Released Heavy Sloop of War, 1797

That's the most beautiful explanation I've ever seen. And on that note, you seem to be reading my mind. You're making all of the vessels I wanted to see ingame.
Thank you, compliments like that just make me want to build more and more of these ships! I hope to fill the important gaps in ship types still left for the late 1700s/early 1800s, and I try to select the best designs of each type, or at least the best representative of a certain type of ship. Unfortunately I now have less free time than ever to get the ones ive already built ingame(which is long overdue, and needs to be done before I start any more ships) but luckily that's only temporary. I'm slowly chipping away at the process of making them ready for sea whenever I can :)

I just finished scaling her, here's how she compares to the Greyhound in size

The next step should be exporting to maya! :dance

That ship is a nice size; good work, mate! I'm sure we can use her to replace some of the stock-based brigs. :keith

Are you still thinking of getting either the Prince or Revolutionnaire in the game first?
If so, please remind me where you got to in the relevant thread, so I can try to help move the ship along.
I know I keep forgetting to help you out, so I want to fix that and aim to get one of your ships ready for sending to Craiggo pretty soon. :doff

Thanks! that would be nice to see! :yes At this point i am just doing little things on all of them when I have the time, but I have run out of little things to do :cheeky Both this ship and the Revolutionnaire are at the same stage; prepared for export to maya. So I havent decided which of those two I'll do first. I was thinking of getting the Prince done before either, because I built it first, it is relatively small and simple, and it is the farthest along. It's still waiting on those gratings though! ;) and its alright, but If you could work on those that would be great! :doff I admit that they are fairly minor, but I think they would be visible on deck when at sea, and make the gratings asymmetrical and I dont know how that would affect texturing. After that the Prince is ready for whatever is next, be it UV mapping and textures, or locators, or walk files or I dont know what. :onya My plan is to start on the Revolutionnaire or Volage while Craiggo works on texturing the Prince. Hopefully they will go much faster because I didnt model anything assemetrically or make all those begginers mistakes like I did with the prince

I'll see if I can get that done and over with today, while I have the time available. :dance

Shes in maya and I have the guns and boats textured :keith

Nice! Not long 'till she's ready for exporting then, eh? :sail

BTW, I couldn't help but notice your work on the Constitution on your Flickr account; looking good with the better cannons!

I hope so! though UV Mapping is a pain, especially for the rigging and such, but she will get there :onya
Thanks! Hopefully she can set sail soon too, and actually has a pretty good chance of it, considering the UV mapping on the Constitution is already done for me :cheeky

Where is she at? I could help with sailorpoints/walfile, textures, rigging, locators and such.

Thanks Craiggo! That would be great! :doff im afraid she is still in maya, in fact she is still a little behind the Prince in terms of progress. Unfortunately I haven't had chance to do anything more since i put the latest pics up, there is still alot of UV mapping I have to do on both ships, and this one still needs the masts put in seperate files and such. You need me to export to .gm format before any of the locaters, walkfiles, rigging, etc can be done right? If you know how to UV map in Maya, I will gladly send either this ship or the Prince in .Mb format, but if not I'll hand her over when i'm done UV mapping, have assigned basic textures, and have converted to .gm. :keith

If you're planning on modifying the Constitution's Sail Settings at all, I think they would work well and look good set the same as the picture of Constitution I posted for the Revolutionnaire.
(That kind of stuff merits a status of high priority from me since I sail on tall ships, I guess.)

Edit: and for any of you who wish to texture rigging (this is very worn rigging), one of my shipmates posted this video that gives a very detailed view:
One-Handed Climbing- The don't try it at home.

I will certainly try for that, It will be a good way to learn how for my other ships :onya I have yet to decide whether I will set topgallants and one or two jibs in addition to the topsails and spanker. The reason I am considering this for constitution (and the Revolutionnaire and Volage) Is because the royal yards are set as well and the vast majority of paintings, accounts, etc never show more than one set of the uppermost set of sails furled in battle, and it seems it was common practice to strike down yards above that if at all possible before battle. for a ship without royals, I would set topsails only. Without all the staysails and such on the constitution, and with only one or two jibs set, the amount of sail will be reduced signifigantly from how it is currently, and I think it is perfectly realistic (it just depends on the conditions) and either way its better than now :keith but this is all theory, I stilll havnt figured out how to do this yet :facepalm

When you do figure it out:
While t'gallants were used in battle, they had to be taken in very frequently due to heavy winds. I still feel that the setting I proposed gives a bit more realism in gales and fair weather gales, while still being accurate for battle. But after considering all of that, it'll be your choice as the modeler.
Of course, you can't strike down your yards in the game, but I think I'll argue that that was captain's prerogative as opposed to a set practice.
1. The extra thrust from the royals could be very useful (see Surprise vs. Torgud. I usually wouldn't reference a novel, but O'Brian's research is always immaculate. The fores'l was used in the book, but It's the same idea)
2. Yards are a pain to remove. Trust me, I've done it before. It took forever, and it hurt. I admit that they would have been better at that back then, though.
3. Most ships of that era didn't actually carry permanent royals, which could be misleading. They were generally struck when they were not expected to be needed, and rigged when they were needed. Perfect examples of this from that era are the replica Surprise, former Rose, and the Brig Niagara (I don't think that's been put into the game yet. It would make a perfect replacement for the "fast brig"). You also see the same thing with the Pride of Baltimore II's T'gallant.

Ah, but the same argument could be made for lighter winds :razz I have used the sailplans of the USS Philidelphia (for the Revolutionnaire) and the USS Wasp (for the Volage) as a basis for my masts, so that might explain it ( If i'm not mistaken, American warships generally had larger and taller rigs than their European counterparts) and since the royals are already there it would be a pain to remove them at this point and shorten their masts. But for my next two ships, ( an 18 gun brig and an English 36 gun frigate) I probably won't rig royals, and itll be topsails, jib, and spanker for them. :onya

I still do think the royals should be there ingame, since I am a fan of the upper yards and stuns'ls, providing that they can hold. The permanent royals does seem to be a very American thing, as well as the mizzen royals) They were of course, outnumbered, and had to run away far more often than the European ships. I find that that results in most smallish American vessels looking far more predatory and rakish than their European cousins. (Quality and speed over quantity) I like the American look; it makes for a faster looking, more attractive vessel.
Just to clarify, the Royal t'gallant masts stay the same length, royals or no, witch is perfectly illustrated on the Niagara.

On an unrelated note, I'm also planning to test my theory that t'gallantmasts weren't very hard to de-rig at all, since everything on the Pilgrim is coming down before next season. That'll be a fun one. Right now we're in that antiquated-looking royal-less state.

Yeah, i mean the royals will still be there, they will just be furled for battle sails. I like the american look too, and I will make some more american ships in the future as well. :onya

So now that the Prince de Neufchatel is in gm format, I thought it was about time to show my Progress on the Volage. :cheeky

I have started on an American Version, to be called a Hornet-Class sloop of war in game, but I have run into some problems with the texture for the decorations….

Even though the window pieces don’t show up, it can be seen in the wireframe http://www.flickr.com/photos/64339105@N08/6804920070/in/photostream that they are still there, and they appear completely normal when I put the gold decoration texture back on. Anyone seen this sort of thing before? :facepalm

I love the paint. Even tough it's not completely accurate, the blue bulwarks complement the vessel very well. I do have one nitpicky issue that might be easy to fix. (besides the shrouds, wich we allready went over) The masts proper (lowest mast segments) on a vessel of that time period would have been painted, with very few acceptions, as well as the bowsprit. (not the jibboom, just the innermost spar. While you could take the artistic liberty to keep them as they are, I think a very light ochre (lighter than on the hull- see the replica Surprise as an example) or black would look good on the ochre scheme, white would look good on the black and white scheme, and black would look good on the red scheme. (all historic colors)

Other than that, I must say that these are my favorite textures I've seen for this game. (This is one of the few reds I would consider using)

Edit: standing rigging (stay and the like) was always tarred black.
