Fire!!!

Heeey, nice work!!! I hope it doesnt lags anything, even when 12-16 ships attacking each other. By the way: can you tell me, what are you using to catch the ingame into movie with sound? It can help me as angels from heaven---- Thnks

The Wolf

I use fraps to make the vids.

And for those who want to see what you get before you install, heres a new vid
<a href="http://www.hibiscus-sinensis.com/alexraptor/cannon_fire2.WMV" target="_blank">Right Click and Save As</a>

Of course, watching it wont compare to experiencing it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

I am not at home at the moment, so thanks a lot for posting that video; otherwise I would have needed to wait a whole lot longer to see it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

That looks absolutely awesome! How the HECK did you do that??? It looks VERY realistic. I am greatly looking forward to trying this ingame! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />
BTW: On the video, I had the feeling that the cannon flash looked a bit large somtimes, but other times it is almost completely hidden by smoke. I haven't seen how it looks ingame, so I don't really know if this <i>is</i> the case, but if it is, you might want to try and do something about it.

Anyway: This is an awesome job and a major improvement over how it works at the moment. Thank you ever so much! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

<!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->Edit:<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> I wonder if it would be possible to make the cannon_fire texture have a shape like in the attached picture (that I very quickly whipped up in Paint) instead of having a round shaped flash. That might look even better, if it works. Just a suggestion. Feel free to forget about this suggestion if you think it works fine the way it is. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
(The black part in the picture is the cannon, the red part is the fire coming out of it. As you can see, the fire is a long flash, instead of a round flash)

thanks pieter, as a matter of fact i was actually considering that, but i havent had much luck so far with an elongeated flash

As you stated about the flash, it was tricky buisness, i needed to try a balance of what looked good there. theres also the fact that we havent been able to implement lighting at sea ...yet wich also contributed to me deciding to make it a little bit larger.

EDIT: ok i tweaked the size down a little bit <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

It never ends, does it, but it looks like your getting your wish <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Of course, dont judge the vid compleatly, since it only recorded at 20FPS the particles look more dispersed than they really are.

And shes up for download, Merciless's cannon FX 2.0 on the FTP, i figured it was fitting since the entire cannon flash has been redone from scratch.

Ive tested it, it should hopefully work well even in major ship battles, it didnt give as much of a framerate hit as the default build post build smoke does.
<a href="http://www.hibiscus-sinensis.com/alexraptor/cannon_fire2.WMV" target="_blank">Right Click and Save As</a>

follow the instructions and you will be fine, Right click and save as, and make shure its a .WMV, if it wants you to save as something else make shure you change extension to .WMV

BTW: I notice that in particles.ini, you refer to cannonflash3.tga, which doesn't exist. Just to let you know... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I tested and can confirm it looks great! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Just so you know. ive reuploaded 2.0 again lol

Actually i had to reduce the particle count on the fire from 16 to 8. so the fire burst might not look as densly packed, but it still looks very good.

The problem was, whenever there seemed to be a slight FPS drop the fire flash seemed to last for a whole second or so, but it seems to be fixed now that ive reduced the fire to just 8 particles

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> there,

Great looking mod, Merciless. Very impressive seeing the flash and then the smoke billowing out along the path of the shot. I have noticed the flash delay a little, as you mentioned, so I'll have to get your latest tweak from the ftp, however, even as is, it seems to be far less taxing on the frame rate than the previous cannon smoke.

Well done there, matey.

Cheers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

thank you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> i beleive the main problem with the old smoke was that there was simply too much of it. both for the game engine and for the realism

UPDATE!

Be shure to download cannon FX 2.0 again, ive managed to enhance it further.
While it looked good and all i felt it was lacking something, something in the fire. then when playing around i came across ParticleFire technique(sp?) so i applied that to the cannon fire, the result was absolutley stunning! It looks like fire. it also kind of lights up the texture so that one gets an effect that looks like lighting in the smoke cloud. now all i need to do is figure out how to if possible add a real light that lights the hull up <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Note: this image was taken with smoke off to show the intensity of the flames.

Nice one, MM. Excellent work. I'll be downloading immediately.

Nice work <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

If it might save you some time; a long while back, the discussion came up about possibly adding lamps to ships to get the same effect as the street lamps in towns at night.

It was explained, that the way POTC handles lamp lighting is through the use of a separate tga.tx for morning, afternoon, evening, and night.

To do this for ships would require a new tga.tx for each ship, to be loaded at night, which would basically paint the lighting effect on the hull.

As most of the lighting would affect the deck of a ship, the deck.tga.tx would have to be redone also.

Problem here is that all (most all) of the ships use different parts of the Deck.tga.tx file in different ways so that would require a separate deck.tga for each one, and even then the mapping of lit parts might not work when applied over the entire deck.

In the case of cannon fire, while it would only involves the hull tga.tx, would require a different one, or part of one, for each cannon.
Then they would have to be loaded/changed dynamically as the guns fired, and I believe that there is no way to change textures on the fly. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

That looks so good it's almost ridiculous!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />
