Pirates 2004 - The Graphics.

Agrred for sure, i think most people are saying what they are because we were all sure this would me a immersive type game ( ala morrowind ) But in saying that i agree we should wait a bit, William will be getting a good look at E3 and with anyluck bring sme stuff back aswell :cheeky

I make a comment about them staying away from realistic graphics because of poor Patrician sales in another thread, but now that I think about it, perhaps they want to appeal to Monkey Island fans as well (since that series took a turn for the comic book look in later sequels also).

I still dislike them.

:woot and welcome aboard, Eobet! Pull up a keg, have a seat, and have a couple on us! :cheers

The Pirates graphics look great in action, Eobet! I wasn't too sure about the "comic book look" either, but I was sold after personally seeing the game demonstrated. It looks like it'll be a lot of fun. :woot :dio

Thank you! :woot

Mmm... I wonder if Pirates! will be "just a game"... or rather, a mass audience targeted thing (like Britney Spears... oh, what an evil comparison xD: ), which leaves the realism/history buffs to play Sea Dogs 2 and Port Royale 2?

Still... life will be tough (or expensive). Port Royale 2 seems most appealing to me, but it's got a lot (A LOT) of trading (which I have Patrician 3 for anyway), and Sea Dogs 2 will probably still lack a visible crew, proper broad side cannon salvoes and I know that it has a confirmed lack of interesting duels (same sad clicky thing as in POTC), but absolutely lovliest graphics, and Pirates! will have the nostalgic value, and hopefully interesting duels and quests.

Ho hum. Good thing that the original Pirates! is still very much playable, and without any faults! :cheers

<!--`QuoteBegin-eobet`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(eobet)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Patrician 3[/quote]Do you like it? Have you ever played "Uncharted Waters New Horizons"? I was looking at Patrician the other day in the store and wondering if it was similar... (well, in a much more updated version, LOL!)

That's the SNES game with card elements, isn't it?

The thing about Patrician 3 and Port Royale (2) is that you never see your main character, and you often end up with such a large fleet (or rather, large amounts of fleets) that you feel detached from the game. It's more like empire building (though a la Sim City) which is fun, but they end up being glorified spread sheets where you just monitor your incomes.

The first few days/week with Patrician and Port Royale is absolute bliss, however. So whenever I play those games, I always restart often, because the beginning is the most fun (since you actually create a business empire, there's no "dividing the plunder" in the games).

Ok. That was incredibly `off-topic`, sorry.

Back to bashing the Pirates! graphics now! xD:

I always restart often, because the beginning is the most fun

Yup, im the same, ive got PR on my hd now, and i always find the start the most fun, usually to the first million after that it really dosnt metter to much.

But ive always seen Patrician and PR to be good, ...part time games, ki9nd of the game you play in between your main game, for example ill play PR2 in between Pirates! sort of thing

honestly, i dont care about the graphics even if its "cartoonie". as most people said, its the gameplay that counts. i might upgrade our pc so that me and my son can play the games ;)

I personally think that the graphics look relatively good, and as someone else said they have a certain artistic flair to them that I think is good.
I personally am just looking for a game that is fun to play, and not entirely realistic, and if they can achieve that through the visuals then that's ok by me.

As i said before in another thread, i think...

The graphics are atcually growing on me the more i look at them, the close up 3d map starts to show of the 3d engine much better, as per the screenys will took at E3

I think it will be a highly playable game, but i still want to get some answers on the modding side of it

If what people have been saying about it being done using the Morrowind engine, then I can almost assure you 100% that it will be moddable, and that all that will probably need to be done is a modified edtior to let the new functions be used, that's all that SHOULD have to be done, but then again they may not want anyone to mod. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":huh" border="0" alt="huh.gif" />

Yeah, i was thinking about that, i cannot see why not though, its a single player only game so you would image they would promote it. The possibilites are huge for it aswell. Just depends on how much effort they want to put into it, Civ had a game editor i think, i also think it was after a few years and releases they did it though

I definitely dont hope that they try to appeal to the 'monkey island fans' with the cartoon graphics..... Do the MI fans like those graphics? I doubt that....

No matter what the videos looks really intresting and since I havent been into a game for almost two years now I hope it will be fun.... cause then yopu will be hooked no matter what....

Actually, I avoided that issue in my post... I know that when King's Quest wen't cartoony, nearly all fans loathed it (including me). Though I haven't heard similar reactions for the MI series, they could very well exist (I only played the first and second). But MI wasn't that realistic from the start either, so I'm not sure how else they could have done the game at that time.

Today, however, with games like POTC, there is no excuse for not making totally immersive graphics. I mean, in the original Pirates! you <i>were there!</i> I can't see myself getting deep into the new title. The cartoon graphics detatches me from the gaming world. It will probably be just a game, which you have fun with and then put aside after awhile.

Not something you live and breathe, like in the old days. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

If the gameplay will rock I believe it will be something you live and breathe.....

although I share your critics regarding the graphics.

I totally agree with DJ1. If you play the game and have fun (derived far more from gameplay than graphics) you will be immersed. As it is, the "cartoony" graphics are closer to a `high-quality` animated film production than, say, the Teletubbies, so it's not like they actually suck.

Anyone `pre-ordered` yet? Keith, any chance on sweet talking a discount out for Atari for the `long-standing` members of Pirates Ahoy! and obvious advocates of the pirate genre? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Actually sampow thats a good idea, I/William will emaili Jeff to see if we can get a PA! preorder discount. give me a couple of days on it and see what comes up <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

just before i embark on this quest, is there actually a bit of intrest in this from anyone else or is sampow the only progressive PA! member here <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Hi eobet,

You guys crack me up. In the original Pirates!, "you were there?" Have you reminded yourself of the graphics to the original Pirates! recently?
<a href="http://www.`pirates-game`.com/pirates/legacy.php?pg=3" target="_blank">http://www.`pirates-game`.com/pira...legacy.php?pg=3</a>

The original Pirates! was so immersive because of the gameplay and because it fueled your `story-telling` and your imagination. The new one is no different.

Walking around the E3 floor -- I think William and Catalina can attest to this -- you saw game after game with the same modelled characters, similar animations, the same color pallettes... they all blended together after a while. Many people commented to me how Pirates! looked so fresh, with its vibrant Caribbean colors, its exaggerated characters, and its style and panache. You get more of a sense of movement, of excitement, of epicness. I'd compare it to the difference between games like World of Warcraft and other massively multiplayer games. Never underestimate the value of style.

The screenshots and the video currently running on the `pirates-game`.com shows a hint of this style. We'll have a developer diary sometime in the upcoming months from the artists who will talk about the advantages of their art direction.

From reading the forums, I'm sure there are people that will never be convinced. So if you can't take my word for it, then uhhhh... you'll just have to buy the game and see? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> But we will have a few more videos that will showcase the pace of the game. (And no, I don't expect that I can enginer any special discounts for you guys here, but you'll definitely be getting a few sneak peeks at new material before it comes out.)

Best,
Jeff Foley

Cheers Jeff, i think that answers sampows request <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Yeah along with a few others im starting to like the graphic nature of it aswell, in the long run may all be for the best as we dont want to take ourselves to seriously <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />
