New Shipyard Interface?

Heya; Ive just been looking at the EIC game's ship stat pages and realised how much more engaging reading about and seeing the ship is than just seeing it's stats. I appreciate this is a very trivial thing and would probably be quite difficult to put into action, but ive done a quick example of what i mean. aye its mega crap but its just a suggestion! Of course, the next alpha will have the shipyard tuning so it might be different anyway; In which case, disregard this whole idea.

My very poor example:):

That would be a lot of work to recode that page that way, but you definitely have a really interesting idea going on there.

Pirate_KK had some ideas in that direction. In our Development Resources, we have the following interface addition:
<img src="http://piratesahoy.net/build/images/pirate_kk_preview/Shipyard%20Appearance.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
A proper description for the ship type and look can be provided there. Screenshots would be nice too, which might not be <i>that</i> hard to add.
Of course we'd need the actual 213 screenshots for all ships. But that can be done. Just a lot of work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

so in patch 2 or three will we get that sjipyard interface..cos i know im really looking forward to it...how bugggy is it very or acceptable?

As far as I'm aware, the shipyard interface itself actually works fine.
But the Development Resources contain some OTHER content that IS quite buggy.
We might have to seperate the working parts from the buggy parts at some point,
but that is quite a lot of work AND introduces an additional risk for introducing bugs again as well.
After all, the separating process would cause problems if not done well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

ah so what your saying is that there is a load of stuff to be realeased for the next uodate that all needs to be comppleted...i assume then that the features ive seen of the interface, hull painting, ship bonuses and so on all take effect when required??

Those are indeed all included in the Development Resources.
We do have those mods all together and more-or-less available for testing, but there's some pretty bad bugs in it for now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
So that's why none of that has made it into the official Alpha's yet.

why don't u just call the ships from their texture files instead of screenshots?

Because the texture files don't actually look like the ships until they're applied to a 3D model. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Pieter, is your Shiplist with <i>screenshots</i> still online?! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

It's not online anymore, since my website seems to have disappeared. Again. But I do still have it.
I don't think those screenshots can really be used though, since for interface pictures, they'd need to be square. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />
Anyway, since I made so many screenshots myself already, I can say that it isn't THAT much work.
If you make screenshots for a couple of hours per day, you can be done in a week or so. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Well, my friend, i hope ye find yur missing site <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" /> ! Ha-har!

Pieter, I must say I'm elated to see your screen shot and it looks like my idea has already, to some extent been implemented! So there will be an descr. in the central box? That looks very impressive. Hate to be a royal pain, but is there any way i could download this addition and add it to my alpha 9.5? I know its buggy but youve got me all intrigued now! If you wanted historic info/descriptions I could also do some write-ups. Hating to sound full of myself, but as you can see in my above attachment I can write rather 'formally'(tho i know i never do on the boards! heh <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> ) I dont have the internet at home (i have to come on at college <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> ) but have some really brilliant books on the subject. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" />

Thanks, Skye

If you'd be willing to work on those descriptions, that'd be most useful! Otherwise it'd keep saying "Description of Lugger 1". <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
The file including those mods is current available to modders only and does not contain the latest fixes.
This weekend I'll try to include all the latest fixes and release it to public so everybody can give it a try. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Yah thatd be really good cheers Pieter your a diamond! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Will it be called build 14 alpha 9.5.5? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
Ok then Ill see what i can do! I love writing about ships. I know its a bit sad, but i get a great pleasure from writing about guns and ships an history etc. Maybe i should want to be a military historian and not a film cameraman! lol I just didn't want to ask outright in case you already had others on the job. Any particular length to keep it to? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" />

Thanks, Skye

There is indeed a length limit, since it still needs to fit on the page. You can judge it from the screenshot I posted,
but once I released the Development Resources (that is the name I've been using for it) you can test it yourself too.
It's great if you want to do this, because indeed we DIDN'T have anyone on the job. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

So that's roughly 3 lines or 30 words judging by the character size in your screenshot? Ok thanks for your help, Pieter. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" /> Ill post them on here as attachments unless there's an easier/better way of doing it? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Anything that gets them to me is fine: e-mail/FTP/attachment/whatever.

I think that the descriptions should become fairly short, both because of font-size/space reasons,
but also because people aren't going to read really big descriptions. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

At the moment, the descriptions are literally ship-specific. Even skin-specific I think.
That's because the screenshot option isn't added yet.
I'm not sure what we should do in the end...
- Keep things as-is: Skin choosing based on textual desciption
- Small change: Images in "Appearance" interface show skin, while the desciption shows the ship characteristics and some history.
- Large change: Replace ALL ingame ship interface pictures with skin-specific ones; add description to regular ship buying interface

Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter? And if we go with the screenshots... would anybody be willing to make them?
I did it in the past (but not good enough), but it IS doable. I'm not going to make them myself any time soon; I first want the location-specific loading screens done.

Ok then <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I think the small change looks the most suitable to be honest for time be to be honest; it would be a lot of work changing all of them at this stage, though I guess it would maybe need to be done sometime along the line. And as for screenshots, would they need to specific to the ship or just all the same situ/location? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" /> Good luck with the Load Screens i cant wait to see them!

Thanks, Skye

Since the interface shown is mainly to allow you to switch skins, it would be required to show each ship seperately so you can see the different skins.
What do you mean by "situ/location"? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

The loading screens I have made are already in Build 14 Alpha 9.5; soon I will continue with the rest of them. I'm fed up of having no proper consistent style! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

About screenshots, i see it like moored ship in front of some harbour (ship specific maybe)... 2 questions, how to hide HUD and what resolution? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
