I know the Batavia is still in, (hopefully). I have had my hands tied lately, I have been running around doing this and that. So, we do have a collection of ideas we need to sift through and try to combine them in the best possible way. Here is a rough outline I think we were about to agree on:

-Wench pulls up at the coast.

-Failed George Washington Moment.

-In the jungle, Jack gets scared.

-Arrival at villiage. Children playing on and near water wheel, foreshadow to DMC.

-Jack goes to the Shaman (Dalma).

-Children dance around Mercer, the monster throwing flowers at his feet.

-Jack and Dalma hear screaming.

-Mercer busts into the hut saying she will be coming along.

-Jack askes Mercer what's going on.

-Mercer says they are the cargo.

-Villiage burns, and the populace is brought off in chains, Mercer has a slight smirk on his face, watching the children be taken.

And thats what I see so far, before we had the new ideas. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

So whats wrong with it?

Jack and Tia are talking.
The army won't start with enslaving right away, it will start in couple of minutes. Just the time we need to Jack and Tia have a small conversation.

It would increase <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> value, that's for sure. I like it. I don't think we ever agreed on exactly what would happen. So they meet the villagers, Jack goes in and starts talking with Tia in her hut. The last we saw of Mercer those innocent little kids were throwing flowers at the monster while dancing around him. Then after Jack and Tia emerge, we see the villagers in chains, the kids still holding some of the flowers they were tossing at Mercer. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> (I think that would be a great touch. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />)
Now, did the soldiers accompany them through the forest (which would mean that they were with them during the jungle scene) or did Mercer have them follow behind, say, they left the boat a few minutes after Jack, Mercer and company and tracked them to the village?

We'll if the soldiers were in the boats... I guess they had to come along.
I think that we had Jack asking why are soldiers coming along too, and Mercer answering that thye are there just in case.

Something like that

Yeah, that sounds good. Oh, and the kids have to be frowning, maybe a little one can look up at Mercer and hold out a flower to him still while he/she is still in chains and then they start moving and the flower drops and gets trampled by soldiers. That will have to make everyone just HATE Mercer and the EITC.

And, no it does not go from the flowers to that, that was a vague o' so vague outline. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Jeez, Mercer, I thought that the kid still holding a flower would have been enough to cement that monster's reputation. You just made him one of the worst villains in cinematic history. Yep, I didn't remember if we had filled that scene in or not. What do we have as the rationale for the soldiers coming with them to the village. That something might happen on the way there, as gunsmith suggested? Would it be better to have Mercer arrange for them to show up later, or should they come with Jack, Mercer and Edwards? Remember, Jack and Mercer are supposedly coming to establish relations with the village. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Than... on our GW moment we would have just one boat coming on shore right?

Maybe it would be better if the soldier come up latter... and Jack and Edwards, (together with the audience) would be like "where did they come from?" & "what are they doing here?".

<!--quoteo(post=271696:date=Aug 3 2008, 09:10 AM:name=gunsmith)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (gunsmith @ Aug 3 2008, 09:10 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=271696"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Than... on our GW moment we would have just one boat coming on shore right?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I guess it would. And that can explain Mercer's behavior on the beach to Jack's bumbling. He wants to get the hell out of there as soon as possible because he knows the soldiers will be showing up soon enough and doesn't want to have to deal with Jack asking questions about it.

<!--quoteo(post=271696:date=Aug 3 2008, 09:10 AM:name=gunsmith)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (gunsmith @ Aug 3 2008, 09:10 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=271696"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Maybe it would be better if the soldier come up latter... and Jack and Edwards, (together with the audience) would be like "where did they come from?" & "what are they doing here?".<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
It would give more <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> value. If Jack, Edwards and the rest of us had no idea that the soldiers were there and suddenly when he comes out of the hut with Tia everyone is in chains and a dumbfounded Jack could sort of confront Mercer and demand to know what's going on. Mercer can dismissively explain that he had the soldiers follow behind them so that the village could be taken off guard and when Jack protests he can pointedly inform him that this is the real mission whether he likes it or not.
It could be at this point then that Mercer <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" /> turns to order the troops to start the prisoners moving and the little girl looks up at Mercer with bewilderment and tries to hand him a flower but he walks on by her <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" /> and the girl gets yanked along with the rest as the flower falls and is crushed underfoot by a soldier. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ko" border="0" alt="ko.gif" />

I think that's just GREAT!!!!

First we get stuned with Tia in the village. Everyone is like "Oh It's her!" and than "What are the soldiers doing?"
I like that.

That sounds interesting. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

@ Old Salt: Worse still. A couple of pages back, I suggested to have the capture take place while Jack and Edwards sail to port. Or even that the capture takes places after the assault on the port. Check a few pages back. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
Of course this is a rather different idea altogether opposed to the one you're discussing now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Sorry Pieter. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> I seemed to have missed that.

I just think people didnt hate Mercer enough in DMC and AWE.

I always thought there would be a small contingent of soldiers that would come along just to be security against animals.

Oh, and sorry about this, since we have, for a while, been referring to the George Washington scene as the failed George Washington moment, I have forgotten what happens. lol. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Could someone please describe it again. Thanks. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And here is my first try at the scene in the jungle. It is very tentative. I expect it to be changed much, and I only made it to a little bit into the scene inside Tia's hut, I got a little block after that. :/

EXT. IVORY COAST JUNGLE - DAY

MERCER, NATHANIEL, JACK, AND A DETACHMENT OF SAILORS AND
MARINES CUT THROUGH THE FOREST.

JACK
(SLIGHTLY WORRIED)
So, there arent any of those cat
types around here? The big,
massive, striped ones, eh?

MERCER
(SARCASTICALLY)
Mr. Sparrow, if any tiger wants to
make his way and attack this
contingent, he will have to deal
with me, and a wall of lead.

JACK
I think he wouldn't stay around
too long with the first option
against him.

A ROAR IS HEARD NEARBY. MERCER AND EVERYONE PULLS THEIR
WEAPONS AND PREPARES TO FIGHT. MERCER LOOKS INTO THE WOODS
THEN TOWARDS JACK, LOOKS SLIGHTLY AWAY THEN LOOKS AT JACK
AGAIN WHO IS MISSING. HE APPEARS AT THE END OF THE LINE
HIDING BEHIND A MARINE.

JACK
Sorry there chap, I was just
protecting our rear.

MERCER ROLLS HIS EYES. THE GROUP MAKES IT TO THE VILLAGE.
MERCER STOPS AND ALLOWS THE GROUP TO GO FORWARD, HE GLANCES
BEHIND AND YOU SEE SEVERAL PIECES OF FOLIAGE SHAKE. HE LOOKS
FORWARD AND CONTINUES.

EXT. IVORY COAST VILLAGE - DAY

NATHANIEL
Mr. Sparrow, we will make our way
to the village leader, Mercer and
the marines will begin to set up
camp.

JACK
Right ho!

JACK WALKS THROUGH THE VILLAGE, MERCER AND NATHANIEL FOLLOW
BEHIND TO FIND A FREE SPACE TO SET UP TENTS. CHILDREN THROW
FLOWERS AROUND MERCER AT HIS FEET. HE CAREFULLY WATCHES EACH

22.

CHILD. AS JACK AND NATHANIEL CONTINUE ON, THERE ARE SEVERAL
MORE CHILDREN PLAYING ON A WATER WHEEL. (EMPHASIS ON THIS).
THEY MAKE IT TO THE VILLAGE LEADER'S HUT.

INT. VILLAGE LEADER'S HUT - DAY

THE ROOM IS FILLED WITH SMOKE AND ODDITIES. JARS, BELLS, AND
OTHER THINGS. JACK AND NATHANIEL ENTER AND SEE THE LEADER IS
A WOMAN.

TIA DALMA
(SMILING)
Ah, Jack Sparrow and Nathaniel
Edwards. I am Tia Dalma, the
shaman of this village, and I have
foreseen your coming.

JACK
(CAREFULLY
MANEUVERS AROUND
A HANGING JAR
WITH A FINGER IN
IT, EYEING IT
SURPRISEDLY)
Tia Dalma, a pleasure.

TIA DALMA
So, you come to make camp here for
the night?

NATHANIEL
That and for some supplies.

TIA DALMA
Those you may have. But, I need
something in return.

NATHANIEL
We have brought some items that
may be to your liking.

JACK
Yes, of course. We will come to
that later. So, what is it you do?

TIA DALMA
(LAUGHS)
I said I am a shaman, I foretell
things. Jack Sparrow, you have a
destiny about you.

23.

JACK
Do I now? A destiny...What might
this be?

TIA DALMA
(QUICKLY)
I still havent received payment
for the first.

JACK
(SMILING)
My apologies.

TIA DALMA
Although, I would like to know
more about you, Jack.

FADE OUT.

The orders could be that Mercer needs to establish trade between the village and the nearby port because that would then open up the somewhat hostile port to English shipping. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Ooohhh... another idea suddenly popped up. How about the idea that the EITC wants to capture the town and needs the villagers' help in doing so? If Mercer gets the villagers to join, they can attack from the land-side. Jack being friendly with the French (for the time being) can anchor in the port and attack from the sea-side. This would explain why Mercer needs to be friendly with the villagers when they first get there. Also, during the attack on the town, many of the villagers would die, meaning that it'd be easier to round up the villagers and put them in chains right after. Imagine a heroic assault by a joint venture between Jack, the EITC and the villagers to conquer the evil French town, which they win and just when they've won, Mercer and the EITC marines turn on the villagers and put them in chains. Jack, of course, is horrified.

This might also explain the French pirate further. When Jack and Mercer leave again, the French pirate tails them in anger at their attack. However, he already knows of Jack's unhappiness, so he knows he might be able to cause him to mutiny against Mercer and the EITC.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Is this the post you were referring to, Pieter?

I thought that we might have come up with an idea for this but couldn't remember precisely. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

So now we have a few versions of the soldiers attack on the village. Maybe we can use elements of both.

Indeed. But we have to decide now whether we want just some soldiers to accompany them or whether Mercer has all of them follow without Jack's knowledge.

Jack's GW moment was when they were coming ashore on the boat and Jack was standing in the front with his hands on his hips (like that image you have of George Washington at the head of the boat while they are crossing the Deleware like in these two images...)

<img src="http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x172/oldsalt_bucket/george_washington_crossing_delaware.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x172/oldsalt_bucket/GWmoment.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

but Jack, unlike George, stumbles coming out of the boat. However, we aren't certain about the bumble anymore since we have, in the same scene, Jack holding the map upside down while proclaiming that he knows where to go.

<!--quoteo(post=271801:date=Aug 3 2008, 10:35 PM:name=Mercer)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Mercer @ Aug 3 2008, 10:35 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=271801"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->And here is my first try at the scene in the jungle. EITC needs villagers help to capture the port??? >>>don't think so.

Now, EITC have guns and cannons and all. Why would they need villagers help with bows and spears?

Perhaps for a diversion. Point is we have a few storylines here for the village scene. I really like that one we came up with recently and we are not dragging the port into a fight as the soldiers quickly take the village on their own. It makes sense that Beckett would have planned it that way and you can see Mercer informing Jack that this had been the real mission all along.

The other scenario allowed for the French pirate to much more easily come into the story so we would have to come up with a new plotline for his entry.

And we would need a new reason for why they have to find the village in the first place. In the other version we had it was to ask their help in taking the port. Could we still use that if we go with the new plotline? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

<!--quoteo(post=271848:date=Aug 4 2008, 11:27 AM:name=gunsmith)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (gunsmith @ Aug 4 2008, 11:27 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=271848"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I wrote this Village scene couple of times but....damn its lost somewhere in these pages. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I know. That's the problem as the pages mount up in this thread and we take breaks of a few weeks or more in between our posts. Much is forgotten and lost in the pages of the thread. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Yeah, summer is always busy. Vacations and things.

Well, I still think we need a more solid reason why Beckett would need to send two captains, his right hand man, and several detachments of marines to capture a few dozen prisoners. Maybe we thought of this, but for the reasons you stated Old Salt I might have forgotten it. :p

<!--quoteo(post=272019:date=Aug 5 2008, 11:00 AM:name=Mercer)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Mercer @ Aug 5 2008, 11:00 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=272019"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><b>Well, I still think we need a more solid reason why Beckett would need to send two captains, his right hand man, and several detachments of marines to capture a few dozen prisoners.</b> Maybe we thought of this, but for the reasons you stated Old Salt I might have forgotten it. :p<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Well, we tried several different scenarios, but we do need to come up with a good answer to your question, Mercer. His right hand man (Mercer) is obvious, Beckett wants the job done right. Maybe he wants to give Edwards on the job training. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> And he wants to rid himself of Jack Sparrow, who is an expensive headache. Unfortunately for Beckett, Jack is the only one of the three who knows the precise location of Turtle Rock. So Beckett figures he can use him to get the other two there, then dispose of Jack afterwards. However, before Mercer can carry out <i>those</i> orders, Jack winds up getting rid of him first.

Why does Beckett send those soldiers? Well, capturing a village both for slaves and Tia isn't going to be easy, so he wants some of his finest soldiers to do the job. I think the big question that still needs answering is what was the reason Jack was given for helping them get to the village? In Pieter's version, we had an explanation that Mercer needed to enlist the help of the village to take over the French port.
But in this most recent scenario, we are back to square one. We have what will happen in the village, Mercer grabbing the villagers while Jack and Edwards are talking to Tia and we have a water wheel scene and a flower scene with that, but we don't have the overall reason for them being there in the first place.
What did Beckett tell Jack was the reason they were going so Jack would take them there? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Of course, Tia is the reason, but Jack certainly wouldn't lead them right to her if there intention was to take her and the village into slavery. What I mean is what is the reason that Beckett gave <i>Jack</i> to get him to lead them to Turtle Rock and the village?

I like that scene you wrote, Mercer! Indeed it isn't finished, but it's certainly a good start. And the jungle joke made me laugh; good one. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />
One thing I don't like much is that Tia Dalma seems to repeat what she said to Will Turner in DMC. It'd be nice to have her say something else. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

That was indeed what I was referring to, Old Salt. Our friends arrive at the village and have a talk. Mercer stays there to set up a "trade". In reality Mercer tries to convince the villagers to help them in an attack of the nearby French town. Jack doesn't know this, but Edwards does. Jack and Edwards sail into the French town (they can safely enter, because Jack has been doing some off-the-chart trade there*) and Edwards tells Jack of the real plan. Then there's an attack on the French town and after the attack, the EITC marines capture the villagers. Edwards then knows that he was never given the whole truth either.

I think the soldiers can just be part on the contigent that sets out towards the village. Otherwise we couldn't have Mercer's "I was just protecting our rear" joke. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" />
Also if we go by my suggestion above, we don't need dozens of EITC marines to go to the village anyway.

The EITC doesn't need the villagers, but they claim they do. The first reason is because the villagers actually don't like the French town, so doing this would likely get the trust of the villagers. So basically it's an excuse for coming there. Secondly, it's much easier to capture Tia when half the other villagers died in the attack. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />
Also, like Old Salt says, this would also give the French captain a reason to enter the story and not have it be just a random encounter.

As for the GW moment, I think Jack should <i>succeed</i> on that one. And then mess up with the map thing. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

As Old Salt says, Mercer should join on the trip to make sure it goes right. Jack should be on the trip, because he can safely go into the French port so that the port can be attached from sea and land at the same time. Also Beckett wants to take the opportunity of this endeavour to get rid of Jack. Edwards should be on the trip because he's a competent officer who can take over from Jack when necessary. Mercer cannot do that.

However, Beckett tells Jack that they just want to establish a trade and during the voyage Jack gets more and more suspicious because of Mercer's and Edwards' presence and the EITC soldiers. Beckett tells Edwards that the voyage is intended to take command of the French port. The REAL reason is to capture Tia.

Makes sense? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
