New Shipyard Interface?

I think that would be superb; but Ive gotta agree with Pieter; people would rather read it as a short description as oppsed to an essay full; if they want that theyll go on wikipedia. Maybe Morgan's idea of having a short, then a long. Of course, I realise this would take time so I think it'd be better if tehre was just a short? Have I dug myself a hole in saying this? heh <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />o)

Skye

It's a what-do-people-want-to-read thing, but also a how-much-time-does-it-cost-to-do-it-for-all-ships thing.
So I'd suggest you (and anybody else who wants to help) try to write up some short descriptions for all ships,
just so that we have something in place that'll work. Then longer descriptions can always be added later.
But I'd rather end up with short descriptions for all ships than long ones for just a few. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Hell yeah! Thatd be so annoying. Ive done the Hooker, the Ketch and the Cutter as well as the ones in the attachment I posted earlier on in the thread. i know its not many, but ive had a lot on; by hooker, does the name refer to an 'old ship' or the ship type, because all the descrs Ive read refer to it as being a square rigger <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Skye

For the Hooker, Wikipedia just gives "A small fishing boat" as description.
I'm not sure whether Petros actually considered the rigging when he named it a Hooker.

While we're on the subject of ship types, I reckon we should rename a whole bunch of ships types.
Right now there's just too many types and it's confusing.
Manowar, Light Manowar, Heavy Manowar, British Manowar, Fast Manowar, Super Manowar and what else... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />
Would be nice to have a system of ship types that actually makes sense, because right now it's all pretty much random. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Ok; in my book its a 'old, or dis-used type of vessel; normally of the fishing type.' alongside the description thats its most commonly an 18th century coastal fisher with bla bla bla rigging and bla bla bla masts <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Yeah; I think the RN rate system would be a good idea for english ships; i know some are already named after this and i think its the least confusing way of doing it;) Though, of course, theres a lot of small vessels which wouldnt be rated so it may only work to a small extent.

Skye

A rating system for the bigger ships would certainly help. And then apply it to all nations too.
So what if the French didn't call their ships Third Rate; at least we'll know what it means.
For smaller ships, there isn't much confusion: Lugger, Sloop, etc. are fairly straightforward.
The one thing that becomes confusing is that each modded ship type has gotten a different type name.
Once we add screenshots and descriptions, that shouldn't be needed to such extent anymore.

if we're going to call warships 3rd-rates etc., it'll be a lot easier to make discriptions. it's well-documented info.

If nobody has any valid descriptions, we can go ahead and do that. Shouldn't be so hard. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Just a small link, if it can help you there are some descriptions under the models :

Thanks <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Ok then; so do u want me to write the descr's based on the rating system and 'play it by ear' as to which ships are rated? Or should I just keep to the smaller ships and leave the raters till later?

Thanks, Skye

Personally I'd say: Small ships in regular terms, eg. Sloop, Lugger, Cutter, Barque, etc.
Larger ships in rating system: First Rate (Manowar/Endeavour-based ships), Second Rate (Battleship/Lineship), etc.
Not sure about large merchant ships...

At the moment we have about as many ship types as we have ships and every different ship model has a different type name.
I reckon we should group comparable ship models together as being one type, even if the models themselves look different.
Once we get ship-dependent interface-pictures, we won't need the type anymore to let us know which ship model/skin we're buying.
And it'd make it a lot simpler to understand the capabilities of a ship.

Right now we have stuff like:
- Heavy Trader/War Galleon (same model, renamed)
- Light Manowar
- Fast Frigate

For regular players, it's just going to be confusing.

I have added you to the "Modders" member group, which gives you access to the POTC Modding Subforum.
Please refer to <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?s=&showtopic=12986&view=findpost&p=331293" target="_blank">this thread</a> and <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=13298" target="_blank">this thread</a>. They deal with the Different Flags mod that we're finally getting to stabilize.

There's some code by Screwface in the first thread to quickly cycle through all ship types, which could be useful when you end up making screenshots.
Hopefully once you get to doing that, the crashes and pennants will be sorted properly and you'll be able to make nice pictures of up-to-date ships.
In the meantime, it'll help you having a quick look at all ships.

Ok then; I think that code'll help a lot <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> I know what you mean about relying on the type; in fact that is one of the main reasons I started this thread was because of the different models being under the same name. It seemed a waste of good modeling <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Ill carry on with the small ships 'as is' in terms of name and and leave the shots until I know Im taking pics of the correct ship for the correct descr. Ive just had a look at the pennants; looking wonderful! Should I only start on shots once these have been sorted out for all ships, or is it only larger ships they are intended for at the moment?

Sorry to be a pain but the first link didn't work; <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> what's the name of the thread?

Thanks, Skye

Can you please try that first link again? It's working fine for me... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
Thread names are "Development Resources" (sticky, last few pages) and "Flags on ships in B14A9.5 Development Resources".

For screenshots, it's better to wait until we've got the pennants sorted. We're working on those now and will hopefully have the majority done on short term.

To the point of having some models with number appendixes.
This is nice if you know which type and number corresponds to which ship model and texture, but that is something regular players wouldn't know.
For them, too many type names are going to just be confusing.
So if you can group different models together under one type as much as possible, that would be great.
Then eventually the screenshots will explain exactly what the ship looks like and it'll be all much better. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Aye it sure would. I know im thinking super long-run, but are there any plans ever to retail/release the build mod? Im just thinking the guys on here have done sooooo much and worked so hard on the original game and changed it beyond belief, it seems a shame if it isn't played by people who would really want to but dont because they dont hear about it.

Ill wait till the pennants are done then <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

We'll release it on the ModDB and try and promote it any way we can to get people to know about it.
The game itself and the movie license are not owned by us, so any commercial or free on-disc or full download release would be highly illegal. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Hmm yes im no expert on this (trust me! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> ) but if you worked alongside the original studio and promised a percentage of profit, would it still be compltly illegal?

No luck with the link. Then again, not many links on here do work. I think its cos i use mac <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> .Id quite like to add some descr's onto the wiki. How do i go about doing this?

You do have editing access on the Wiki. If you don't know how it works, asks on the Wiki subforum or in SuperDurnius' thread.
We haven't been able to contact Bethesda/Disney who own the rights. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Hm. Theres a real nice fictional descr here for the sloop; who here wrote it? Its not historical, but i like the way it's worded and if we used the larger page format as Pieter suggested earlier on, there may be an opportunity to integrate some descr's along this line into the game. Just a suggestion! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Ive just added one of my descr's to the wiki. How was it wanted? all Ive done is chucked it on there but did you want each ship to have its own page with picture and everything my above link to the sloop has, or did you just want a list with description and stats?
