This is the discussion thread for any rumours and thoughts on the possibility of a Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Let's start with the following article:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><i><b>Scoop: Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 Details</b></i><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

Some franchises just don’t know when to quit. Whether or not people are getting sick and tired of the whole Pirates of the Caribbean thing, when a franchise makes that much money, it’s hard to let it die. We’ve been hearing rumblings about a possible fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie for months now, but tonight I got an email from the old friend of the site which not only confirmed a fourth movie will almost certainly be happening, but dropped details on where the series may end up going when it continues.

Our source says that Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is no longer just a possibility, it’s almost a certainty. More importantly, Johnny Depp is all but assured to return, though our scooper claims he may end up making as much as $35 - $40 million to do it. Also returning will be Geoffrey Rush and Gore Verbinski as director, but forget about the rest of the cast because from now on the movies will only be about Captain Jack.

That’s right, Pirates 4 will cast aside Will and Elizabeth to make it an all Jack Sparrow movie. That won’t be the only change Disney is planning to make when the series continues though. Our scooper says, “the ending of Pirates 3, the fountain of youth story might not be the only story they might used the next pirate’s film. The fountain story could used in another form to introduce the story for Pirates 4… the next film might be a departure from the same formula of the last three movies as well, meaning that Jerry Bruckheimer could be planning to enter the realm of Science Fiction this time around and it could be the heart of a new trilogy with Jack Sparrow and his crew of misfits. Some of the brainstorming going around involves some Jules Verne type of scenarios involving some pretty big flying machines, a man who wants to rule more than just the ocean, a encounter with the most famous and dangerous pirate of all, a race to get to a lost world (Hint, Hint) and Jack and his crew going to where no pirate has gone before (No, its not space but Disney had made animated movie about this place before with Michel J Fox voicing one of the characters).”

Pirates science fiction? What the heck? The Michael J. Fox movie our source is referring to is almost certainly Atlantis, which would tie in the Jules Verne and science fiction elements mentioned. Apparently we’ll also get more of Jack’s past and his family, which could also mean more Keith Richards. I’d actually be ok with that, Keith was surprisingly good.

Don’t get too attached to the idea of another Pirates of the Caribbean sequel though. Our insider thinks that Disney plans to take a long, long breather between Pirates movies: “word is that the start date could be around 2009 to 2011.” I don’t think we need another Pirates sequel, but if they’re going to do one, giving the franchise time to recharge is probably a very good idea.

As always, consider everything above as nothing but rumor till something more develops. Our source is a proven one, but if we can’t give you our source, then consider anything we tell you as unconfirmed gossip.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--><b><i>From: <a href="http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Scoop-Pirates-Of-The-Caribbean-4-Details-5506.html" target="_blank">http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Scoop-Pirat...tails-5506.html</a></i></b>

I am all for another Pirates of the Caribbean film. If done well, that is. Unfortunately the rumours from above article suggest that they are actually TRYING to make a BAD film. With so much piratey stories left unexplored, they want to sent Jack Sparrow to Atlantis with sci-fi flying machines? That truly does sound like a thoroughly bad idea. I have a bunch of ideas on what WOULD make a good sequel though:

The one thing they need to do is to DROP the dramatic tendencies of the second and third films and revert back to the fun of the original. They want to go into a new direction and I think that would be "new direction" enough. There's enough drama in other films, including PotC 2 and 3. We don't need another drama in part 4. Will and Elizabeth aren't really needed for part 4 either. Their story has come to a conclusion.

What we do need is Jack and Barbossa doing a speck of honest pirating on the high seas. With both of them fighting over the Black Pearl and trying to acchieve immortality, but never managing to remain immortal captain of the Pearl for a long time. Also there need to be lots of scenes with Jack and Barbossa debating who is the better captain and who gets the Pearl. This in the vein of the "Competing Captains" scene from AWE. That was one of the highlights of film 3, but unfortunately there were not enough similar scenes in the final film, even though these WERE scripted and even filmed.

We also need the massive fleet-to-fleet battle that was denied us at the end of AWE. However, what they do NOT need to do is make the sequal "Bigger, better and darker" than the first, second and third films. I am all for making the sequel just as good as the first film, but perhaps a bit lighter in tone.

Well spoken, Pieter, I couldn't agree more. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> Unfortunately that's what happens to fun, loose, free spirited films once they start making sequels, they take themselves too seriously. And I've said this before in another post but it was a big mistake to make the 2nd and 3rd films back to back. By doing that they were in no position to get any feedback on the second film and perhaps know if they should go in another direction, which would have been going back to what worked in the first.

About Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, I've heard that they don't want to do another film anyway. But Johnny Depp has stated that he would be open to it because he likes the character so much. I'm sure the 35-40 million paycheck isn't to much of a burden either. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

BTW, I haven't gotten the chance to see the third movie yet so I can't comment on it. I know it got a lukewarm review but I'll check it out anyway either in the theater or on DVD. There is something about these films, even if their done wrong, that does draw an audience. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Oh dear, noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

The first part was fine, though I didn't like fantasy elements presented there.

The second was a disaster, especially the parts with that wreckage (I mean Flying Dutchman) in the role of super-powerful submarine ship, with 'maxim'-chaser guns on the bow.

After seeing the second part I didn't manage to force myself to watch third one.

Now, I read text which Pieter had published here... Not whole, I went only to the part where its said that Disney want to make a Caribbean-pirate-science-fiction film, and I really can't imagine what kind of flop it'll become. I can surely agree that Mickey Mouse doesn't know when to leave the table. However, some actors, some directors and people working in show-business will be more than happy - for such money J. Depp will happily take the role of clown.

I can certainly understand that viewpoint. I do believe however that if they return more to the style of the first movie then it will be a success.

No way could I stomach a movie like the one that they are talking about in that post!

Why not make it a sci-fi flying machine jack sparrow goes to mars to fight godzilla and then play a game of old maid with the under-sheriff of atlantis after finding the fountain of youth in phoenix arizona movie. It would be just as big of a pile of crap as what they are proposing!

they're just overdoing themselves too much. it's getting wierder and wierder all the time, but less fun!

I think that this is not an official press release. Ted and Terry are too professional as writers, to make such a bad story.

Exactly right. Less fun. They got to serious with it.

Exactly my opinion as well. Too serious, too dramatic. And they try to compensate that by going weirder. But that doesn't stop it from being too serious and too dramatic. It is of course not helped by Hans Zimmer's music that is truly overdramatical in places, most notably the ending of PotC 2 with the low male choir when Jack is eaten by the Kraken. For PotC 4 they should keep two things in clear view: Pirates and fun. Drop the seriousness, drop the drama, return to the fun and the pirates. And a bit weird is OK, but I think less weird for PotC 4 wouldn't be a bad thing.

BTW: The article I posted is just a rumour, of course. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

This is just one of a number of rumours floating around. There's no script, no one signed; just a couple of ideas floating around. Certainly no firm plans. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

i'm not at all sure, but i think i've come across a 4th pirates movie soundtrack. it's only a short one, and not really a song but more of an audio-file, but i have it nonetheless. the thing is, i can't recognise it from the other three movies, so it has to be from the 4th.

Well, I'm in agreement again with your whole post, Pieter. Those are my sentiments exactly. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> Even though its just a rumor I do think there will be a fourth one, it sounds like most of those actors would like to do it. And I do think that they will try to emulate the first one again. Most critics also seem to share the point of view that they forgot that what made the first one so good was that it didn't take itself seriously.
And I would think that they would want to score another winner with Jack Sparrow. Its a franchise that can easily be resurrected, and I would think that most fans would like to see these characters again in a movie that's done right so they would be willing to give it another shot. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2up" border="0" alt="thumbs1.gif" />

Music from PotC 4? That must be a fake. The making of that movie is not even started. There is no music for it; I can assure you. Must be from some other film. Wouldn't be the first time music from other films was advertized as unexisting music.

no, it's real. i'm sure of that. maybe it's from the first movie. it's called 'a ghostly appearance'. which reminds me: i've also stumbled upon the soundtrack played when you see tortuga from the air in the first film.

wow! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />

I really doubt that disney's accountants would allow funding for such a ridiculous idea. That will never return enough profit. Who will want to watch that?

I would've thought there was more mileage in making a Prequel. Considering the interest in Sparrow and his previous exploits hinted at during the three films to date, there would easily be a film in there and handily without the big lack of the likes of Will Turner and the Swanns etc. As it is the series we have only ever seen Captain Jack down on his luck, his star rather waning. Would audiences not welcome seeing Sparrow at his best sacking Nassau without firing a shot?

I would personally welcome that very much. As long as they keep Johnny Depp playing Jack Sparrow. There's no use in casting a new young guy to play the younger Sparrow.
