Ged's Icons Lair

sounds good! i love the microscope. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> does the compass only improve your sailing skill or does it effect gameplay in a greater way? the normal one, of course.

At the moment the items are just regular skill enhancing items:
<b>Microscope:</b> Leadership +1 (price: 1000)
<b>Compass:</b> Sailing +1 (price: 2000)
<b>Scales:</b> Commerce +2 (price: 5000)
<b>Sextant:</b> Sailing +3 (price: 10000)
<b>Doctor's Toolkit:</b> Defence +2 (price: 8000)

The Isla de Muerte compass doesn't do anything at all yet.

Does anyone have any suggestions for more features with the items? I have the following random ideas:
- A sextant allows the player to see the ship's position in the map screen (at the moment you can see the position of your ship there always)
- Compass will enable the on-screen display while sailing (if you don't have a compass, the display won't be there at all)
- Clock will enable the onscreen time display (can also be turned on in BuildSettings.h)

Not sure if my suggestions are actually good ideas though. Might actually be pretty darn annoying. Anyway: Please post your suggestions.

And a clock item would still be useful. Anyone would like to make one? Doesn't have to be elaborate, it just needs to be a watch/clock. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

as long as you can buy the compass at a low level, it would be fie in my opinion. i think that the sextant should increase the sailing skill by 2, not 3. 3 is a bit too much.

I like the idea`s especially that of the compass and clock, otherwise, you get a compas, while you infact, have non. So, no compas, no compas on screen is a logic, and realistic.

+3 sailing is much, yes, but the sextant is quite expensive as well to balance that. And I set all items to not be found at random, but only available from traders, so you must buy them. But we could tone it down somewhat. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

The prices look good, Pieter.

I'd originally suggested books to increase skills. These would be pretty mundane, but there's a good opportunity for people to write amusing item descriptions for them. There's also the possibility of several different books with the skill bonuses stacking. And you coud have books that actually lower your skill:

"The One Minute Manager" Leadership -1

Great that you finally introduced those items that belong to the Age of Sail. IMHO much more fitting than magic crystals than enhance your gunners' skills.

Books are a good idea, cause they can be used for every skill.

actually, 10000 gold is pretty cheap. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> not as an avarage for items, but i can buy such a thing at level 2. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

The books can easily be added as well. We already have the image for them somewhere, so we can just recycle that. If a book lowers skills, it should do so in a hidden way so the player won't notice. This is pretty possible. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

So I challenge you all to write up some amusing item descriptions for skill-enhancing/decreasing books! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

anyone play fable? i don't, but the books might be usefull for this purpose in some way.

In voyage century there is a interface picture of a book, that has the style of POTC, it has the same background.

what i meant with those books was the titles and contents. it could give some ideas.

Can somebody hyjack that picture and post it here then? We migth be able to use it. But I think there are some book interface pictures in PotC already.

What are you looking for, a picture of an open book?

Closed book, open book, doesn't matter as long as we can use it. There already is a book at items4.tga.tx that we can use. Though a new picture is always welcome. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

So? Anyone come with any witty item descriptions yet? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

Lord Cutler Beckett: "I'll still want that clock/watch. Consider that in your calculations."

I may have some images from Seadogs. What do you think of those : [attachmentid=860]

i just discovered something that is a great tip for those who don't have a compass (when the mod comes out): it turnes out that the moon is always in the west, and the sun is always in the east. (although i'm not sure about the sun.) there's your indication of where you're going!

From what I've seen, the sun now rises in the west and sets in the east. Just a slight problem with the map coordinate system. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I tried fixing it once. I could get the sun in the right part of the sky, but all the light and shadows were wrong. It wasn't pretty.

Oh, and in the middle of the day, the sun will be in the northern part of the sky. Just in case you're trying to navigate by the sun alone.

Hook

well, it would be incredibly usefull when you wouldn't have a compass. if the sun is in the north in the middle of the day, in the east in the evening, and the moon in the west in the early night (it might be always in the same place) we only have to see where the sun is in the morning and we can use the most ancient way to navigate in the game!
