Game Crashes

<!--quoteo(post=218803:date=Oct 24 2007, 04:16 PM:name=Pieter Boelen)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Pieter Boelen @ Oct 24 2007, 04:16 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->It doesn't seem logical to me because the game has LESS time to process everything. With the Build 13 of 0.6, the game worldmap runs slower, but the issues are said to be fixed when the value is INCREASED again to 1.0. I am confused.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Slowing down sea travel gives more time to us with our slow brains, but does not necessarily give the CPU more time.
Slowdown programs have been used to occupy fast CPUs so they can run DOS games.
They actually give the computer less time to carry out game functions. This works well for games with few calculations.

Now from the start let me say that I don't pretend to know how the games mapmode speed is reduced.

When I got the idea for the fix, before actually changing any settings I thought to myself:

1. Everything wrong happens during mapmode (involving sea_ai.dll access)
2. Time at sea was changed (lengthening it).
3. Time is also involved in so many game update functions: date, food, morale, other ships, their morale, nation relations, etc.
4. What if the timing process used to drag out time on sea somehow interferes with how engine.exe carries out hard coded sea_ai.dll access. What the heck, let me try something.

Then I decided to change the settings back to stock settings to test this.
I know very little of code, so what I'm showing the world here is just how I think and approach problems.

I may be right ... but for all the wrong reasons.

Has anyone tried these specfic worldmap.c edits with B14.7A yet, to see if it increases stability in that build? I'm loath to download/install that whole set again if it's still as crash-prone.

I wonder if it has to do with the fact that 0.6 is not a "whole value". I wonder if you could set the mapmode to "2.0" and it would still work fine. Also would "0.5" work, since that is the half of "1.0"? Just some random thoughts.

To Shingen: Alpha 7 is the same as ever. Alpha 7 Plus isn't brilliant either, bugwise. My current test game version is horrible. We intend to start some serious bughunting effort on short notice. I am going to post a seperate thread on this today.

I'd guess that this value would make the map sailing go twice the speed of stock, which is just the opposite of what the modders wanted.

I'd suggest contacting CCC. I think he worked on this, didn't he?

But I'd like to know what would happen stability-wise for the game. Just a scientific interest. I am not suggesting upping the default to 2.0; we really DON'T want to do that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

I am thinking it might make a difference and if 0.5 turns out to be stable while 0.6 is not, we might use that for the new default. You know the exact details of the bug, so I think you could check it the best. I never really had that problem, so I personally can't test it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Will do! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Thanks a lot! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

I started a new game with #define MAPSPEED 0.5 and found that it behaved that same as my first game at 0.6.

Saving at see is quick at first, but as the game progresses, they get longer and longer.

Saves have gone from 60 sec. to 90 sec., back to 50, and that last took 140 sec.
This is already too long, and it will slowly get worse until saving is no longer possible, so I'm not testing that anymore.

I'm going back to 1.0.
Others testing Build 13 final or 13full (it was there also as Rad and I had reported) could split up the remaining settings above 0.6 to see if any work, remembering that it takes many saves over several "game-days" for the bug to show itself.

Anyway, I haven't been feeling that well this past week, with an abscess and bad extraction, that is still hurting.

Lo-man particles has been my only bright spot.

Or just playing?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I left several things undone.

I planned to do a barque (skin and rigging). It is still in my head <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Also, I have an unfinished quest to complete. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
I'm very slowly getting the files, new locations, characters, items and dialogues that I had already done, back into my game.

So 0.5 doesn't work right either? That's a shame. Thanks for testing though. Much appreciated! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

Looking forward to any work you manage to do. As far as questmaking is concerned: We now have two people on the forum who can help you with it: Short Jack Gold and Bartolomeu o Portugues. They have both been working on quests lately. So that should be good. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I hope you'll be feeling better soon! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Waiting eagerly on it Petros <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Thanks <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />
Skinning is at times, just as much fun as playing, for me at least.
