How Do You Start Modding

See attached. It's a self-extracting 7-Zip file to make the filesize as small as possible.

i cant get gm viewer to work it is just a grey screen do you know why?
Did you select any GM file yet? Did you select the accompanying texture folder?

WOW! What's up with all the RED??? :shock

Anyway, you haven't selected a GM file to load. In the upper left part of the screen,
go to the folder where the ship model is stored and select one of the GM files in the folder.
Something should show up then. :yes

the files do not show up in the In the upper left part of the screen
only in the center part of the screen.

p.s i like red.

Try opening models in the game directory :3 You should be able to view anything and everything that is a geometry (gm) file.

ok i think it is because i have not got the base game or mods installed, because my basegame is not currently working, i will get another copy by friday and i shall install all the mods and try again then :onya

That is totally unrelated; the GM Viewer works regardless of whether the game works or not.

STEP 1:
You must browse to the MODEL folder,
eg. folder containing the model files you want to view,
in the upper left part of the screen.
The GM files contained in the selected folder will now appear to the right of the folder selection.

STEP 2:
Now you should browse to the Texture folder,
eg. folder containing the texture files used by the model you want to view,
in the left part of the screen below the model folder selection.

STEP 3:
Now select one of the GM files and it should show up with the proper texture used.

All of this is shown on this screenshot as well:

I cannot make it much easier than this.

You've got both folders correctly selected.
Now all you need to do is to actually select a GM file as per step #3.
Just double-click on "hooker1.gm" and the ship should appear.

Well, his screenshot shows that he did manage to get the texture file in GIMP.
So I think he managed to figure out the TX Converter at least.

This is going to be fun :3

You paint the ships, I make them sail properly.

What's sounds like a good English counter to the Baltimore Clipper (Which is famous for blockade running amongst other things like a world record speed of 17-22 knots)? I want names :p

Oh I might try retexturing a ship myself :3 - a white snow :p

there must be somthing wrong with the actual file of GM as i have followed all steps exactly as told
and it still doesnt work. when i double-click on hooker1 nothing happens. i have been able to transfere the files into GIMP though and i practiced textuer art for ages. however i havent fuigerd out how to change them back yet as after you edit them they turn into GIMP files and the tx converter cant open them. but thats not too much of a problem i will find out how to cope with that soon.the only problem is the GM viewer i just cant get it to work, im shure i have installed it right.

p.s quote - "What's sounds like a good English counter to the Baltimore Clipper"
"The English Clipper"
"The British Clipper"

"Plymouth Clipper" or something like that?

Is the name of the GM file you select turning "blue" as on my screenshot?
That's what should be happening when you select it.

The GIMP should be able to save as TGA file, no?
Is there not a "Save as..." button or something?

the gm file isnt turning blue it just goes black for some reason why is this, the GIMP/TGA problem was my fault i saved it wrong.

also what about "the yorkshire Clipper"

i attached a image of GM viewer

Hehe good ideas there.

I went for a bit of Royal Navy trademark aggressiveness in that department; the Yorkshire Clipper was called "HMS London" randomly by the game (you can see that in the NH manual prototype); on hindsight a ship named after a capital should be... a capital ship, but HMS River Thames sounded perfect for a "River-class" military vessel; of which there is an historical example: the WW2 River class destroyer escort.

"hooker1" plays a similar role in WBT and sure looks the part, as a heavy schooner that is fast and mean at all points of sail (but is rather difficult to turn).

It probably turns black because of the same reason that the background goes red: your computer configuration.
I don't know anymore now why the model doesn't show up; it looks like you've got things set up right.

Good News - i have been practicing textuer art for hooker1, only basic stuff currently but i shall move on to more complicated work soon. also i can use GIMP and TX Converter.

Bad News - i cant get GM Viewer to work, i shall try re-downloading it
maby i didnt install it right, shure i did though.

however for now i shall keep practicing skins for hooker1 (so i get the hang of it before i move on too any thing complicated), this is going to be great. :keith

p.s i found a great music file that would be great for a calm walk in the jungle, or at least in my opinion, unfortanatley i cant upload it though as this site wont let me.
