Pirate Festival!

The link in post #8 still works and seems current. Perhaps you could find something a little closer. :drunk

Hmmm. That one being held in Toronto might be doable if I could find an excuse for heading out that way. :woot Thanks for the link! :onya

Here is a working(for now) link to pics from previous years: http://img571.imageshack.us/g/p6200062vf.jpg/

No, but there be pirates and such in California! :trio Over 30,000 people showed up last year, but only a little over 2,600 were in period clothing. :j2

But there will be gatherings at Nevis and the Caymans in October and November.:nerbz

Arr! :gday Still recovering. A little worse for wear.:j1 Pictures still in the camera. He he. We got our picture taken a few times. There were some big lenses on those things!

High points.

We were in one of the tents where they were selling ale. (IPA is my favorite.) There was a real mermaid in the back, a sailor was playing his mandolin off to the side, and the serving wenches were getting green chests because we were leaving our tips in their cleavage. :j2 Fine outstanding young women they were. Then one of the entertainers wandered in and started singing. Some of us joined in.

What do you do with a drunken sailor
What do you do with a drunken sailor
What do you do with a drunken sailor
Earl-i in the mornin....

When they were firing the cannons, and flintlocks also, we could feel the concussion in our ears, chests, and even feet. The cannons were small. 4 pounders tops. :boom

I talked to a sailor. 20 years before the mast. He pointed out one ship he crewed on. It was a single mast 83 footer. I asked if it was difficult to sail. He hesitated, and then said it was a finger chopper. I looked, and he still had all of his. :j2
We then talked about local races. I mentioned how the race out to the Farrallons and back is dangerous because of the heavy seas, and he said that one race up and down the coast had to be cancelled because they kept losing so many sailors. :nerbz

There were more and better gear being worn this year. Methinks the fellow in armor got pretty hot.

There was a decent breeze this year and the ships were moving out right smartly, and tacking crisply with little sail luffing. :onya

Oh, and this fellow showed up again.

Seen in the newspaper today:
Why are they pirates? They just aaarrr...

Thousands of pirates smash world record in Penzance
This is the moment over 8,700 people descended on Cornish seaside town Penzance to smash the world record for the largest number of pirates in one place.
Fittingly, the record was broken as the pirates lined the promenade in Penzance, Cornwall, echoing the famous Gilbert and Sullivan score.
A total of 8,734 turned out to top the previous world record of 6,166 set in Hastings last year.
The pirate gathering was part of the Golowan Festival to celebrate the traditional feast of St John.
The full article is here. The reason I posted the scan of the newspaper page itself is what else is on the same page. Zombies and pirates together!

Zombies and pirates together...... What's that about mad dogs and Englishmen? :shoot:

We were the largest pirate festival in the world, for maybe two months. The rumors are that something like 38,000 people came through the gates in 2 days. But a great time was had by all.

It be June again and the largest pirate Festival in North America is this weekend. Arr arr mateys. Arr arr. :aar

Heat wave! It was 97degrees Farhenheit (37 C) with no wind. There was no shade either. I was at my limit and my wife went past hers. We left early and as we were walking away she said she was getting chills. Then the ambulances began arriving for those who did not get out in time. The air conditioned car helped and the air conditioned house helped more, but we both fell asleep/passed out soon after getting home. Dunno if we will go back today. Jack Sparrow (he is a very good imitation) was there and he was looking very red in the face from the heat.

Woah, that sounds like a nasty heat wave! Good thing you escaped it, then.
I think I'd melt in 37 degree heat over here, where anything over 20 is tropical. xD

Today is much much better. There was a decent breeze! 13,000 showed up yesterday and more than twice that number showed up today. The tall ships were moving with great gusto as the wind was strong abeam both east and west.
It is great to be stuck in the middle of so many kindred spirits.

We used to have a certain feline prowling around here that reported a bit on these types of gatherings from time to time. In fact, I would love to see someone posting them on the main news page(hint, HINT!

), unfortunately, I just really don't have the time to track down all the info though.

Well, I can tell you that San Diego's Festival of Sail is August 31 - September 3 and that Dana Point's Tall Ships Festival is September 7-9. Not exactly pirate festivals, but there'll be tons of real tall ships there, including the movie Surprise which is moored in San Diego. They also have Star of India, the oldest actively sailing merchantman in the world. Spirit of Dana Point and Pilgrim will be present at both, and both will be freshly painted.

A separate line of thought: The guys from San Diego Maritime last year were refreshing. They all had accurate Napoleonic RN clothing without a pirate cliche in sight.

Edit: Dana Point and San Diego.

Ah that will be a fine sight to see. All we have is a couple of schooners.

I was surprised to see that the links in posts #8 & 11 still work.

That it will.
Here's Legendary Spider's video from last year:

I'm actually one of the four guys sitting in Pilgrim's jibboom netting. I have one particularity good picture that I'll post tomorrow.

Hastings had their Pirate Day again:

'Pirate Day' was a great success on Sunday 22 July with 14 231 pirates being recorded by the Guinness Book of Records.
In addition, a real pirate wedding took place in Hastings Town Hall. Not only were the bride and groom and all the guests dressed as pirates, but the registrar and our own staff were as well!

Ahh it be that time of year again. :cheers

Unfortunately we are getting too old for this shit. It used to be we would be waiting at the gate to get in when they opened and be among the last to leave when we were escorted out by the local yokel "undercover" cops. Now we get there late and leave early due to simply not having the physical stamina to hang in there. :pirate07:
This is especially disappointing since this year it is better than ever with a higher ratio of those wearing period clothes to tourists.
