His wiki entry needs to be updated as its scant and not too good. I know he attacked slaver ships, did he let them loose afterwards or something?? No idea if he was an anglo Irish or of another descent but it was common for Irishmen to sail with the Royal Navy or Merchant Navy as Ireland was considered a dominion and part of England for Naval sake of that period.

Godfather of Pirate Books:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_General_History_of_the_Pyrates
Good information on Seegar:
http://brethrencoast.com/pirate/Edward_England.html

He had a good nature and unusual kindness, England didn't believe in torturing victims unless they couldn't otherwise be persuaded. This also led to his undoing. He was deposed for freeing a captured merchant captain, and died a beggar on Madagascar.

I did read somewhere that he was Catholic so that would be unusual if he was Anglo Irish but not impossible.
However the surname Seegar is not common in Ireland :http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Seegar

Another Famous Irish Pirate Anne Bonney was born Anne Cormac in Kinsale County Cork, Ireland, the daughter of a servant woman, Mary Brennan, and her employer, lawyer William Cormac, whose cunning wife soon discovered the affair. Fleeing the scandal, William Cormac, Mary Brennan, and young Anne sailed across the Atlantic, to settle in Charleston, S.C.

I myself have some Scot and Irish blood. Yes iv never heard of Seegar. Many Irish did sail with British ships and Irish ports where busy,Ireland is a complex Historical hot pot and although many did resent the English, however many did serve and the Irish had many famous or infamous persons going around America. I think there is an old film with rock hudson or was it Errol Flynn somethign about Ireland in Napoleonic times and some hero who fought the English? No idea what the title was but probably worth watching. Yes many Irish and Scots rogue and rebel types went to the New World trying to escape the English somehow or another. John Paul Jones the American Privateer and Naval Captain, himself a Scot Jacobite who left to the Americas after his family was ill treated by the Georgian establishment,he changed his surname(Jones is welsh)and after some trouble with a mutinous crew in which he killed one of his officers in a fight,he left for the colonies and had to elave the west indies. He then became an American hero. Red Leg Greaves another Scot who ended as slave and with rebel roots but who contrary to Jones ended serving the crown, well earning a pardon via port royale prison escape and he died a wealthy respectable man, charitable and philantropic.

Great discussion mates and great sources too.

I am so glad my mod is inspiring this kind of dialogue. This is the kind of thing I was hoping for. :onya

True MK nothing like a good historical discussion.
Irish in French Military:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Brigade_(France)

It has always been theorised that most of the English/Irish/Scottish/Welsh pirates of the golden age were Jacobites:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobitism

I suspect Edward England was after all he did name his flagship the "Royal James".
I got a shock last night currently I am reading a book :http://www.history.org.uk/resources/general_resource_6437_73.html
On page 85 they mention Edward England as a more successful pirate and state that he was a cruel man beating prisoners etc?
This statement flies in the face of everything that has been previously written about him.
Yes he did what he had to but he was not unnecessarily cruel. He was stripped of his command and money and had a slow impoverished death for not killing James Macrae.

On a side note famous pirate Bartholomew Roberts would not employ Irishmen as crew
after the actions of Walter Kennedy :
Not long after, while Roberts was off chasing a ship he thought had supplies, some of his men, led by Walter Kennedy, made off with the Portuguese treasure ship and most of the loot. Roberts was infuriated and determined to not let it happen again. The pirates wrote up a set of articles and made all newcomers swear to them. It included payments for those injured in battle and punishments for those who stole, deserted or committed other crimes. The articles also excluded Irishmen from becoming full members of the crew: this was most likely in remembrance of Kennedy, who was Irish.

Kennedy was however born in London England probably to Irish parents.

For a one man show this mod is excellent, it finally brings together a concentrated mod release for COAS.
If this had EXP gain during direct sail like New Horizons and random encounters, this would replace the latter mod immediately.
I love how you added items like the coins, jewels and other unique items that are worth a good bit of coin - gives searching loot a whole new meaning and new ways to make money. The historical focus in this mod is good. And FINALLY, being able to take cannon after a battle!

Did encounter some issues:

Did encounter one issue of gaining positive reputation when I engaged in a tavern fight after calling a man a rat. Took care of him and said something about those coward land rats running away.... should be negative rep. gain. After I left the tavern an error popped up saying it could not generate a character, I suspect someone who would have commented on my actions.

Had some issues of not being able to board surrendered ships, haven't encountered that in a long time thou.

The reward for escorting merchants and passengers are very low - I have only seen around 1k at most.

As some others have pointed out, a sign articles system would be interesting, usually my crew payments are extremely high, thou I suppose it adds some challenge, I can't imagine sailors being payed that much without an agreement thou. Subjective I suppose.

Many locations suffer from that reverse lighting issue, but in the readme it says you are already aware.

Ideas for the future:

Since NPCs can board other ships and capture them, it would be interesting too see squadrens attack forts and attempt to capture colonies.

Additional theaters to the Caribbean, for example, European Theater, African Theater, Asian Theater, etc. Would be cool to raid around the globe, but I know this one is WAY off current time limits. Just throwing it out there thou. Voyage century online uses the same engine (older version I believe) and the location files are the same file format. I believe this is what New Horizons is doing, they added Cartagena with a VCO location.

Importing things form New Horizons, such as walking around the deck of your ship, among others.

Keep up the hard work!

DITTO! As if i had written the same words in my review. There are some errors and game breakers but perfect takes time and more volunteers specially in coding and graphics editing. Found some flemish privateer ship that neither fired at you or could be fired on except with third person view and when surrendered by asking to surrender could'nt be boarded!! I would add, adding more countries like POTC. Imagine a hybrid between this,POTC and the new Russian game converted into English. It is still a hard game for beginners and the wages system should be looked as as also the rewards for some of the quests. I did that governor secret agent package quest and it was almost impossible without cheating a bit. If you need my help let me know?

This mod seems great, but i don't understand something (sorry if it wrote somewhere ) GOF mean Gentlemen of Fortune i guess, so do we need to install GOF before install this mod ?

I am having an issue when I toggle the mod options that they will not save or go into effect. I change the realistic weight option, no weight change in game. I exit the game and come back in, it reverts to default. Same applies to all optional mod options. I have removed all the "options" files, reinitialized, loaded and exited several times. All to no avail.

I got this too, mod option are always on default. About my sound bug while using that mod, i'm the only one to have it ?

I do not have the options problem in my game. All I can assume is that its germane/related to the version of the mod and fixes loaded after.

On the sound....for patch1 I believe that I will load five different FMODEX files. I find that different computers prefer different fmodex files better than others. The one currently in the mod now works best in my computer. I have experimented with every fmodex file I could get ahold of. If you have an older computer or laptop some of the other fmodex files will work better. However by providing players with a choice of different fmodex files, you can experiment yourself and figure out which one of the five works the best with your hardware.

I really believe that once I get the full OGG file to MP3 conversion of all sounds complete, that between the fmodex and mp3 conversion that the sound will be the best possible.

I would also add that if you go into a battle and you see that there is no sound or no cannon sounds, that if you quickly save (F6), and then save and quit.....then start your game back up and go to your save....90 percent of the time you will have sound again.

MK,

I have confirmed another TWO quest bugs that have returned in GOF ERAS Mod.
I did not realize any part of the quest log file has already changed?

Blue Bird Quest
Mouelhy reported the Blue Bird quest failure bug when boarding, so I reloaded my game from that point to test every possible combination (boarding, non-boarding, no fighters, etc.)
This bug is confirmed, and it was NOT here before the V2 update and was working correctly in the past. The only way to successfully end the quest is to simply sink the ship.

Edward Low (Sea Wolf) Pirate Nation Quest
The same goes for the final Sea Wolf capture which I also tested with the update, repeatedly to see if it was a coding anomaly.
After capture it always reports that you sank the ship after boarding.
This was not there before either.

This is game you really love to hate. In its original form it was buggy as hell.
In its new form, it just makes you head hurt every time you think you fixed the problem.
I may be able to find the issues in the coding, and will look into it, but if someone already knows the answer please let the MOD world know.

Thanks Blackknight! :onya

Appreciate the help!

I will look into it. I have rebuilt my ASUS G73 gaming laptop but ASUS no longer has the bios backup disks available. So I loaded it up with windows7 but cannot find the ATI radeon driver for the video card so I can experiment and finish writing the patch.

This is the only advanced gaming computer I have with me currently so am dead in the water unless I can get that driver.

The cabin interior for the frigate in the Peter Blood questline is wrong, it seems. It has the nice, open floor cabin when you initially board the ship and fight the cabin, but once you gain control of the ship, the cabin interior is the small cabin with the privy. How can I return the cabin to normal?

Ok i got a problem with a 4th rate frigate... somehow the boarding function does not work anymore... how the hell am i gonna make money to finance 50k cash per month when my 350 crew army is not allowed to board the enemy... seriously whats the problem there? anyone got a fix?

This is a fairly easy fix, but requires a NEW GAME or you can "purchase" a new Arabella from a shipyard use the tweak I use to spawn specific ships immediately located here (http://www.piratesahoy.net/threads/testing-out-a-new-ship-in-game-the-easy-way.21597/) which should update this ship with a system reinit of the file.

You need to change one line in the Ships_init.c.

Find the //Frigate Arabella// quest ship (its near the bottom of the file):

locate this line:

refship.CabinType = "Cabin_Medium"; // boal 28.03.05

CHANGE IT TO:

refship.CabinType = "Cabin"; // boal 28.03.05

This will give you the larger proper cabin based on the size of the ship.
The "Cabin_Huge" which is found on some very large ships is meant for Man-O-Wars and First Rate ships.

Enjoy!
