Now who wants revised flags?

but the corvette model is already over used, every other ship you see on the ocean is modeled after a corvette. and the stock corvette model in the game itself isn't exactly the most authentic =P

if ya guys want to do the final stages of the golden age of piracy, it's gonna have to be prior to 1730s and lose the napoleonic theme and golden age of sail. if ya want to do the golden age of sail and the napoleonic theme, then the US has to be represented, wich means 1776 to early 1800s.

course if the plan is to have two seperate theme mods then it won't even matter >.>

and as for the clipper anyways, I guess it won't matter either way, but my opinion, for as llittle as it counts on this forum, is if yer gonna put a clipper in the game, ya might as well put in a <i>clipper</i> with skyrakers and teh whole deal rather than put in something that hardly does the ship justice just for the sake of having a ship labled clipper in the game.

well, if the age would be 1812, making an old clipper wouldn't be nessesary. anyway, i wouldn't mind having another corvette. besides, the rigging is quite a lot different than that of the original corvette. what i noticed is that the old clippers are EXACTLY the same as the curretn corvette, except for the rigging. (maybe one or two extra sails above the current ones, and the other sails being slightly smaller)

as i suggested elsewhere, it would be possible to make a proper clipper out of the corvette, without making it look like corvette at all. the collision box and the walkfile of the corvette could be used (although you would still be able to walk up onto an invisible cabin) and then redising the visible portion of the corvette to turn it into a clipper.

we really need to get some more modellers here, get rid of all the stock ships, or most of them and do high quality, realistic counterparts. i mean seriously some of the stock ships just feel like floating bath tubs instead of a fine trim seabird.

maybe we could see if some of the ship modelers over at PoTBS forums would like to share their models with us?

Yes, we need to get them over here!

A clipper sounds fun! I'd like to see them used in-game!

And how did you get it to say what nationality a ship was in the yard and make it really that type? The same basic code could be used to make sure you don't see the british using that green Dutch trader, or the French using a British seventy-four.
I think that the main goal of B15 should be a completely new set of ships, reorganized, modeled, etc. The mess we have right now is very overwhelming. And when we make these new ships, name them accordingly. Scrap the "Frigate MM' thing and try this:

"British Frigate" You know exactly what you're getting. (Inzane's Surprise, not the stock ship.)
"Spanish Third Rate" Same deal.
"Dutch EIC Ship" Its a big green merchant! (Eh, Peiter! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />)

And the ones that look OK need to be re-done too. The Corvette looks like a 32 gun Napoleonic frigate! A corvette was the French counterpart of an English sloop-of-war, not a frigate.

This is pretty much what the goal of the P&E mod was, to do what everyone here is starting to think about.

I say we stretch things slightly: The year is 1776, piracy was dwindling with the rise of navies. But the Barbary pirates held an empire on the North African coast and there were these rebels, pirates, if you will, that called themselves patriots...
So, its pretty cool, being an American is like being a pirate attempting to form alliances with his fellow freebooters and call themselves a fleet. Privateering was also rampid, and once the revolution (which would make for an exciting quest!) is over, you can go on privateering, stay in the navy, or go pirate... anything.

Gosh, I have to stop here, there's so much I want to say and I can't organize my thoughts... so many! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

EDIT: I took these screenshots in my game <b>Privateer's Bounty: Age of Sail II</b>. This game is the closest thing to what we want to make here, only difference is that this game is a tactical game that handles more like Age of Empires. But if we could get ships in PotC that looked like this, with more detail like those in PotBS, with their respective paintjobs for each nation... WOW!

All the ships!
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/all_ships.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
The 100 gun ship and 74 gun ship.
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/100_74.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
The 64 and 44 gun ships.
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/64_44.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
The frigate, brig-of-war, schooner, and cutter.
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/36_18_12_10.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

And we can add other ships of course. These would be the base ship types needed for and warfare, then come the private yachts, barques, sloops (not military.), luggers, xebecs... then the merchant <i>clippers</i> (<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />), corvettes, Indiamen (which replaced the galleon as supreme trader), and other various vessels.
Ships like the galeoth, flute, galleon, pinnace, etc. wouldn't be included anymore if it was Napoleonic. All sailplans would go from the old bowsprit and mizzen:
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/old.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
to the new:
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/new1.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Everything in the Napoleonic design was to build a simple, fast, and lethal looking vessel whereas the old way wass to build it big and extravagant with tall sterns and ornate trimmings.
I know that most of this has been said before, just felt that I had to stress upon it. Just makes it feel organized and all laid out... :p

And of course, we could include a toggle that switches between this and what we have at present. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Yup, i know alot of people put alot of work into the repaints and the redo of stock models, but we want the build mod to be immersive dont we? if we still do, then ALL the stock ships should go and be replaced with accurate ships of the age of sail, imagine the immersion factor, especially when mixed with CannonFX.

I also think we shouldnt be so afraid of high amount of polygons, i mean, take the suprise for instance, it got bugged, and has an insane polycount of at least 100000 or something like that, for semi-new systems its not a problem(my rig being 4 years old with a AGP graphic card update)

If we can get by that, and as i said, get the PoTBS UC content ship modelers to share their models with us, we will have a vast amount of ships to put in the game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

your idea with getting the POTBS models is an awesome idea and I doubt they'd say no.

now just a question, are you guys able to just take any ship model and modify it to make it work in the game?

I know this has been said before but anyway...
If you want to work on transposing PotC in another time period, the best toogle - because obviously a toogle is needed there - would be to choose at the begining of the game in which time period you are, even before the choose-your-main-character interface. Characters models would be added a specific time period or not. And reading what CCC posted recently, we can even change how the land locations look like in different time period, as you can tell some 3D objects to appear or not - using this kind of thing :
<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->AddGeometryToLocation(LocationID, "smg");<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

how about placing the toggle in the menu when you start a new game?

heh. at first, i thought that the lower pic was a severely tricked-out sloop. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> i think that with the clippers, it has to be taken in mind that they where not warships, but where designed to be a ship that could outrun any other ship. it did have some cannons, but not much, as it didn't need them. it would be a purely defensive and ultimate prey-vessel, likely not be used by the player unless he intends to be a trader.

you did give me an idea though: how about being an american? you wouldn't really be part of any nation at all, making it easier to do what you want to do. not in a literal sense, but i've often seen that players stick to the situation they begin with. by being absolutely neutral, the players would more likely explore everything the game has to offer.

If we are going through with the rewriting of the main quest to change it to be a more PotC-like story, we MUST rename Redmond into Port Royal. In any case: I think 100% historical realism and accuracy is not possible. The golden age of piracy ended before the Napoleonic age, cursed pirates and Kraken's don't exist, Port Royal was destroyed, etc. I think we should try to make the most interesting game world as possible, even if it isn't 100% realistic. I would like to have a game world WITH Port Royal, Jack Sparrow, cursed pirates, the Kraken, but also a Napoleonic war, nation-specific colour-schemes on ships, Napoleonic uniforms, changing nation relations and big navies and even occasional American ships. The world of the PotC films don't seem to be set in a specific year anyway. It is more the spirit of an era that seems to be the time setting and not an exact year.

Adding dozens of newly modeled ships would be awesome, of course, but it's not exactly realistic to expect this to happen any time soon. I sincerely doubt it would ever happen at all. It'd be great, of course, but we need to be realistic. I'm afraid we need to make do with what we have instead of hope to replace everything. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

SO I say 1748. America had specific ships, there were specific uniforms for each nation etc. But I think you could better use the skins of the derringer skins if you want to resemble POTC!

I still think the ability to chose your time period at the begining would be the best. The game would stay really open that way.
I agree that 1748 is a good date, really appropriate for an interesting game, but if you choose 1748, what would become Petros' ships? The armor mod?... Personnaly I like the XVI, the Spanish Empire in which the Sun never set... Did some of you saw "the SeaHawk", with Errol Flynn for exemple? Why would we turn this game into a PotC movie trailer, what it wasn't when it was released?
Is this time period system that hard to add ingame?

you answered your own question actually. petros' skins would be saved by the time period toggle.

I'm considering making the Red ensign for the English, instead of the blue, since red was the color of the caribbean squadron.

Red would be good. Red also meant a single ship not belonging to a particular squadron or fleet... a red ensign and tricolor pennant.
I say that being American is an excellent idea, for the reasons that Morgan Terror gave. And I say that 100% accuracy isn't necessary, its supposed to be a fun game. It'd be cool to join Jack Sparrow of the <i>Black Pearl</i> with your USS <i>Constitution</i> (as weird as it sounds! And we have GOT to get an "Old Ironsides" superfrigate model ingame!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> and fight the <i>Flying Dutchman</i> and the Kraken. And the Napoleonic uniforms look awesome too, all the gold epaulets and the like! Really, all you have to do is take the base Derringer RN captain skin and change it up a bit... blue lapels for Americans, red for Dons, white for British, change cuffs and pockets up to match navy and rank. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
And I don't think its impossible, just shoot for B15 release. Its come along pretty well already!

Bermuda Sloop - Got it, just a couple of reskins for other navies.
Schooner - Same as above.
Brig-of-War - Same as above. (Must use the Packet Brig, looks so amazing!!!)
Sloop-of-War - Same as above, thanks to Capt Hawk!
Light Frigate - Inzane's Surprise, just a couple reskins.
Medium Frigate - Use the Corvette, reskin it accordingly.
Heavy Frigate - We can dream. Let's hope someone finishes a model or a new guy comes along. This one might not happen, but it could!
Third Rate (Light) - Fearless, just reskins.
Third Rate - Is Admiral Koch still working on that Napoleonic Battleship? Any news?
First Rate - Well, we got that HMS <i>Victory</i> comming along... Huzzah!

That's the base set of models there, throw in the sloop, yacht, barque, xebec, lugger, Black Pearl, Flying Dutchman, East Indiaman (Do we have one? Thought I saw one on the FTP.) and you get 18 base models, all but one are made and in progress. Then you have 7 nations: UK, Fr, Sp, Pu, Ho, USA, and pirates. So we'll have 126 ships total if we do just one skin of each ship for each nation. And they can be organized pretty well if we set a standard for naming them rather than just "Weathered Frigate4_44 MM by So and so." So what is that? Set a standard of "Heavy_Frigate_Navy_England" or "Yacht_France" or "Third_Rate_Navy_Spain" or "East_Indiaman_Holland", then you got your uniques like "Black_Pearl" or "Wicked_Wench", etc.

So most of them are just reskins. We'd also have to tweak them by adding ensigns and giving them a single, long streaming pennant on the main. And I don't think reskins are quite as impossible, more people do that.

to be honest im getting very very very veeeeery bored with reskins of the same old.. in alot of cases crappy stock models. other games got tons of modelers for their mod projects, why are we so lacking?

No idea... you'd think that the top grossing movie of our age would bring in more modders than the next Age of Empires or something... (Which i don't get, what's there to mod in that game, won't change it a whole lot.) Guess the better part of the PotC fan base are Depp and Bloom gals, not Age of Sail nuts like us...
Wish we were like Star Wars, there's a gazillion Star Wars games out there and something like four Star Wars modders to our one... =P

but i think that if were going to start replacing ships, were really going to start having to do it, instead of just adding new ships as a ...new ship. i mean the suprise when it came i thought it could replace the stock PoTC frigate, didnt happen, the stock frigate is still in there.

I'd try ship modelling myself, but i dont have maya so i cant really export them properly.

I like the idea of a toggle. red ensign for the british would be preferable,

and is bizzare and completely off the wall as this may sound, but just an idea, has anyone considered a story quest that could involve the ships from different time periods, like the constitution working with jack sparrow or something. it seems Napoleon has obtained some super weapon, and he intends to use it to conquer the entire world, I dunno, say some tome from the city of atlantis. I dunno, say there is this tome, I dunno, say it holds the power to wield the bermuda triangle, and say the bermuda triangle is a cross roads in the time stream, so the ships that dissapeer don't really dissapeer they just get lost in another time. So Napoleon has this tome and now he can send ships back in time to fix mistakes in sea battles like the battle of Trafalgar, and now he's wreaking havoc, conquering the world, including america like the mad man he is, and what's worse, his activities are unraveling the very fabric of time wich would destroy the world, So anyways the world is in ruins, america is now the dominion of france, so is england, and constitution is one of hte few ships left out there still to stand up to france. So Constitution is still out there just unleashing hell on all french shipping like a pirate, and chases Napoleon's ship down, wich is carrying the president of the former united states in chains back to france, there's a british ship that constitution has teamed up with as well, one of the other few survivors, and they're chasing this french ship, and enter a fog, when they come out, the battle ensues, they win, know nothing of hte tome though or what Napoleon was doing, but now Napoleon is in chains and the president is rescued. but is badly injured and they think his ramblings about a tome and time travel are just the result of his seffering wounds. So napoleon's ship, wich is too badly damaged is scuttled without them thinking twice. So the all sail back to Kingston, only to find out that Kingston is not Kingston, it's port royal, a series of events take place and they realise they're back in time, and now without the tome. Napoleon is thrown in the dungeon, but it's not lost on the two captains, or the governor of port royal, for that matter, that the tome, wich was recovered some hundred fifty years or so into the future, should still be at the place it was recovered.

So the british conspire against the Constitution, try to sieze the ship, the americans escape (unfortunately so does napoleon) but are now hunted by the british navy, they make for tortuga, become pirates as they try to think of how to find the tome before the british find out where it's located or Napoleon some how gets to it first and leaves them marooned in the late 1600s. So they befriend Jack Sparrow and the black pearl, who decides to help them, obviously because he sees a way to profit on it himself, they go up river, get sent on a variety of quests to find various atlantian artifacts, Napoleon does get to a french colonie and manages to some how convince the governor of his story, english spies figure out what the french are up to, so ya got the english, the french and the pirates all looking for these artifacts wich would be needed to obtain the tome. So ya got all these skirmishes, the constitution out pirating french and english ships looking for the artifacts they recovered first, going on treasure hunts, perhaps even the result of one of the treasure hunts involves the earthquake that destroys port royal =D so they have all these wild swashbuckling adventures, and at the end have a massive battle between the pirates of the caribbean, the british navy adn the french navy with everyone against everyone else, at wich point they then go and do their last treasure hunt, either outwit jack or convince him that the tome is going to destroy the fabric of time and thus everyone including him if it's continually used the way it is, and then the constitution sets off for the bermuda triangle, to use it one last time to get back to their own time. Wich they do, going back just before napoleon had obtained the tome fixing the time stream, somehow the magic of the tome includes merging the would be two constitutions and two presidents and two of every crewman on the constitution that there would be, fix the time line and of course the story is never told because nowone would believe them anyways, the tome is tossed over board or mysteriously dissapeers, perhaps leaving you to wonder if history is doomed to repeat itself anda the end.

of course this is way too massive and epic for a quest like that to be actually programmed, but it's early in the morning, the idea popped in my head when JPJ said he'd like to see the constitution working with jack sparrow, and if anything perhaps it'll amuse you all to read the outline of the story i juse conjoured >.>

no kidding, but not cause of it's outlandishness, it's no more goofy or outlandish than any of the pirates of the caribbean movies. and like I said in my original post, wasn't actually being serious, john paul wanted to see constitution sailing along side the black pearl, and thus my brain came up with a scenerio that would rationalise such a situation. because if something doesn't make sense to me, it vexes me and I obsess about it.

wich really brings up another ranting topic, just like with video games, why is it that they can't seem to make a decent pirate movie? any attempt at a serious movie like cuttthroat island bombs (mainly cause they try to follow pirate hollywood cliches while trying to be serious), any goofy and completely outlandish movie like potc does great, for the layman, but is well, goofy and outlandish >.>

. They should make a movie about bartholomew roberts. that would be a very entertaining movie and it would actually be intelligent (what's not to love about a guy who took it personal that a local government actually tried to put an end to his reign of piracy and as a result, takes a merchant ship, goes right up aside their governor's man of war, takes the man of war and hangs the governor from his own yardarm? now that's entertaining XD). vs guys running around with lots of eye make up fighting skeletons and using really bad impersenations of long john silver <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sleep.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="-_-" border="0" alt="sleep.gif" /> real pirates are so much cooler than disney pirates le sigh
