Modified Battleship

oh i wish! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

They'll wrap round with a curve and I'll be able to add some curve to the stern windows when doing the texture

Every time I try and edit the uv map it all seems to go wrong, I was hoping to be able to keep some of the old textures and just re-paint them, but I think I'm going to have to start completely from scratch in terms of the texture map.

Do you know how to do planar projections so that on your map only one side of the model shows, but when the texture is applied it covers the whole ship?

I know how to do that in 3D Studio MAX and (THANK HEAVENS!) I finally have a working copy of it again after being stuck without it for over a year! If there is a way to convert files from Maya to something 3DS MAX can import, I can try adding a map for you. I personally never spent much time on adding the maps. Usually went pretty quickly.

To Merciless Mark: Now that I have a working copy of 3DS MAX again, I will try to do something with your modified Surprise again. I at least now have access to all the options I should need. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I should be able to convert it to something 3D Max can read. What about VRML2?
I could use accutrans I think that will save to whatever file type 3Dmax uses, but I found that although it writes to .ma for maya it can't read them - weird!!! I have a work around for that though. It might be the same for MAX

I'll have one more crack at sorting the map out, because I'd like to learn how to do it, and if I can't work it out I'll email it to you to have a play with it.

Thanks Pieter

I think 3DS MAX should open VRML2 files, yes. I wished I could help you figuring the texture map out, but, like I said, I only know how to do it in 3DS MAX. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

then again, maybe it might not be such a good idea to use the old skin, seeing as how the skin on it is too severly curved in comparison to the gun ports. if your planning to make a new skin, try and keep the "gun lines" on the gunports.
sounds good, but so you mean that the stern just looks like the normal MOW but without the stern galleries? i think that if that is the case the stern would be too small.
could you show us a pic of the model [like AdmiralKoch]?
it would really clarify things.

I would like to see a pic of the "Victory" (1st Rate SotL) too <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I'm almost done with the rear end of the ship now, but I think that it's gonna take a little longer to get it ingame than I thought... stupid textures <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

lol nice try indeed, it is a nice model like you said and yeah it is probably TOO detailed for POTC same thou as for the remodel: nice
lol

Alright, here's a pic of the new cabin <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
<a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/nicklas101/Cabin.jpg" target="_blank">http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/nicklas101/Cabin.jpg</a>
Tell me what you think.

The stern cabin looks perfect, especially how you captured the "wrap around" effect of it. The balcony part might stick out just a bit too far, but I don't think it's a big deal at all. If this model turns out as good as it looks like it will, you might have to make a proper 74 to go along with it as well :p

and an accurate version of HMS Victory <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> !
being serious, may i add a suggestion that would make this ship look even more like a late 18th- early 19th century battleship?
you see how the stern has a very slight angle? make it a bit more severe and make it so that the stern has the upper quarter deck moving outwards behind the ship even further than it is already, which would increase the angle.

I'm modeling this ship after a model I have of the HMS Agamemnon, it was build in 1781... it's known as Nelson's Favorite ship, here's a bit of history for you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
HMS Agamemnon, a sixty-four gun, third-rate ship-of-the-line-of-battle, was constructed at Buckler's Hard, on the Beulieu river, Hampshire, and launched in 1781. Agamemnon was one of the most famous ships in the Royal Navy, with battle honours including The Saints, Copenhagen, Trafalgar, and the Battle of Santo Domingo. She was commanded by Captain Nelson between 1793 and 1796, during which time he lost the sight in his right eye at the siege of Calvi.

Agamemnon was the first ship-of-the-line Nelson commanded, and also the first in which he raised his broad pennant as Commodore. He transferred his command to the 74-gun H.M.S. Captain, 74, in 1796, in which he took part in the Battle of St Vincent. Nelson always spoke fondly of Agamemnon, and indeed, she is remembered to this day as his favourite ship of all.

Designed by Sir Thomas Slade, the same man who had designed H.M.S. Victory, she was a fast sailer, and a very weatherly ship. Unfortunately, by the time she was stationed on the West India station, her bottom was not in great condition, and during manoeuvres in Maldonado Bay, off the coast of Uruguay, a fluke on one of her anchors penetrated her bottom. All the hands were taken off without loss of life - indeed, she settled very slowly. Divers are currently excavating the recently discovered site of the wreck.

I found that on this website <a href="http://www.prd-digital.com/viewproject.php?id=1" target="_blank">http://www.prd-digital.com/viewproject.php?id=1</a> there are pictures of a very nice model of the HMS Agamemnon there too

I a little question was hanging around in my head, even if it might be not very historically accurate, will you had a rudder wheel on it? it would be wonderful to stand behind a rudder wheel on the deck of that beauty during a massive battle or a storm

Very fine work anyway, keep it up! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

of course I'll add a rudder wheel <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

lol yeah a rudder would make it more real, plus you wouldn't c it turn wat with the waves n all.

The only thing I can tell you right now is that I'm working on the deck, I'll post a screenshot later today, or tomorrow.

YAY <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> !
