New Starting Characters

Croaker

Page 39 of the manual states that by editing (RESOURCE\INI\texts\english\HeroDescribe.txt), you can add custom officers to the game for you to find and recruit.

What it doesn't tell you in the manual is that you can also use this file to add main heros to the game.

hero_qty - number of main heroes
ps_hero_qty - number of pseudo-main characters (there may be shown as quest characters in the game, only male main characters are present)

These numbers are initially...

hero_qty {3}
ps_hero_qty {18}

The first three entries in the list are...

Peter Blood
Jan Stance
Diego Espinoza

So, by changing, hero_qty {3}, to hero_qty {18}, all 18 of the characters in the list become selectable as main heroes when you start a new game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Additionally, you can edit any of the heroes or add more. Changing heroFace and heroModel, you can use any model in the game. Models are located in (Playlogic\Age of Pirates 2\RESOURCE\MODELS\Characters). So, you can be a fat, bald, merchant if you want. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I havn't found the heroFace files yet, but I am currently enjoying playing the game as the Devlin Blaze model, which I like much more than the main 3.

Yeah, I met that one in the pub, he seems to be the same model as the Blaze from AOP, although the name is different (there it was Blaze Sharp).
You can find the face files in textures/interfaces/portraits and textures/battle_interface/portraits.

Not without re-rigging the animations, or so the word is on the modding forums, IIRC.

Very nice find, I think I'm going to be playing with this file for awhile until I find the right character for me...btw, I wouldn't mind having a female char as an option. If anyone finds the char model and portrait for a good female pirate please post here.

Hmm...I must be doing something wrong, as I can't even get my main character's name to change

Thanks!

There are some really cool, unique models in there. I have not tried them all, but I did dry one of the girl models and it had some graphical glitches in the sword animation. I havn't tried them yet, but playing as an undead pirate would be fun.

I've seen some Russian mods where they have made a buch of cool women pirates. While the whole mod would be in Russian and likely not compatable with our version of the game, getting the model file and putting in in the character directory should make it selectable.

I'd also like to find a modelviewer for these .gm files. It would be fun to make some custom portraits or models.

Im having a major problem...everytime I change one thing in the HeroDescribe.txt file the game doesn't allow the changes. Once I start a new game I dont have any chars or profession to choose from and the background picture is of Beatrice from AoP:CT

Oh damn. I wish I knew what you changed. I suppose I should say, back up your HeroDescribe.txt file, before making changes. Worst case you can back up your save directory and reinstall.

One idea is to check your spelling carefully. If your game is looking for a model file that doesn't exist, then it can bug out. Also, make sure you keep the {} around the names and dont put the .gm

Example: You are making a new custom character in slot 19. If you want to use the Devlin model, the line should read.

heroModel_19 {Devlin}

not...

heroModel_19 {Devlin.gm}
or
heroModel_19 Devlin

We can make AoP characters work in PotC with their AoP animation. Should work the same way in reverse too. Theoretically.

I did backup the file...and when I undo everything I did everything is fine.

I was typing everything in correctly, but it just won't accept the changes for some reason. As you said in your first post, changing hero_qty {3} to hero_qty {18} should make all the chars playable. I tried that *one* change and it did everything I said in my last post.

Hmm...I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that my files are located in (RESOURCE\INI\texts\<b>russian</b>\HeroDescribe.txt)

Well I fixed it somehow...perhaps it was the fact that even though I changed and saved the file with the new parameters...I kept it open as I started the game, and that must have messed it up. Tried closing the file after saving the changes and it seems to work now :p

Now I can continue my work to find a good character! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Actually, mine says \russian\ too. I guess it's something they forgot to change. It says \english\ in the manual, but there is no \english\ folder.

The only thing I can suggest is using another text editor than the one you are using. That simple change should work unless your edited file is changing format of lines. Also make sure you are changing it in the right place. There is a bunch of coding stuff in the front of the file. The line you want to change is directly above Peter Blood's info.

Good luck

Pinned for now, I'll move this one to the modding forums a bit later today.

Good find folks!

Here is the link from the <b>CoAS Hardcore Edition 1.2.3</b> post in the modding forums. This is the thing I had remembered seeing and have been looking for all day.

Here are some examples of the new models this Russian mod adds.

<img src="http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/6472/81bd492232b6.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
<img src="http://s60.radikal.ru/i169/0904/40/6e767b347a8ft.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

As soon as I get home from work, I am going to download this mod. With any luck, putting these model files in our model directory should make them accessable.

I´ll love to see a translation/porting of this mod to the international (PROGRAM folder open) version.... I´ve seen in this Forum two of the users mentioned on the mod´s post: AlexusB and Eddy.... both of them are quite good guys (also good sense of humour if I can say), it´ll be amazing if this porting can be achieved with cooperation of the users...
My russian is ZERO... "vodka", "Dos vedanya tovarich!!" and stop right there... I only can offer my help in spanish translation once english is finished, no much more...
But IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!!!

<b>BEST REGARDS</b>

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" /> It WORKS!!! 100% animation compatable female pirate. I found one of the three from the example image above. Im sure the others are in there somewhere too.

<a href="http://img191.imageshack.us/i/yoko.jpg/" target="_blank"><img src="http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/9629/yoko.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

I downloaded the russian mod. There are a lot of new stuff there! I copied the following files to my Age of Pirates 2 folders.

\CoAS_1.2.3_HE\RESOURCE\Textures\Characters\YokoDias.tga.tx
\CoAS_1.2.3_HE\RESOURCE\animation\YokoDias.ani
\CoAS_1.2.3_HE\RESOURCE\animation\YokoDias.an
\CoAS_1.2.3_HE\RESOURCE\MODELS\Characters\YokoDias.gm

I then opened my \Age of Pirates 2\RESOURCE\INI\texts\russian\HeroDescribe.txt and changed entry #17 to have the following values...

heroName_18 {Yoko}
heroLastname_18 {Dias}
heroNameGen_18 {Yoko}
heroLastnameGen_18 {Dias}
heroNameDat_18 {Yoko}
heroLastNameDat_18 {Dias}
heroFace_18 {26}
heroModel_18 {YokoDias}
heroType_18 {Adventurer}
heroNation_18 {Spain}
sex_18 {woman}
animation_18 {YokoDias}
hero_18 {I am woman, hear me roar!}

Now the hero portrait is wrong here, but I'm sure there is a nice custom portrait in there somewhere. I need to get the right image viewer or just trial and error to find it.

This obviously a gift to Oberleutnant. Ill be digging around for a suitable male pirate. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Oh it was actually pretty easy to find the portrait. Trial and error, but there are only a dozen new portraits in the mod.

There are 4 folders...

\CoAS_1.2.3_HE\RESOURCE\Textures\INTERFACES\PORTRAITS\64
\CoAS_1.2.3_HE\RESOURCE\Textures\INTERFACES\PORTRAITS\128
\CoAS_1.2.3_HE\RESOURCE\Textures\INTERFACES\PORTRAITS\256

and

\CoAS_1.2.3_HE\RESOURCE\Textures\BATTLE_INTERFACE\PORTRAITS....

not sure what the 64,128 and 256 mean.

Anyway Yoko's portrais are the _243. _242 are the redhead girl in the promo pic. So in the above code change...

heroFace_18 {26}

to

heroFace_18 {243}

HOT HOT HOT HOT pics! I can't wait to find these 3 officers ingame and set them as my accompanying fighters.

<a href="http://img31.imageshack.us/i/yoko2.jpg/" target="_blank"><img src="http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/9016/yoko2.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

Very awesome Croaker, thanks! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I will be downloading this and checking it out as soon as I get home from work as well...now I just need to do some digging and find all the right files for that redheaded one on the right :p

Im not much of a modder and I don't have much experience with AoP, considering that CoAS is my first AoP experience, but im gonna dig through this mod and see what else I can find that may be of use to us.

Looks fun, would love to see someone find a way to port POTC characters in the future, if that happens it would be a possitive step into further modding COAS.

I really must say that im disappointed in the modders who made the animations for the females...they're cheats!

The redhaired one (Angellica I believe) and Yoko Dias each have a tweaked animation that lets them cheat while fighting...try the right click swing for Angellica and try any swing with Yoko, you'll notice a major increase in speed. Even with the starting weapon you can basicly take down anyone in Impossible difficulty by just spamming the right click swing! The only one that wasn't tweaked seems to be Danielle...and she's a little too indecent to be walking around town with for RPing. Bah, Russians and their cheating/partially nude models :p I wouldn't mind trying to input Beatrice's model from AoP:CT if anyone could send me the model and animation files.

By the way, I haven't tried it yet, but there are a lot of miscellaneous files in that mod that are written in english and could probably successfully overwrite the ones in our game...so we might be able to benefit from some of the other tweaks that CoAS Hardcore Edition 1.2.3 offers. I won't get to test any tonight, it's too late and I have other priorities...but please share your thoughts if any of you try. Oh, and there are also some russian files in our game, so just make sure that both files are in the same language before you overwrite <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
