dutchman.

Also, i was wondering if you were planning to make a campaign for the dutchman, like there is one for the pearl. That would be fun!

I don't know if the Dutchman will end up being playable. EVERY ship is playable if the player really wants to bother making the required code changes.

Kazeite used 3D Studio MAX for making ships, but the conversion process from 3DS MAX to the game via Inez Dias' Tool proved to be challenging and imperfect. Can GMAX export to VRML? If so, it should work just as fine as 3DS MAX. The program that was originally used for making everything in the game was Maya. Version 5.0 can be found on the PotC Files FTP along with the required export plugin if you care to give it a try... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

The "not taking damage from storms" thing might be possible, but we'll need to find where that code is so that it can be modified. However, with our lack of modders, I think this shouldn't be high on the priority-list. Same for a Dutchman quest: Would be nice, but we can only add it if somebody makes it.

You already might have these, but so what...here they are again.
