Game Crashes

would be worth a shot leaving them out to try if you're right. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> heck, just about anything's worth a shot to try with these mods!
 
Hi,

I am playing 14 alpha 7 Full and need to know a few basic things here before I can attribute to this discussion:

-What is a CTD? ( I get ramdpm black screens, I seldom experience "game crashes")
-What does going from ship to "dock" mean? (What is the "dock"?)

How come I dont experience the same bugs around Falaise de Fleur that Petros is experiencing? (In FdF,everything is smooth and I can´t even hire crew at midnight, unlike in Antigua Port, from where I can hire crew at midnight with no problems?)

I don't see why these would cause the game to crash. I can see why that would work fine, because it works completely different than the tavern crew hire. There's also a normal tavern at Antigua, outside the port.
 
Update from yesterday:
Since then I tried saving at map mode without success.

One attempt lasted 5 min. and triggered my screen saver and could not be recovered.

After turning off my windows screensaver, I tried again.

My longest wait was 9 min. with no save.
It looks like only land saves are now possible as I have not been able to save from map mode in the last 6 hours of play

Oh, and let me not forget, I experienced many CTD, at least half with Windows error notifications, all forcing me to load from a previous land save.

It has gotten so that I don't want to do anything at sea anymore.

This is the worse experience I have had in my 4 years of mod use/testing.
Perhaps POTC doesn't like new computers. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

I'd write pretty much everything same to you - I used your workaround and managed to get off Isla Muelle, but as you say I experience a huge amount of random CTDs here and there, with windows error message... I haven't tried to save on high seas yet though. (I also got a new computer :p )
 
That is quite worrisome. And that is using Build 13 Final? You had Build 13 Full installed once, didn't you? Did you have the same problems with that?
 
Yes, Build 13 final for me and possibly for Petros according to his signature. This is the first time I play the game with build 13 final, I used to have an older version of it, didn't experience any of that then.

Yep, I had Build13 Full and update 2.

I never saw CTDs.

Now I get several per hour.

I might just go the route Build 12.1\Build 13_Full\B13_update3_Full, just for my own sanity.
 
Update 2? Not Update 3? That suggests the problems are somehow caused by Update 3. Do you still have the Update 2 file? Could you send it to me? I don't have it anymore.
 
No, I trashed both update 1 and 2 files when I transferred stuff to this computer.

I didn't think that with update 3 being around for so long, I would need to go back to them.

I might as well go the route of B12 \B13 full\ update 3 full to see if that works.

If it does, then the problem would be with B13 Final.

If not, then it might be with update 3 or perhaps my newer vid card.

It's certainly somewhere between B12.1 and B13F. I played 12.1 and even preB13 for days without so much as a hickup, but then installed B13Final and everything went to sh*t. So after ANOTHER uninstall and reinstall to B12.1 ( and a new game), everything is peachy keen. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />
 
OK, I can rule out one thing, it definitely is not my hardware.

I don't have the old installers anymore, but found an installed version of post_B12 from Nov. 2005.
I think this was what you called the Pre 13 base.
I had been using this version to add all my ships up to Sept. 2006.

It had Screwface's Islands thru 2005 and CCC's map ships.

I loaded some saves from back then and found that Map mode sailing was smooth.
Going into and out of sea mode was instantaneous, even in large sea battles, and I had 4 ships.
Saving games at sea was just as fast, so it can't be the new computer/vid hardware that is the problem now.

Pieter, I remember Rad and I both reporting how sluggish it was, saving games from map mode when B13 Full came out. It continued through update 1.

My guess is that this problem, and whatever code accesses the "sea_ai.dll" has only gotten worse to the point of making this version unusable.

But I speak too soon as I have not tried Build13_Full + update3_full yet.

Also could you please test Build 13 Full without installing any updates? I'd like to know if the problem was caused in the updates or not.
I saved on the worldmap quite recently in my Alpha 8 WIP and it worked just fine. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

On a hunch I went back to my Build 13_Final installation.

In worldmap.c I changed ...

to stock value <b>1.0</b>
I forgot to check worldmap_globals.c for

... so that remained the same.

Anyway, for over 5 hours, I have tried to make the thing "crash" with no success. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Sailing with several ships, saving and loading from map mode, getting into big battles, day or night, all went smoothly.

Even saving from map, right before a battle encounter, and then loading the game again at that point to enter into that battle, worked.
This always caused CTDs before.

This will be no help for those who like a slower map.
Perhaps there is some value greater than 0.6 and less than 1.0 that will work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Also, I don't know why this worked for me when I didn't change the Worldmap_globals.c value but only the worldmap.c one. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

So the game works seemingly fine with MAPSPEED 1.0, but causes trouble with MAPSPEED 6.0, which is actually SLOWER than 1.0?

Yeah..this also worked for me.. (It was set to 0.6 in #Define MAPSPEED param of the worldmap.c file thou). Set it to 1.0 and so far no crashes in B13 Final. ( I made a seperate install of B13F so I wouldn't screw up mu B12.1 game). I also didn't change the value in worldmap_globals.c, so it's still set to 0.6 (IE: #Define WDM_TIMESCALE).

I can't save in worldmap or seamode tho, only on land. The SAVE option is grayed out when in opens seas or worldmap.

it seems logical to me. the game has more time to process everything, so the chance of overloading it is very small. as for the saving, just about anything fails without reason, by the looks of it. who knows, maybe it will fix itself in the same mysterious way that it appeared.

Also the game all together is alot smoother during the food/crew morale daily updates ( it used to lag quite a bit between each update). Saves and reloads are also faster then before.
 
It doesn't seem logical to me because the game has LESS time to process everything. With the Build 13 of 0.6, the game worldmap runs slower, but the issues are said to be fixed when the value is INCREASED again to 1.0. I am confused.
